Metalmeerkat posted a message on How environmentally friendly are you?Global warming on one of my maps caused the sea level to rise 2 meter, wiping out the indigenous population of beach creepers. The sheep have been led to near extinction in the harvest of their wool, leading to the endangerment of wolves as their food source dwindles. My use of mine tracks to crisscross biomes has led to saturation of poisonous heavy metals in the soid, killing nearby flora and fauna. With the lack of sheep keeping the undergrowth at bay, parasitic plants grow wild in the forests uncontrollably, leaving extremely dense, dry foliage and dead trees. Thus natural wild fires are catastrophic and scar the land in bouts of terrible rage. With the extreme changes in habitat, pigs and cows die out in the local region. And with all this extra carbon dioxide released into the air, the oceans acidify, with devastating results to the fish and squid. The acid rain is also particularly corrosive to the exposed bones of skeletal archers, killing many of them and leaving many more venerable to infectious diseases. The zombies sensitive reproductive cycle is also thrown off my the climatic changes, leading to a significant decrease in their birth rate. The spiders were already screwed with the wonton destruction of their habitat - abandoned mineshafts - when I was collecting the minecart tracks. As for the rest of world, well, see, with all the nether portals I opened up for fast transportation . . . I . . . uh . . . may have let a few ghasts in. Like, an entire colony of them have settled in the nearby mountains. And seeing how ghasts use explosive projectiles to kill their prey, and seeing how ghasts perceive anything that isn't stone or dirt as prey, the world has gone to hell, literally.Posted in: Survival Mode

DooM_Marine_99 posted a message on Creepers will open doors in 1.2?I hope during further refinement of this idea, they consider some things:Posted in: Discussion
1: If they should be able to bust down doors, make that the case only for wooden ones, and give the player some time to react (like, they bang on the doors three times (indicated by a banging sound), then open the door with a loud bang sound. Would be interesting. But again, only for mobs in pursuit, not ones chilling outside that happened to wander over.
2: Would give iron doors much more of a use and make them more of a necessity to obtain.
3: Perhaps longer beating-open-the-door times for mobs which pose a higher threat? Creepers would perhaps be the slowest, giving player more than enough time to react and prepare/flee, than say a lowly zombie that, while an easy foe, has superior strength and is able to bust down a door in little preparation time. Almost reminiscent of the zombies in RE.
All around a good idea I think, provided there's sound indicators and some time of preparation. -

All I can say is Wow! You've inspired me to do my own Survival no mod massive structure build. I have Dynamic Height installed and I was thinking of doing the Biltmore Estate(since noone has ever done it, I think)or another historic castle. I'll provide links when I get it started. Only problem with Biltmore is the lack of plans(Vanderbilt family is very stingy with them). Good luck on the rest of that castle.
Although I say "do what you want, and dont let someone else say 'its already been done'"... I know someone posted in this thread like page 1 or 2 (or maybe it was the first trainwrecked thread) that they have a pretty damn nice rendition of B Estates already going.
EDIT: Silverbullit is doing it, maybe?
I say, you should do it too, if thats what youre called to build, but if youre looking for other 'not yet built' massive projects.. there are TONS of them available.
I still have on my list;
Buckingham palace, The Canals of Venice (i'll almost for sure do this one), Cinderella's Castle in disney world (there are like 7 versions of this castle in the various parks around teh world), St Basil's Cathedral (now THERE's a challenge), Matchu Pichu (sp) or any ther of the dozens of MASSIVE temple complexes in the S American and Central American jungles, or the Holy Grail of massive Builds... the ENTIRE Vatican city (I will likely do this one as well someday) Not to mention all the ancient Greek and Roman temples and the Coliseum.
Point is, do what you like and damn the nay-sayers, but there are scores and scores of not touched (to my knowledge) massive projects still waiting to be launched for the first time.
happy building....
Peace.
Edit II: Hell, use my plans, and rebuild this castle and do it better than me. I wont be offended or feel challenged in THE LEAST! I'll be flattered. -

