Are there diminishing returns of demon will per type-of-mob in-a-row? Killing a giant heard of endermen was nearly filling 3 common gems before, but something seems to have changed; I got half of one this time.

File format is not important; more modern formatting systems really only support larger file / partition sizes and are supported by different OSes and software.

I was concerned about journaling overhead for NTFS / ext4, which I don't believe exFAT has, but FAT32 is consistently rated the worst for SSD use.

@et_eito, I think memory might still explain why it used to run fine and here's why:

Using max 1GB was fine in the beginning because there wasn't a lot going on. At some point, though, things got busy enough that it needs the whole 1GB Xmx, so garbage collection (very CPU intensive) has to get really really busy to free up memory. Since you've got 16GB, just nudge your Xmx up to 2048 or 3072 MB instead of that stingy 1G. You may want to add a low-ish Xmn argument and increase your Xms to somewhere between Xmn and Xmx.

(Please understand that Xmn, Xmx, and Xms are sometimes the subject of hot debate in this community and subject to many many variables. Your mileage may vary listening to my advice, but it's what I'd try; experiment for yourself and read up on what they actually mean. Xmin, Xnormalsize, Xmax is kind of how I keep them separate in my head, even if doesn't represent a perfect understanding of what they actually do. Also remember that Xmx isn't the actual maximum size java will occupy in your memory; it may only represent 50% to 80% of the actual space java uses in your memory, so don't set it at 16GB and then go crazy loading chunks or building 10,000-chicken-per-second farms.)

Side note: I only just noticed the mod load. Yes, you absolutely need to give your server more RAM. Consider running Opis, too, to see if anything in particular is jumping out on the graphs. Sometimes mods bug out (One mod on your list used to have this occasional-but-not-every-server-was-affected thing where a mob's pathing algorithms were eating half a server's resources), and other times unexpected things happen like chunks or whole dimensions fail to unload when they aren't in use.

Chunk-loaders would also explain things. Allocate more RAM if you're going to have busy chunks loaded.

You may not have the executable bit set. Try `chmod 775 /path/to/the/thing/start.command`.

posted a message on Optimizing File System Allocation Size for Minecraft Servers

I'm creating a new partition on an SSD to house my Minecraft server. It seems like file-system allocation unit sizes might matter here due to the (probably) specialized nature of Minecraft disk IO.

I only know enough about this specific topic have an idea of what I don't know; has anyone experimented, done the research, or know the specific facts that make a size the optimum one?

Alternative questions: Does it even matter more than .0001%? Does it depend on the file system much? (I was thinking exFat, but am not opposed to NTFS or ext4.) Are there Java arguments that impact disk IO that allow more dimensions of optimization or complement a size choice?

Tungsten? Nope. Not without Industrial Coils. That is 2MW minimum.

Don't need Industrial Coils; use Microturbines!

I agree that Performance Engines aren't required tech, but I'm skeptical that you can smelt Tungsten with 4 gasolines.

And considering rv3 is still beta, supporting it is not high priority yet.

While it is technically beta, if you ask in their channel, they suggest rv3 over stable. It was like that for rv1 to rv2 transition, too. An End-Of-Life stable distro promotes the beta to live IMO.

I added PortalGun and iChun utils (both for 1.7.10), with no other changes, and Chromaticraft started crashing on launch. Disabling the two mods (plus ichun portalgunsounds) still crashes.

    Crashlog: http://paste.ee/p/SJz3l

    FML latest: http://paste.ee/p/qggOu

    Why?

    -----------

Edit: I can see that one file has changed today: minecraft/mods/Reika/ChromatiCraft/Music/file_list.dat

Why would that file have changed when I didn't mess with that mod?

    -----------

    Final Edit:

Deleting that folder makes it work again without portalgun. Re-enabling portalgun makes it crash again.

Deleteing that folder and enabling portalgun at the same time makes it work correctly.

    Strange.

I just planted two plots of a single sapling 10 or 20 blocks apart and walked away. It took a while, but they grew.

Edit: Off-topic side-note, iChun's site has been down for days (weeks?). Is there a mirror for the portal gun that you guys got it from?

    It does not.

Harsh. IIRC he codes to problem solve, so he's got a few logic bones for 6th grade math.

I was looking at the GeoStrata Engraved blocks. I notice the top of the block only lines up correctly when it's lined up east-west. Any chance you could make it more like Wood where it matters which face you place it against it to determine how the lines go?

Reika, I can't sort, space-click my whole inventory, shift-doubleclick all stacks of one item, or *even shift-click* stacks into the Scalable chest. Furthermore, if I pick up an item and decide I'm on the wrong page, I can't click Next or Back without dropping the stack. I also can't put items in the first-available slot if all the slots on the current page are used up.

The Scaleable Chest is cool, but these things are important to me for it to be useful as anything but a Boring Machine's dump chest (and even then; it's difficult to manage as an inventory except when you're cherry-picking ores out of it).

Any chance improvements like this are on your list somewhere?

Using Pneumatic Item pumps on the Liquefaction machine causes sand to just get sucked right through: Sand into Hopper > Liquefaction machine > Pneumatic Item Pump > Sand into chest. Nevermind... Remembered the WhiteList.
