posted a message on If this continues, Manic Digger may be the better game.
    Quote from Leandro »
This topic is too epic, so epic that every last one of you needs to read it from the beginning all over again to even grasp the concept.

@wookie Does anyone really care about WHO made WHAT and with WHICH level of creativity?

All I care about is having a game that is half decent to play and not a boring trek into empty space. I would FULLY support a "clone" that is better than the original.

Without the release of Infiniminer, Minecraft wouldn't exist, so your argument is moot either way.

I have a standing policy not to feed trolls, but you say your not and you want an honest debate from both your posts alright lets 'try' it.

Standing Point 1 (by you) Notch should make the game Open Source (like Manic Digger is supposed to be) to make development faster and free (so he won't be greedy as you said). Okay lets look at a clear example of a free, fairly open source very popular game. Dwarf Fortress, pretty much done by one programmer, totaly free, open source for modfication/changes. He runs on pure donations. To get to it's current state (witch could be considered alpha) took about 8 years (no joke look it up: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html)

Possible counter-point: Not fully open-source, only one person doing it etc. Alright vaild point, lets look at another open soruce project, one comes to mine, and it had a head start with an already finshed game, Freespace 2 Open Source Project. It's primary goals have been to continue to improve and add to Freespace 2, FS2 went open soruce in about 2002 in final act by the orignal developers (Volition). Again it has taken 8 years for the team to get FS2Open to it's point now (including pixel shaders, shadows and all that good graphic stuff we come to expect from a lot of games) and thats with a team and a founcation of a game already in place. Still not conviced, still make your counter-point, vaild lets look another example, this one made open source from the ground up.

TASpring engine (Spring better know as) witch was started privatley then released and has gone through a lot of changes over the years, I couldn't find a definite start date but the engine went open source before supreme commander was announced, (Around 2002-2004) For the sake of argument we will say 6 years latter, and still this open source many people working on it project is comsiderd in an alpha state. (just look at the version number) and there are many contributers to the project.

So to re-itterate my first point, open-source takes a lot more time as it's dependent more on the stability of the community around it and the indviduals who particpate in it. Notch has released an alpha version of a game in just about a year, pretty much single handly, his motivation, isn't greed though needing to pay the bills i'm sure pushed him a bit farther at some point. But passion and dedication to this project, remeber Notch was a sucessfull Game Developer/Programmer before giving up that position to work on an independent project (witch happend to be minecraft). This blows your 'greed' statement out of the water, he can make much more stable money working/developing games from other companies. And then you ask why is he charging, he still has to pay his bills after all, and he wants to develop a company so not all the preasure is on him (as is being well displayed right now).

It's common bussniess sense, i'm sure many publishers around the world are horrifed, not that minecraft is doing so well from an independent developer, but by his price tag's for the game. Even at the full 20 euro price, minecraft is a real bargin. As early buyers were basicly Notch's investors in the project, so thats why he does take the time to listen to us, and read what he can, anything constructive. I will say this, for an alpha it's the most stable alpha I have ever had a chance to play, I know more game developers alpha witch are far more buggy and far less features then minecraft. Since I started playing I have never had a crash, thats damn impressive for an alpha.

Moving on, Standing Point 2: Manic Digger may be better game and used as backing for open source, you use DOTA as your example of this. First this logic is flawed in that DOTA is not open source, it's not even a program, it's a mod. There is a HUGE diffrence bewteen a mod and open source. A mod is simple, it's a modifcation that adds to or changes how a game play or feels. Open source is the acutal executable, and other files code open to change and modifcation by anyone under some restrictive uses (such as no charging for the project, or credit etc.) Thats a big diffrence and is no a revelant example for your point. Manic Digger is in essance a clone, nothing new about that, it's a pretty straight foward clone, and there proceeding because notch lets them. Will it be better then minecraft, who knows depends on the people who work on it. But will it be done before minecraft, doubtfull. Open soruce project by there very nature are never really considered 'finshed' because theres always something or someone changing the code in some way.

As for dedication and lack of updates of minecraft as of late, it's been beaten down in the forums and many others (as people say fanboys, i think a majority of us are more critical fans from what I have seen) Notch is doing the smartest thing he can, with his capital increase from sales, not only does he have enough to make a living, he's not just siting around playing (though hey he still loves games as much as us and needs some time to play right?!) all day long, hes taking that captial to form a proper fully legal development company to hire people from the minecraft community (in the sweeden area) to help him develop the game. This takes time of course, a lot from the ground up, paperwork, legal issues, banks, applications, interviews, offices, equipment, etc. etc. Takes a lot of time and money, Notch has the money, so hes spending his time on it, trying to work on the game whenever he can as well. Why? Because he dosn't want us left with nothing, and he probley has his own ideas and timelines for getting things done.

The point is this, once the compnay is establish and the first few staff comes in (we already have one on the web-side now) things will go smoother, and take off a lot of preasure from Notch so he can focus on the big thing, developing the game, and now he dosn't have to worry about his own down times or burning out. Theres also more eyes and ears to look out here into the community from his 'investors' to see what we all think, what we want, and what we don't like. More will get done, a lot more, and they will have the same motiviation notch did this past year, why, becuase they love what there doing, they love the game there working on, and most importantly there getting paid for there work. Everyone has to make a living, and when you can acutally work on somehting you love doing and get paid for it, well its a win-win for everyone.

Does this mean Minecraft will be done in the next year, doubtfull, most games now a days even smaller published games with a full team can take anywhere from a year an a half to four to five years to complete. I'm thankfull were getting in on the ground floor, and having the input and impact we can have. In my opinion I think its a better use of our time and notch's if we acutally post constructive ideas thoughts and changes, instead of complaining about lack of updates and that he should make the game open source because hes greedy. Hes trying to fufill any game developers/programmers dream. Making the game they want there way independtly, and have a blast doing it. Does this mean we shouldn't be critcial, course not, lets keep him enthused and on track, but theres no reason to add more uneeded stress, the worst thing that can happen (that does happen to many mods and open source projects) is added pressaure, this leads to horrible things, such as burn out, gaps in releases and even worse stoping of the game being developed.

Thats my thoughts and points on this 'debate' hope you enjoyed it, sorry it was so long, and hello to everyone in the community!
