OMG! ! ! ! SORRY GUYS!!! I JUST REALISED THE PROBLEM!

    IT'S A PEBKAC ERROR!!!

I HADN'T CHECK THE 'SERVERS' IN MY LIST, I JUST ASSUMED ONE OR TWO WOULD BE OFFICIAL MINECRAFT SERVERS AND I ASSUMED MY FRIEND'S ONE WAS CORRECT/WORKING...

I JUST CHECKED A COUPLE OF RANDOM SERVERS FOUND VIA GOOGLE ( AT http://minecraftservers.org) AND I CAN PING AND CONNECT JUST FINE!!!!

It's probably one of 3 things:
    THANKS FOR TRYING quark8790!

    • Your internet's too slow for MC to work right (unlikely unless you've gone over your cap or something)
    • I don't think so, I tried plugging network cable straight into 2 different modems with 2 different ISPs.
Did a speed test - Ping was 20!
    • Something's eating up your bandwidth (downloads, Skype, heavy web browsing). Try closing some programs.
    • Definitely not the problem, I have a decent ADSL2 + connection and tried MANY many times with ONLY the game running
    • Your antivirus is blocking Minecraft (as every AV is different, there's no way for me to tell you if it is)
    • Microsoft Security Essentials is all I use... Well, there's a general cleaning/optimisation utility called Advanced System Care 7, but I tried with that OFF...
Just about the ONLY thing I haven't tried from countless forum posts and other sites and YouTube videos, is UNINSTALLING the game and reinstalling it.... Is that worth doing??

P.S. Speed Test result and my Profile Settings.....
I'm also curious is the Default 'Minecraft' server that was already there is correct?.. the one named 'Minecraft Server is 124.171.220.140 and I tried connecting to a friend's server with has :25566 at the end...

Can you guys give me some vanilla servers to try?

Background: Windows 7 prof - I first got the game in 2012 but have migrated to Majong and updated to v1.8.1
I was using Wifi to my modem/router with ISP "Iinet" but also tried "Bigpond" and plugging into modem/router with "Bigpond".
I've tried turning off firewall of both Windows and my router, I've removed previous Java version and made sure I have the very latest Java..
I've tried port forwarding although I have little idea what I'm doing with port forwarding - just followed some YouTube vid advice..

I never played online before. Since I couldn't connect to friend's server i tried all the others in the server list - they all come up with red 'X's anyway (after ping attempts).... So I made sure I was with Majong - definitely have Majong account.....

I have tried the game's use version setting "Use highest version" and 1.8.1 ... all to no avail...

Is it odd to have launcher showing v1.5.3 but when the game starts it's the latest v1.8.1?
