Okay, if a mod decides it belongs in another section, I'm sure they'll move it. Noted for future reference though, thanks :)

posted a message on XP Grinder (using multiple mob spawners)
NOTE: Although some of the stuff in this post might be useful, if you don't have the ability to place mob spawners, on your server or in single player, then this post isn't for you. Seriously, what are you doing here? If you want a legit XP Grinder that you can build (with some effort), go , or (and start saving up that redstone!), or view one of many tutorials on the internet. Otherwise, continue reading.

Download the single player map HERE
    XP Grinder is located near x 0, y 0.

So, I'm making this post on the forums here, because I don't really have the ability to make one of those neat YouTube tutorial videos. This is an xp grinder design I came up with, using multiple mob spawners to get xp. Apparently, people want to know how I built it, so instead of helping every person build it for theirselves, I'd rather just point at this map and say "look at that" :) . So yeah, up at the top of this post is a link to a single player/creative mode map in which I built the xp grinder. Note that it doesn't actually have mob spawners placed in it though, as I don't have the tools to place them in single player (I've put pumpkins where the mob spawners would be). Don't worry though, it works. I've rebuilt this xp grinder five or six times over the last few months in SMP, and it's worked every time. Though, with the xp changes in the next patch (1.3), this thing probably won't even be necessary anymore. Oh well! 1 to 30 in a couple of minutes? Yes please! :D

So, let's get into how this thing works...

The main concept of this design is using gravity to quickly move the mobs away from the spawners, so they don't interfere with the spawn rate. Actually, before I started on this design, I was using a previous XP grinder design (like the one , only with 8 of these chambers stacked on top of each other). Now, I'm not bashing his design, just saying that there are a few drawbacks to using that one with multiple spawners. For one, the mob elevator is only one block wide, so mobs will tend to get "bunched up" in front of the elevator, and preventing more from passing through. That limits the the number of spawners you can have attached to the grinder, and THAT limits the overall speed of the grinder. Also, when the mobs spawn in the "chamber", they spawn in the air. Some may spawn up to 3-4 blocks up, so they take some slight damage before reaching the end of the grinder, resulting in more "dead loss" (dying on impact at the end of the grinder = no xp!).

There are two main things that make this grinder design *slightly* different: when the mobs spawn in the air, a layer of water near the bottom of the spawn chamber (held up by signs) breaks their fall, ensuring that they don't take damage from the initial fall (which lets you stack the mob spawners, and also makes sure that there is almost no dead loss at the end of the grinder), AND there is a nine block wide mob elevator, which greatly increases the number of mobs that can move through the grinder at a time. The design I've put in this single player map (linked above) can hold up to 50 mob spawners, putting the time to level to 50 at somewhere between 5 to 10 minutes. Though, if you REALLY wanted to, you could expand the chamber size and increase that to as many spawners as you want. Though, I've found that after 40-50 spawners, the grinder gets congested and the mobs will start clogging it up. Usually about 20-30 spawners is enough (depending on server lag/number of people online).

NOW, IMPORTANT NOTE! There are two things I've built into this xp grinder: a lighting system in the spawn chambers, and a "mob disposal chute" at the end of the grinder, both attached to separate levers. These are VERY IMPORTANT! With this many spawners, you MUST have a way to turn this grinder OFF when you're not using it. Just standing near it will start the spawners. With the maximum number of spawners, it will start pumping out a HUGE number of mobs, enough to severely impact framerate/game performance for people nearby, and may even crash the server! So if you're going to design your own grinder using the concepts in this post, MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A WAY TO TURN OFF THE SPAWNERS AND/OR DISPOSE OF MOBS ALREADY MOVING THROUGH THE GRINDER! I repeat: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN "ON/OFF" BUTTON!

Screenshots! (these were taken using a test build I made on a private server)

A view from the top funnel area, with a ton of zombies.

    ... and without zombies.

