I love the Nether. I was ill equipped and did a quick pop in for that one piece, and I was greeted by 3 ghasts. I spent the better part of 5 minutes doing a back and forth a la Legend of Zelda killing them, then relit the portal, and well you know the rest. It was more of an inconvenience than anything, but a good learning experience.
Didn't even know they were doing mod spotlights honestly.
As for the nether, the only gripe I've had with it has been whenever I place my portal it leads to one of the small islands in the middle of the lava lakes, or sometimes one of the small floating islands above the lakes. Best I've gotten so far has been a cliff.
Mine put me off in a nice spot, but the fire got put out. I relit it and traveled, and ended up creating a new portal several hundred away from the first one, deep in a cave. I lost my picks mining netherrack, and had to manually dig through stone to the surface. Stuff like that just falls under, "**** sucks, yo."
Why is it whenever i install something correctly on a clean version of Minecraft, something still manages to mess up on me, i've done everything right it just doesn't seem to work, i keep getting this when it crashes.

Well...as far as I can tell, the whole mod spotlight thing only started recently with the laser mod, giving a total of 2 mods which have been spotlighted for being...mods. I find the sample size too low to really say anything about the contents of the front page just yet.
I think Minecraft Wiki has been doing a similar thing, or linked to a similar thing.
I made a simple hopper/millstone system. I tried to record it with CamStudio, but it looked like I recorded it with a potato. What do you fellows use for recording?
As far as I know, I don't think a single tech-mod has ever been given a mod spotlight on the front page. I don't really consider BTW a pure tech-mod, as it does a bit of everything, but I think many people do.
Anyways, for whatever reason, they don't seem to focus on mods of a technical nature. I guess whoever is in charge of the spotlights is a more casual gamer.

I really liked the addition of rotating axles and gear boxes with an open hand. I know you don't like to modify vanilla blocks, but could you extend that behavior to pistons and sticky pistons?

Check the config. You probably have hardcore bucket enabled.
