Alright peeplz.
This is how I see the portal going together.
I really liked the steam well that was suggested on the alpha thread, so here's my variation on it.

As much as I hate the idea of HAVING to go to the nether before the Aether, = Lightstone Block
Build the foundation; wait for tree to grow. Fill with water.
The basin is actually.. well, a basin. It's round, like this:

OKay, so the dimensions aren't corresponding, but that's what it'd look like.
As in I-ther versus e-ther? I know that Aether's the stuff that supposedly exists throughout the universe according to the greeks and such, not sure what Ether is.
So, you right click it onto the ground. Then when you walk into it, it gets pushed.
I see.
I see it as an interesting trap idea, but I still don't get the wheel and steering wheel ideas. I mean, how they realte to the detachment block.
I like the pipes. It could add an interesting way to route your own waterfall from beneath your base, and make cool passageways...
Hmm.
Camera: COOL
Soot Ghast: Why?
Mob: Trapsnap
Art description: A Venus Flytrap as tall as the player. Has an orangish-pink mouth, with a green head. The stem is a shade a little darker than lime. Might have a leafy collar around the head, maybe have two smaller mouths as "hands" along it's stem.
Spawn: Spawns on Grassy Soil, within 40 blocks of water across the surface of the overworld, and 20 blocks of water downwards. Only spawns during the day. MUST spawn in an area that gets sunlight.
Behaviour: Hostile, but rooted to te block it spawned on. Easily avoided, but the longer it lives, the larger the likelihood of it spawning an adjacent companion...
Attacking: It can snap it's head over an adjacent block. The head then snaps back, and this is a good time to hit it. You'll have to dance around it, lunge when it's open, and jump back when it strikes.
Drops: .... got any ideas?
Special Quirks: When it spawns, it makes the block directly below it a "root" block. You have to hit this block with a shovel 15 times to kill it from below, but each hit counts as 1 use.
Health: Root Block: 15 Trapsnap: 5
So, I suppose you could let them grow and then kill certain ones, so that you'd have protection around your base from creepers and skelies and such, because mobs can hurt each other...
In SMP, it might be interesting, but it's arbitrary, and it kinda goes against the wetsandbox feel of Minecraft. Classes are restricting. Minecraft is supposed to not be.
There should be some sort of passive yet irritating mob in the ether, like... a hummingbird! it zooms around and circles you, so it decreases your walk speed by .4, because you don't want to get impaled on his beak....

I approve.
Maybe we could get Nabisco to sponsor the game and let us make Oreos...?
YES.

I saw suggestions for a steering wheel and a wheel.
What is this detachment block..?