Inside the spawn chamber (this one only used 26 spawners total/13 per side).

The "killing area" where the zombies drop is directly ahead. Just below that and out of sight is the incinerator/zombie disposal.

Anyway, post a reply if you have any questions/comments. Thanks for reading, and I hope this thing works for you!

Also, I really really hope this is in the correct forum. If it isn't, could a mod move it for me? Pretty please? :)

    Hey, great idea :biggrin.gif:

So hey, if you're looking for a seed with lots of snow near the spawn: "IceIceBaby", or -1081848554 (weird coincidence, I know!)

I mapped it out, red circles are NPC villages.

So then I tried to map all that snow to the west..

Gaaaw.. it might keep going, I don't know! If you're looking for a seed that has lots of snow... well, there you go.

On the server I'm currently playing on (the name of the server is "Aurora"), I decided to make a giant tree. After a few weeks of work, I managed to finish it, here is the result. Note that this was all done without the use of mods (it's a "vanilla" server, after all :smile.gif: ). No flying, no /jumpto.

This shot was taken during construction. You can see how I went about making the top of the tree: rings of dirt, followed by torches, saplings, and lots of bonemeal (I'm impatient).

The sand towers I constructed nearby.

A few shots of the entrance.

    First floor/entrance.

    Looking up...

The ladder on the top floor (there's more than one floor, it's just that they all look the same - BOORING - so I didn't take screenshots of those)

A few more shots of the interior...

Looking down at the nearby town of Aiur, the top of the tree, and on the other side looking at the sand towers.

And finally, the tree at night!

Ah, so yeah. It's not the greatest looking giant tree, but I like it. :smile.gif:

Another idea, relating to the previous image I posted! How about this:

You could select the amount that you pick up with the arrows. Also, as I was making this gif, I thought "why not get rid of the top and bottom boxes, just have that one box in the middle, with the buttons beside it!"

This would of course be in addition to the keyboard modifier, heh.

Hmm, I just had an idea! What if, in addition to (or instead of) the keyboard modifier, we had a UI addition that lets us pick up varying amounts. Sort of like this:

Maybe the top would pick up just one, the center would pick up approximately half, and the bottom would pick up the maximum number possible. Or, if that doesn't work, other variations could be used (like 1/25%/50%/100%, or just 1/100%.)

    What do you think? :biggrin.gif:

Hmm, apparently there's a client mod that does something similar, plus a few other things (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=162534), but having this idea integrated into the game by the devs would probably be more appropriate (because as we all know, patches sometimes break mods :tongue.gif: )

So, maybe someone could expand on this idea? What other annoying problems do you encounter with the sometimes-clunky inventory system that could be solved with the introduction of key modifiers? :smile.gif:

posted a message on minecraft down because of bin foler?? please help
    Good god guys...

If you just deleted it, the files you deleted might still exist. When you delete files in Windows, they're sent to the Recycle Bin. To restore your files from the recycle bin:

    1. Look at your desktop, and find the icon labeled "Recycle Bin".
    2. Double-click to open it. It will have a list of all the files you've sent to the recycle bin.
    3. Find the one you want to restore (in this case, the "bin" folder).
    4. Right-click on it, and select "restore".

This should restore the "bin" folder to it's original location. Now, try running Minecraft again. If it still doesn't work, you'll have to wait until minecraft.net is back up to download all the files again. Good luck!

The seed "gargamel" is amazing. Look what I stumbled upon:

Tried to get coordinates, but there's a huge red graph thing that covers my screen when I press F3.

    Looks like that's around x:190,y:77,z:3.

    Seed: gargamel

You'll spawn in a cave, there should be a somewhat large opening near you. Walk out of there and be amazed.

Put gargamel into the poll. It's amazing. And while you look, play this for the music.

Couldn't get the damned tag to work. Just c+p the link into youtube.

I really like this one, thanks for posting it!

    Screenshot time!