Knights Quarters
Upper Courtyard Concourse
New Tree farm
___________________________________________________________________________
Knights Quarters
What we are focused on here is the area of the castle between the Gard Tower (second tallest tower located in the left half of the structure) and the Royal Quarters (the big building on the right side)
A couple RL photos, and a good shot of the structure as it exists at Legoland.
Actual photos of this side of the castle are few and far between. I assume that is because of the lay of the land around the castle.
First I clad the foundations (first three stories) and then went straight up with the Knights quarters exterior wall. Then a few blocks up on the rest of the phase to feel it all out:
Next, lay in the connection to the Guard Tower:
And finishing up by laying in the other side of the exterior walls:
add the crenelations at the top (they ended up being completely redesigned and relayed... more on that later)
OK inside (cobble that will be removed when the interiors go in) and outside (white wool) of the Exterior wall are done. This was the easy part.
______________________________________________________________
Upper Courtyard Concourse
Next; the Interior wall of this phase (faces into the upper courtyard)
The challenge: 1)have to make the windows of three stories fit in a balanced way between the Guard Tower and the Royal Quarters, 2) have to make the windows at the same height as the windows on the exterior wall so the floors will fit in between correctly (later) and the biggie 3) the roof lines are very complicated on this structure, and matching them up was a monster puzzle. Tore out and rebuilt the roofs, the tops of walls, and the crenelations over, and over, and over, and over (at 30 blocks high w no fly & no net)... until I finally got to a compromise I can live with.
Hard to work from a template when this is the standard view :wink.gif:
Here we go:
I've spared you all the wrong permutations, the trail and error, and the takes downs, and just jumped ahead to the finished wall.
First story done (version #3)
Most of the first story to the left of the door will eventually be replaced with cobble because the stair to the Royal Quarters fifth story main entryway will go in right up against that wall there (and I will recycle the wool).
Right about this point in the build I got to experience a VERY close call... While I was on the wall laying in the windowsills for the second story ... LIGHTNING HIT THE COURTYARD about 10 blocks from the structure! Wish I could have caught a pic of it. After changing my drawers, I exited and saved lol.
Survival Interlude: getting ready to deal with this pair of nere-do-wells,
Mob fighting is pretty old hat at this point, and I comfortably can take the time to f1, pic, pic pic, f1, swing, if the mood strikes me.
Quick run up a tower to snap a look down shoot:
Notice the dirt scaffolding hiding in there, and see the bed?
The jump/die/spawn/collect-the-dropped-inventory has become a common building tactic at this point. (must plan where the bed is and not jump in the wrong spot.... and a mob death near the bed is a nightmare as you respawn nekid but still in the fight.
AHA I did snap a shot of a test wall going across in an attempt to run a roof-line out and across for a test fit.
Second story on the interior wall is done (version #3):
Fianlly, the third story, the attic peak and one layer of roof are done (version eleventy million), and I found a spot EXACTLY the right distance so that my distance setting would pick up teh close wall but not the far wall (12 block space between)
So satisfied to hit this point that I decided to wait there for a sunset photo:
Time for roofs; After all the re-building I did as the second wall came up, the roofs went on without issue;
And... DONE (please ignore the dirt/ladder photo pillar)
It doesn't seem as striking or impressive as the Gatehouse... but its actually a bigger build, and took a lot longer than I expected. I have a feeling that the Royal Quarters building (the big part of the castle) is going to be a HUGE endeavor. I predict that rather than build it one wall at a time as I have done everything so far, I will probably change styles and build it story by story.
_____________________________________________________________________
New Tree farm
Pretty self-explanatory. It is planted under the upper courtyard.
Planted:
Ready to harvest and replant:
Aspens
Pines
Maples

BTW photo:
Damn Endermen, one of them chewed a hole in the Guard tower roof... I'm constantly following them around, cleaning up after them... I think they must be two year olds or something.
I DO NOT have an access ladder to this roof lol.

