That means you happen to have a software package installed which enables RAR compatibility. Not only is such software not available for Mac users, but it's unlikely to be available for another Linux user unless they know how to find and install it.
And even if they did, why would you make them? ZIP format is a massively compatible, historic standard, and it does a stellar job. There's no sense to using RAR, even to target Windows, unless you actually want to exclude people.
It's more of Microsoft's attempts to dominate by brand lock-in. They fool people into thinking: 1) that because Windows is majority, Windows proprietary things are also majority; and 2) that a majority proprietary thing is preferable over a minority but compatible thing.
Both ideas are false. You're really better off with ZIP than RAR.
I was about to post a similar question. I tried EVERYTHING with the 'resource-pack=<FILE>' and 'resource-pack-sha1=<HASH>' lines in server.properties on Minecraft 1.10.2, including but not limited to the following:
lol Apologies for dropping you in a field defenseless, in the middle of the night. I realized this problem and fixed it an hour after you downloaded the map. Players will now find it morning, giving them a chance to prepare before mobs will spawn.
The way I learned to use the Elytra was to 1) run, and 2) after jumping, keep hitting jump repeatedly. At some point you can stop, but I usually keep hitting it like a madman anyway.
There was a critical point made in the intro booklet for "The Institute" which I'm sorry that you missed. I'm sure it would have spared you some frustration.
Otherwise I think my target audience consists of people much more curious to explore the areas provided. The lack of instructional boundaries was quite intentional.
On Mac OS X, Minecraft world saves directory can be found at ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves.
Also, RAR is probably the wrong choice. It's Windows-specific, and can't be created or read by OSX users.
Perhaps use ZIP instead. On OSX this is a simple matter of right-clicking the folder in Finder and selecting "Compress <FOLDER NAME>" from the context menu.

I opened an old Minecraft world from 2014 (v1.7.9) in version 1.20.4, and found the map_#.dat files unreadable.
Managed to identify a few missing/outdated NBT properties. Wrote ~80 lines using Libmcmap to update them. Now 1.20 reads them fine! 🥳
I made these changes to each map_#.dat file:

I have migrated the source code to Github: https://github.com/petermarkley/libmcmap
Former Dropbox links will be deprecated.

Released libmcmap v0.4 with new MinGW make target for Windows, due to (modestly) popular request.

The resource-pack-sha1 line doesn't take a URL; it takes an SHA-1 hash. See the Wiki for more information.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks are having similar issues. Some of them claim to have it working with Dropbox, and many others give instructions that conflict with yours. Some of them are already using MediaFire and still having issues, and one actually moved as you suggest, and it still didn't work.
I was hoping for something a little less ... aimless.
I found a couple people saying this feature might be broken or unreliable in Minecraft itself, and at this point I'm very inclined to agree with them.
At least until someone comes along with actual technical knowledge of the problem.

Thank you so much for playing and making videos!

The aforementioned "extensive use" of libmcmap was - you guessed it - an adventure map! Go check it out!

The epic scenery was made with libmcmap. If you get stuck, odds are you haven't quite explored enough.
