Just tried this out, and I absolutely love it!

And I re-read some of the other comments, too! I definitely dig the idea of having a sink which could act as a constant source of water in our homes! Add that in with counters, and you've got yourself quite a lovely little kitchen here! If only that mod which had refridgerators would work for me.

Anyhow, awesome work! Just wanted to come back and let you know I'm playing with this, and never going back!

This looks great! I can't wait to give it a try!

Keep up the excellent work! I hope you DO branch into making kitchen counters, as I find I have difficulty in decorating my kitchens to actually LOOK like kitchens. I wouldn't mind some kind of kitchen-counter looking block that actually works like a workbench, for that matter.

I wonder how this will look alongside my Last Days textures... if it uses default textures, maybe it'll fit right in?

    Heh, I'll find out soon!

I think that constructing walls should not only be okay, but actually become a PART of the requirements of establishing Ironville as a town! Walls are what any rational civilization use to keep out the bad guys... be they monsters or just plain old bandits. That being said, I've not got a wall.

Just haven't had the time. But I -did- bring one of the town guards from "Sheepton" over to Ironville in order to help keep the place safe.

Now I just have to go get myself a few cats from in the Jungle, to keep the creepers at bay.

    Latest Update:

Ironville now has two houses: The one I share with my wife, Jennifer, and the original house in which the butcher and his lady friend are residing. Jennifer is a town guard I recruited from over in Sheepton, and does a pretty good job of keeping the monsters at bay. Thanks to the dungeon I stumbled across, I spawned us a couple of iron golems. It actually spawned THREE, but I killed one of them because it felt too cheap otherwise.

Besides, he dropped some iron, which I used to make a new Iron Sword. My old one can get recycled for repairs now.

I've been hard at work preparing a third house, one which will hopefully belong to the next adult resident to be born in Ironville. Depending on how much time it takes me to make cake, it'll either be our (Jennifer and I) or Mr. Butcherman and his wife's kid. Two families isn't much to populate a town with, though. I may need to go hunting further out in the wastelands to find some more villagers willing to come back with me.

There's bound to be other towns nearby besides the ones listed as a part of the challenge.

    Latest Update:

This marks my twelfth failure. Despite the village's flourishing, my own survival could not be guaranteed. While digging around for some sign of gold, I was caught off guard by a creeper and exploded down into a cavern where two other creepers waited. I managed to kill one of them before it exploded, but the other flanked me from behind and got me before I could turn around.

This challenge is hard enough, but playing it on harcore almost seems cruel.

    Latest Update:

The second house has been finished, much of the land has been flattened out, and the original 'small farm' has been replaced by a much larger one. I've also built a small stable, which will be expanded as the need arises, for the purposes of breeding cows. Now I just need to go exploring the wasteland for cows.

Maybe I'll even go so far as to hunt down that other village mentioned in the challenge!

I've adjusted the original starting house, so that it only has the one door in back. The fenced-in area, which now leads out into the farm field, also serves as protection against zombies. Even if they COULD break through it, my own house is just across the street, and I have windows there to observe.

Let's just call it 'technically allowable' and leave it at that.

Once the village is a bit more 'settled', I'll see about uploading some images. Right now, there's not much to see.

    Latest Update:

I've been trying this challenge again, this time with Minecraft v. 1.2.5.

I have to say, without the Mo' Creatures mod installed, the challenge has been going much easier. Not having ogres pounding down my walls left and right has turned this from a nightmarishly difficult challenge to... well... something rather enjoyable and rewarding. I'm currently beginning construction of a second house, which will serve as my own.

Once that's done, I'm going to finish flattening out the land around the village and begin construction of a third home.

I'll pop back in to post status updates as the project progresses.

Ahh... yes! Just what I was hoping to find today!

Now I can finally get around to seeing if this one is better than wolves the other Tree-Slaughtering mods I've been using in the past! Glad to see that it's updated, too! It was harder than hell to find an up-to-date version of Treecapitator... and I still haven't managed to find Timber! again...

    So meh.

Let folks who say that 'this has been done before' blather and whine.

Meanwhile, I'll be punching down trees! With my face!

Okay, that's it. After nine failures in a row, I've decided that my best bet is to try this in just plain Hard-Difficulty survival.

Maybe once I've completed the whole thing like that, I'll be ready to try it again on Hardcore. As it stands, I've died seven times and had the villagers wiped out by an ogre twice. The third villager-death was actually inflicted by a random bolt of lightning during a thunderstorm.

The house burned down around them.

Nothing you can do about -that- kind of thing, though.

As of now, I'm beginning Hardcore Attempt number eight.

This last time, a Flame Wraith got me... I burned to death just a few inches from the village well.

    Whelp, just failed again!

This time, I had a stroke of genius. I re-activated my Minecraft Comes Alive mod, and managed to keep the villagers -mostly- safe by telling them to stay indoors for a goodly portion of the first hour I played. I managed to completely flatten out the area around the village, build a large farm field behind the one starting house, and even completed a second house for myself! Completely in the style of the default villages, so that it blended right in.

Everything was going fine until morning came, and I got distracted trying to kill a spider lurking about on my roof. The damn creeper showed up behind me before I even realized it.

Blocking a creeper explosion at point blank with a stone sword doesn't help much.

Alas. The villagers were all killed in the explosion... and me... the spider got me while I was trying to scramble inside my battered house.

Maybe the fourth time's the charm!

