I think this is a matter of opinion. How about combining it? Before looking around did nothing but cause you to lose control and crash into something. So why not give the keys their usage, but also allow steering by looking around. I think boats were very hard to control prior to 1.6. I haven't tried them in the new update yet, but personally I think it sounds easier. Still, all opinions.
Wondering how to use your own jar files (ex. a modded client) in the new launcher?
Well here you go: a step-by-step tutorial.
Method 1 Longer, but recommended for the less-geeky.
1. Create a new profile (click: New Profile) with the original version of Minecraft corresponding to your custom jar file. For example, if you have a modded version of 1.2.5, create a profile for 1.2.5.
2. Download/Start Minecraft with this new version. If this version has already been downloaded, skip this step.
3. Go to the Local Version Editor tab on the launcher.
4. Right click anywhere, and click Open Versions Folder.
5. Make a copy of the version you chose in New Profile. Change the name to what you want the new version/modded version to be called.
6. Rename all files under that folder to the same name as the folder, but be sure not to change their extension. For example, if the folder was changed from 1.2.5 to 1.2.5 Mods, then change the files from 1.2.5.jar and 1.2.5.json to 1.2.5 Mods.jar and 1.2.5 Mods.json.
7. Open the .json file in a text editor. Windows users: I highly recommend using Notepad++! I do not recommend using Notepad for this!
8. On the second line, change the ID to the name of the version. This should also be the name of the folder, jar, and json. Be sure that it's still inside of quotation marks. Save and quit.
9. Either mod your jar file, or replace it with your already modded jar file. Make sure the name still matches up with everything else!
10. Start the launcher, edit the profile you made, and choose the newly listed version. Enjoy!
Method 2 Shorter, recommended for the average computer user.
Make sure Minecraft is fully closed before starting!
1. Go to .minecraft\versions\
Need help? Open the launcher, go to Local Version Editor, then right click anywhere and click Open Versions Folder
2. Create a new folder for the profile
Note: Name this folder what the profile should be named.
3. Put your custom jar file in that folder, making the sure that the name is the same as the folder. It is vital that it's the name name. For example, the folder name is ExplosivesMod. The jar file should be ExplosivesMod.jar.
5. Where it says "ID" (line 2) replace <Profile Name> with the name of the folder and jar file.
Note: This should be the name of the folder and jar file
6. Save it as <Name of folder/jar>.json in the new folder. Make sure it gets saved as .json not .txt! You can do this in Windows by surrounding the name in quotation marks.
Note: It must have the same name as the folder and jar!
7. After you have all of this done, start the launcher.
8. Create a new profile and your new version should be an option now!
Notice: Make sure the name of the folder, JAR, and JSON are the same!!
If you want some versions to play around with, head on over to my Minecraft Jars topic.
It has a download link for every Minecraft version released, and a server files for most of them!
my jar downloads turn to zip I need help
I downloading for aether 2
I believe you are opening the jar, and a program such as WinRAR is opening it as an archive. Go to .minecraft\bin\ and replace minecraft.jar. If you do not know how to get here, open the launcher, click Options, and click the directory; this will take you to .minecraft.
THIS IS BROKEN AND EVEN IF IT DID WORK, IT WOULD BE USELESS BECAUSE OF THE NEW LAUNCHER. OF YOU ARE A FORUM MODERATOR OR ADMIN, PLEASE LOCK/DELETE THIS TOPIC.
THIS IS CURRENTLY BROKEN AND I AM WORKING ON FIXING IT
Memorize Minecraft
How much RAM do you need?
Memorize Minecraft is here! An application made in vb.NET that lets you choose how much RAM to give Minecraft. All you do is type it in and press Play. Screenshot:Looks simple, doesn't it? The minimum amount is 256, since Minecraft really can't start with less, and the max, well it's so big you can't fit it on the screen. Put it the same place as Minecraft.exe and run it. But if you don't, it'll download it for you. So where you download this handy little thing? Here.
Mojang will be adding some sort of backward compatibility in 1.6.
But you could use MultiMC or Magic Launcher for now (MultiMC is the best).
I hope this helps. ARogue
1. That only supports versions after the first 1.6 release.
2. Read the posts! We want JARS not programs just to get jars!
IT is my fancy, so I'll input here.
Fragmentation is not disk space, it is a measure of how much disk space is fragmented. So, 10.2 GB of 32.3 GB of files are fragmented. Relevant to what is described in your post, you are not losing disk space; instead a lot of files are being fragmented some way or another.
Here is my error report for my server. I am currently only running Forge with no mods. after 1min or less the server just closes... =/

Is there any way to get the alpha or pre-beta jars?
I am not allowed to post them here as it would violate rules. I can only give links to assets hosted by Mojang and this is all they have on their websites. If you legitimately bought Minecraft, I see no problem in searching the web for uploads of them. If you didn't, buy the game. It's only $26.95/€19.95/£17.95.
I believe the issue is lag related. I no longer have the issue, but before the issue would happen when I would try to connect to my server away from home. (my server is self-hosted by me, not a company) The issue happened in times of lag, which was a lot because the connection was horrible. I rarely get the error now, but when I do, it's in time of horrible lag. -Porky
How do you launch the launcher? With this, you can click to choose the amount of RAM you want! Currently the only options are a few preset RAM options. In the next updates, expect more! It may eventually be open source, too. Developed in Visual Basic by Elijah Goforth (me)
- Windows Only! -
The application is stand-alone, just like the real launcher. When you first use it, it'll download files to C:\mctools\. Though you can't see the status, it happens. It is very quick and should take about 1 second. Now includes a button for SkyDaz's OptiFine installer!
Download Latest (v2.00) [link]Flexible! Downloads other files when needed.

I think it should be on by default, just saying.

Well here you go: a step-by-step tutorial.
Method 1
Longer, but recommended for the less-geeky.
Enjoy!
Method 2
Shorter, recommended for the average computer user.
4. If this is a version 1.5.2 or older, open a text editor such as notepad and paste this in:
http://pastebin.com/4jkxPsY4
if it's 1.6.x then paste this in
http://pastebin.com/Mre1cdWa
Or, you can download the .json files themselves: 1.5.2- 1.6+

Hope this helps! -Porky

I believe you are opening the jar, and a program such as WinRAR is opening it as an archive. Go to .minecraft\bin\ and replace minecraft.jar. If you do not know how to get here, open the launcher, click Options, and click the directory; this will take you to .minecraft.
This probably is of no utter importance, but the website is assets.minecraft.net. And yes, those claiming it is illegal just do not know their facts.

I am aware of this and will soon upload a fixed version. It isn't quite cooperating with the file it's trying to load.

THIS IS CURRENTLY BROKEN AND I AM WORKING ON FIXING ITMemorize MinecraftHow much RAM do you need?Memorize Minecraft is here! Here.0
1. That only supports versions after the first 1.6 release.
2. Read the posts! We want JARS not programs just to get jars!

Fragmentation is not disk space, it is a measure of how much disk space is fragmented. So, 10.2 GB of 32.3 GB of files are fragmented. Relevant to what is described in your post, you are not losing disk space; instead a lot of files are being fragmented some way or another.

Try running as administratorNevermind. I see it's under Windows XP. You should update your OS. XP is very old and will lose all support in 2014.

It's back and forth now. Sometimes works, other times it doesn't. And it's self-hosted by me. It's on a dedicated server.
