After digging out a vein of ore, I always place a torch in the hole to make sure nothing can spawn in it. That's the only precaution I take worth mentioning.
I had this when I first started playing. Monsters scared the crap out of me. I suggest cave-exploring on peaceful for a while, until you get comfortable running into dark places. It can take a while. Once you're ready to play normally, turn the difficulty back up to your standard and jump in.
One of the biggest things to keep in mind, is that the slower you move the more monsters you have to deal with. You don't want to give those little bastards time to spawn, right? So hastily torch up as much as the cave as you can, with your bow/sword ready. I'm not saying plow through it like a bowling ball, but you do not want to creep around at a slow pace. Always place torches ahead of yourself and look forward to finding lots of ores. Keep your mind on the prize!
I hope the forum doesn't try to tear you apart for doing an LP. I like the spawn, it is pretty amazing. Grats, it takes me several tries before I settle on a world.
Try deleting your Minecraft files (apart from your world saves) and then redownloading? I haven't played with track since before they were messed up so I can't confirm whether or not I have the issue.
I like what you did with the door at the beginning of the video! That's about it. You certainly get points for just making the video. Have you checked out Etho's thread showing off his inventions? He has a vertical drop storage system that I like very much.
Generate a world and walk around for one minute and decide whether or not to keep it. If you don't want it, quit and delete, then generate a new world and repeat the process. When you finally settle on a new world (and you better be playing on at least normal difficulty), survive your first night and start building a home. Think of a mega project to work on, with some side projects on the side to mix things up a bit.
If you feel like you're going to delete the world or going to generate a new one, then just don't play at all until you're willing to go back to that same world.
If all else fails, ask yourself: What would Sean Connery would do?
Solve the issues involving black screens. I can't play on Far render for more than like 10-20 minutes without the game crashing. Fortunately I can play Normal fine. I miss playing on Far so much. =[
Pretty neat, thanks to your video I've figured out how to drag dropped items over wooden pressure plates using the flow of water. It's nice to know that turns are also possible! You should edit the first post to include the second video. =]
Edit: I must not have been paying attention, because apparently you did. My bad!
They'll disappear after 5 minutes if left uncollected. It's possible your mob tower trap is inefficient or that the items are getting destroying/stuck along the way. I suggest throwing some items into the beginning of the whole system and following them to the collection point.

Throw all of your items on the ground, and then go die. They will still be there in the Nether when you go back! Probably.