Swervish posted a message on NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE (308L X 128W X 155H) -Survival -No ModsThe Foundations UpdatePosted in: Screenshots
Include in this update:
The Grotto
The Gatehouse Hall
The Knights Tower
The Knights Quarters foundations
The Kings Quarters Foundations
_____________________________________________________________________________
The Grotto
I am taking a little artistic license here. The actual castle doesnt have a grotto... but mine does. You will notice if you go back to page 1 that I planned from the beginning to include this little feature. No reason in particular... just wanted it.
Right here is where I will cut a path to the sea.
The cut is in down to sea level (always need the cobble anyway :smile.gif: )
Ant the Grotto itself. I will dig it deeper into the foundations when I start the interior builds
So take the cut down one more level, and break away the earth dam.. let the water roll in.
And after 30 minutes of bucket work, the cut is full. I will deepen the canal later (maybe)
_____________________________________________________________________________
The Gatehouse Hall
This is the part of teh structure that ties the Guard Tower to the Gatehouse. It is the smallest part of the white Castle itself, and went up in under two hours (not counting shearing lol)
The first section is up... I gotta stop taking pictures in the dark.
And the outer wall is done
On to the inner wall (facing the inner courtyard).
The staircase REALLY didnt want to fit aesthetically. It took almost two hours to build/rebuild re-rebuild etc.
And a roof, meaning I can tie into and finish the roof on the Gatehouse
I went ahead and took the time to finish the Gatehouse tower roofs as well.
The Gatehouse is officially done except glass and interiors.
And a shot from inside
_____________________________________________________________________________
The Knights Tower
So now its time layout the Knights Quarters footings so I can place the Knights Tower.
I am going to try to introduce a different building technique that I started using on the Gatehouse Hall walls, and have been using almost exclusively for tall parts of the structure. Im sure it has been used by legit builders since about day 2 of MC. But I just discovered it, and Im going to try to show it with pictures.
First empty your inventory completely, cause your gonna die in a second. Then, put the right number of blocks in one inventory space, stand on the right spot and hold your jump key and your 'action key' (whatever key you use to place a block) and build what I call a jump pillar that is exactly the right height.
Then... jump off and die.... when you respawn, come back and place a ladder all the way up your pillar.
Then just build a series of pillars right next to each other. But each time you finish a pillar to the right height, instead of jumping, just slide back down the ladder and run to the next spot, and back up you go. It takes a WHOLE lot less clicks and a lot fewer fall-off deaths.
Before you know it:
You'll notice in the top of the pic, just behind and to the left of the tower, I had to make a significant lowering of the ground by making a diagonal cut, just to make the Knights Quarters fit.... gonna be a WHALE of a lot of earth/stone moving here when final elevations go in.
Plop on a cap room and a roof, and done.
And lay in the basement floors
_____________________________________________________________________________
The Knights Quarters foundations
So, the Knights Quarters Tower, footings and basement floors are done, time to build the foundations
I used a combo of jump pillar building and click click click building.
And lay in wood 'first story' floors and done;
_____________________________________________________________________________
The Kings Quarters Foundations
The process here was nothing new; excavate, mark out with torches, lay footings, build foundations, add first story floors (I did not flatten the earth below, or lay basement floors on this section yet)
The footings are in, and mostly underground by 3-12 blocks. If you look closely, you can see the cuts in the ground
HEAVY excavations are required in some places here to reveal the structure.... but guess what... need the cobble anyway lol.
Exterior Foundation wall going up
The basic outline is done, and a few interior foundations as well... I was in the zone for about 6 hours here... forgot to take pictures.
All the foundations finished and up to final grade.
And the floors start going in... going to use all my remaining wood here Im afraid
Notice that every room has a ladder opening at the top... while building the foundation walls I got REAL tired of falling off and living, cause I would be completely lost. so I built a ladder in EVERY room so I could climb up and see where I was.
And the Kings Quarters foundations are done
Notice there are no floors in the two towers, spiral stairs (yet to be designed) will fill this, not floors. Also in one square room where a 'grand staircase' will eventually be, (also yet to be designed).
and
and
DONE!
The entire structure is laid out, the foundations are done and the first story floors are done.
____________________________________________________________________________________
That's it for now.
I have averaged 20-30 hours per week playing/building this project and about a month has elapsed to this point... about on the pace I expected. I have encountered WAY fewer problems than I expected. A project of this scope always comes with surprises. It has been relatively easy sailing so far. No major setbacks (.jar file catastrophe not withstanding).
I expect it to take about another month to completely finish the exterior. I have given myself a deadline goal of feb 20th mostly because as the weather warms in late Feb, I will be really itching to do a lot of fishing. Cabin fever will hit me HARD when the white bass start running, and I wont be as interested in sitting in the dark at a computer desk. :wink.gif:
So in a sense, this update constitutes a halfway point of sorts.
From here; full speed ahead.