I love a good challenge! I love an unwinnable challenge even more!

Between ogres, werewolves, flame wraiths, an army of the undead, wild wolves, and the occasional creeper out of left field... my ability to chop down trees at an accellerated rate and the random ruins scattered about my world shouldn't give me too much of an advantage over my foes.

Especially considering the fact that I'm now on my third try and already down a citizen!

I'd never call it -legit-... but I think I'm definitely going to give this seed a hardcore playthrough now. Just for fun.

The reason I wouldn't call it legit is because I've got several mods installed which one might consider to be cheating or creating an unfair advantage. Harvesting wood by cutting down the -entire- tree, for instance. Or the additional variety (and frequency) of drops from the monsters in Mo' Creatures.

Still, Hardcore is Hardcore, and there's the added element of Ogre danger too! Nothing says 'screwed' like having the ONLY house in town plowed down by an angry ogre!

This should be a fun challenge! I look forward to seeing what folks do with it!

Thanks for letting me know about the counter. I wasn't sure about that part.

While the lists are surely outdated at all times, I personally believe it's much better than not having one.

I agree with you there, though I do believe there are ways to enhance your security to stop many easily stoppable attacks.

I just want to point out that I wasn't trying to show you up or anything.

I -do- get it. Your solutions really are better solutions than what a lot of people (who basically rely on nothing) are doing. I'm just more painfully aware after the virus-related demise of my previous machine that there's really nothing you can do to stop the spread of malware aside from avoiding it.

So, yeah... to anyone who does download mods with AdFly links... definitely look into these things listed by God of APB here. They're all pretty much the -best- solutions you'll find. Just remember they're not flawless.

Always do everything in your power to ensure your computer is secure. If you insist upon going into unsafe waters... keep system backups separate from your computer's automatic system backups. Understand how a virus can affect your kernel, how it can damage your bios... and most importantly...

... know someone who can fix it when it get's ballsed up.

    Quote from God Of APB

While getting viruses if a huge concern for anyone, there are many ways to prevent malicious things from getting into your computer. Heck, just today for the first time ever, Norton stopped an attempted attack on my computer through an adf.ly link.

So here's a list I've compiled of things you could do to prevent attacks from these links (in no particular order):

    1. Use an AdBlocker. I'm sure there are a few out there, but what seems to be the most popular is AdBlock Plus, which has extensions for both Chrome and Firefox. I'll admit, this might not help so much against malicious content, but should make adf.ly less annoying
    2. Use NoScript to stop untrusted sources from running malicious scripts. I'm currently on a computer without this, so I don't remember if adf.ly's counter still counts down if you block scripts.
    3. Block malicious sites using your hosts file. This file (located in different places depending on your OS) can be used to block anything from being loaded through the Internet. Thus, using this, you could potentially block any domain/subdomain where malicious content comes from. There are many places that distribute hosts files that already have many advertisement/malicious domains blocked, but I personally prefer Dan Pollock's.

I can help you out with this a bit, mate.

    1. AdBlock Plus does keep the ads from showing up! It's quite nice! I've never once had to see an ad on AdFly while AdBlock Plus was active.

    2. NoScript is fine and good... except that you can't tell it to allow AdFly without it allowing every bit of malicious code on the version of the page you're on at the moment through as well. And unless you do that, the counter... yeah... it doesn't work.

    3. Sure, that could work... if one feels like dealing with out-of-date lists, the constantly changing sites which slip through, and the fact that they can put up a thousand new domains automatically in the time it takes you to actually change this setting... therefore providing only a very limited sense of security. Sure.

Point is... there is no such thing as a flawless anti-virus. There is no such thing as internet security. The only way a person can be safe, is to NOT go to places they don't trust.

If that's a problem... so be it. The truth is, it -is- the modder's choice.

But if the modder leaves me with no choice but to put myself at risk, or not use their mod... I really have no problem with not using it.

I play with mods, and support modders, and offer helpful criticism and suggestions because I -like- modders. I do it for their sake. If I can't enjoy their mod, if I can't safely download and test it out... then that's just one less person they have supporting them.

It's no hair off my back, or the backs of anyone who feels the same way.

This isn't an attack on modders.

This is a Call to Reason. You give me the option, and I'll work with you to help you out. I know a lot of folks feel the same way.

I'd love to help support some of you awesome modders out there! I really would!

Trouble is, I have very limited amounts of cash... and AdFly? Yeah... it's bogus. Sure, you get your .05 cents or whatever off the deal, but me? I get to deal with viruses, trojans, and an entire network of advertisements which are just blatant rip-offs and scams for what... you to get a penny every five-thousand times someone clicks on your link?

Sorry... but to me... it's just not worth it. I've got a PoS computer that I'd be more than happy to click your links with.

Just stop, for the love of god, making it the only option.

Or I guess I'll have to start supporting modders who do give me the option. The option is all I ask. If you need the extra few cents... keep the adfly link up too... I'll click it from the library, from my PoS terminal... from work... wherever the hell you like.

But this computer... my good lappytop?

If your mod is only accessable through an adfly link... I don't use it. I'm sorry. I really am. But I've got too much invested into this computer... and there's no Anti-Virus this side of HELL that can catch all the flack ADFLY throws at any unfortunate sap who winds up there.

(As an end-note... I do think this is in the wrong section. It should probably get moved, if a request hasn't been sent in yet. Just checking, of course. Maybe you already have asked. I dunno.)
