So....does this mean we can stop "changing the world!!" now? We're done with that right? I can play in peace? Does this mean I can finally start an indefinite SSP world and not have to pout when I get wind of "WORLD ALTERING CHANGES!" like water levels changing and my rooms ending up as a bathhouses, or biome additions putting jungle trees smack dab on mah wall.

Only problem I can see is that he's doing it on the pre-release of 1.6.1
Chances are they're set up differently in this actual release.
Others have said to set it up in the same fashion but I'm still getting the same issue.
I can see the "custom resource pack" as an option when I load up the game, but the textures I've changed don't actually change in-game. It may be that the game is still reading the 1.6.1 file in the Versions folder

I'm running 1.6 and on a server right now that hasn't updated from 1.5.2

Raid villages and run back to our castle as the enemy kingdom ran us down. There were even RP elements involved. I miss those kind of server but they never seem to stick around long.
Would be awesome to join something like that again and I'm hoping a recent server I'm with will keep working on what we started.

I felt like this for a while after "The End" was introduced but quickly got over it after I realized I was still playing the same game all along.
A lil change can be confusing and unsettling for some. Give it some time and figure things out before you just throw your hands up in frustration.
Though I gotta say the new launcher is as ugly as I expected, I mean, atleast replace that ugly default windows' grey with some dirt pattern or something haha