Regular_Hexahedron posted a message on The 9 Types Of TeleportationFew people realize that Minecraft has several different types of teleportation, all of which can be harnessed for different travel purposes. Here's a brief rundown.Posted in: Survival Mode
1: Two Way Nether Portals
Two nether portals that share ideal enough coordinates to both link to each other. Two-way portals allow you to quickly pass back and forth between a place on earth and a place in the nether as often as you like. I recommend that each of your bases contain a two way nether portal, so that you can depart and return to any base you have through a fast travel network.
Your two way portals in the nether should be linked by sheltered hallways, so ghasts cannot see you while you travel between portals. Ghasts cannot see through glass, nor destroy cobblestone, so I often use a cobblestone hall with glass windows in scenic spots. Tunneling through netherrack also works.
2: One Way Nether Portals
A one way nether portal is a usually earth side portal that sends you to a portal in the nether, but does not have any portal return to it. This occurs when there is another portal on earth with a more ideal coordinate match for the return trip.
One way portals are extremely useful, since they often allow you to instantly teleport to the same location in the nether from many different places. If you place a two way portal in your base, you can then place numerous one way portals nearby on earth to quickly return to your base through the nether. Since mobs cannot enter portals it's safe to leave one way portals outside on earth, for quick access home when night falls.
To learn more advanced uses for one way portals consult my portal conduit thread, to learn how to automatically sling players across the universes.
3: Simple Ender Pearl Teleportation
Ender pearls can be thrown to teleport the player a short distance. This can allow you to instantly bypass obstacles, but the difficulty in obtaining pearls often makes this impractical to do too often. They can be very handy when exploring caves and other areas with dangerous broken terrain.
I recommend bringing ender pearls with you to the end battle, since the obsidian platform you spawn on may be in mid-air, or even hanging above void. A single end pearl can save you the danger of constructing a bridge while the dragon attacks you.
4: Ender Pearl Summoning
Ender pearls can be saved in unloaded chunks, allowing players to summon each other back to places they've already been before across any distance. Consult the long distance ender pearl teleportation tutorial to learn how.
5: Ender Pearl World Hopping
Also by saving ender pearls in unloaded chunks, players can teleport across immense distances. This allows you to travel thousands of meters at a time, even to chunks that nobody has ever seen before. You can also arrange to appear in specific coordinates of your choice. Consult the long distance ender pearl teleportation tutorial to learn how.
6: Death
Death (in non-hardcore mode) is a form of teleportation. If you have no items or experience to lose it can be a very effective way of quickly returning to your spawn or bed. You can also modify your spawn point automatically using pistons and redstone, to teleport to a different place each time you die. Consult the death elevator thread to learn these techniques.
7: Vehicles
When you enter minecarts or boats you teleport into them. This allows you to fit through 1x1 block holes, pass through solid lava unharmed, teleport upward to inaccessible areas, and do other fancy tricks. If you can click on a vehicle you can teleport into it, regardless of the obstacles in the way. Then simply exit, and you'll still be beyond the obstacle.
8: Sleep
Beds share some of the same traits as vehicle teleportation, in that you can enter a bed through obstacles. But beds also can be used to teleport through diagonal walls upon sleeping or dying, and you can use pistons and redstone to modify where a bed sends you. Consult the dream door thread to learn how to do that.
9: End Portals
End Portals obviously send you to the End. But assuming the dragon is defeated and a return portal is waiting for you they also effectively act as a quick way of returning to your spawn without dying. And they can be used to create non-lethal no-sleep required versions of the death elevator and dream door I linked to above.
What's unique about end return portals is that every player who passes through them is returned to a customizable space. An End portal is a shortcut back to your own home across any distance. This also makes the end an ideal place to transport items quickly. Players can access the end from whichever stronghold is nearest to their base, exchange items in the end, and then return back to their own homes. This effectively lets you skip the distance between strongholds when transporting items between players. And if you farm or harvest anything in the end itself, you can also access that harvester from any of the 3 end portals.
Unfortunately you are limited to using the 3 end portals that spawn with each map, so you should build in areas that let you take advantage of them as much as possible.
In Conclusion
These 9 forms of teleportation are a varied toolbox for the Minecraft traveler. And please feel free to suggest any forms of teleportation I may have overlooked (other than plugins like /spawn and /home commands which aren't part of the core game). - To post a comment, please login.

and I've been refreshing the page since then :tongue.gif:
Awesome job on the knights quarters its really taking shape now. And I can finally see why you need so much wool.
1
just forfeited it. :tongue.gif:
Sorry, apparently sheep actually do drop wool when shorn. So heres my concept design: adult sheep will follow the baby and are undeterred by wheat. The baby however, is attracted by wheat. So, you make a hole with a pressure plate at the bottom. The pressure plate activates a piston that stops the adults from following. Then you lure the baby sheep in and the adults try to follow but are stopped by the piston.
2
1. Yes
2. Yes, spiders can climb any type of block.
I would, however, recommend against building a mob tower, because you will need to kill 4 spiders on average to get one piece of wool; and 12 on average to get the same as from a single sheep. Also, you'll end up with thousands of spider eyes. :tongue.gif:
