Can I have some help with that? Otherwise brilliant!
Oh, and it's legal as long as its not a .minecraft folder.
How come these are downloading as a .zip file?

It's probably downloading as a jar file, and you think it's zip because WinRAR or something else is probably associated with it. If it IS, just choose All Files as the file type and put .jar at the end
Im using the better than wolves mod for mc 1.5.2 and well when ever i install modloader (Before the mod) it gives me an error message im doing everything correct

ModLoader 1.5.2
1. First, try running the game with no extra arguments.
2. If it still doesn't work, make sure that you have installed the mod exactly as said on the mod page.
3. If it still doesn't work, try with only ModLoader. If it doesn't work, you may have corrupted files.
4. If it works, try adding the mod again.
5. If it still doesn't work, try on the legacy launcher.
6. If it still doesn't work, try contacting the mod developer.
Anyone who tries to do this needs to remember one thing--DRIVERS. Minecraft requires an accelerated graphics card/driver. The best bet will be to modify an open source OS like Ubuntu.
How do you get around the error - Job 'Version & Libraries" finished with 1 error(s)!
Everything is named the same. I know I have done everything correctly yet the .jar file seems to be corrupt. (I copied a 1.5.2 jar file and added Optifine to it if it helps) I am also doing this on a Mac if it makes a difference. (Probably does as I haven't found a good tutorial for Mac yet but hoping you would know)
If there is anything else you need just say so and I will get it.
I'm on Windows, so I don't know if it's a Mac problem, but I doubt it is. I believe there's something different with META-INF on Macs. If you got it working on the old launcher, copy the jar from there.
Do you know how to get crap out of the appdata\roaming\.minecraft folder? I hate that you can't have different versions of forge or mods installed because you're stuck with one \mods and \coremods folder.
Dinnerbone, if you read this, break out of the "default directory" idiocy and see if you can't allow Minecraft to be installed anywhere the user wishes.
Break out of your idiocy, and realize there's already an option for that in the new launcher. If ModLoader/Forge still jumps back to .minecraft, then it's the mod's fault.
Thanks for this, it showed me how to setup both my modded 1.5.2 and a new 1.6.1.
Do you know how to manage multiple sets of mods through this? You only have one /coremods and /mods folder under the %APPDATA%/.minecraft folder. Do you still need to maintain separate installations of minecraft, use the /versions directory of the different ones and reference these in the "Game Directory" in the profile?
I haven't tried, but with resource packs being in the root, I'd assume it will still be able to access it. Changing the directory would simply make a new ".minecraft," so still, should be fine, though I haven't tried. To sum up what I just said, it should be able to find /mods as in ModLoader and Forge just fine without any changes. If it doesn't work, tell me and I'll try to find a workaround. Also, with this logic and profiles, you could set different directories to have different mods in different profiles.
Modding minecraft has changed alot thanks to this launcher... its like 7 times harder to mod minecraft guess i wont be modding as much as i used to. Who knows the method may change the more this launcher is being improved.
Resource packs are going to make it 7...thousand times easier. It'll be as simple as texture packs...which are also now resource packs.
The new launcher isn't as bad as you'd think...if you mess around with it. I found out how to use any JAR you want in it--not just vanilla ones dating back to 1.5.1. See my topic here How To Use Custom Jars In The New Launcher

You have to choose "All Files" and save it as ___.json. You can also surround the title in quotes such as "___.json"

It's absolutely legal.

I'll do that.
That happens sometimes with older JARs such as beta JARs, but you can still play. (I don't know how to fix "bad login.")
