Where do you come from? The Great White North

Where did you hear about our server? From the Madrealms website itself (I've previously played Skyland Pirates. Need something to tide me over while waiting for the next episode to start. :P)

posted a message on I do not like the new biome generation algorithm.
I think there should be an option in world generation to choose whether you want random biomes, or "climate-controlled" biomes. I appreciate the idea behind making biomes group by climate, but I think in practice, it doesn't end up being all that fun, and result in boring worlds. At least, the way it's implemented now.

Random biome generation can be "silly", but I don't think there's anything really wrong with that. Silliness is a part of Minecraft in many ways, after all. :P A world with more variety and more interesting biome combinations can be fun and interesting, and it being "unrealistic" doesn't really take away from enjoyment or gameplay, in my opinion.

I believe there are mods out there that will let you generate biomes in random arrangements in more recent Minecraft versions. I really think it should be a vanilla feature, though -- a toggle that lets you choose, when generating a new world, what kind of biome arrangement you'd prefer.

posted a message on New skins : 1.8
    * Alex, not Axel.

You can set whichever skin you like more! So it's entirely a matter of personal preference.

I personally like the fact that there's more variety now, with two different default skins. I think assigning them at random was a nice touch. You can always change it if you don't like the one you got! I think, on the whole, it's a good addition.

posted a message on The most useless feature in Minecraft
There's some features I like more and some I like less, but I don't think any of them are "useless." Even bats, which you ask about in the poll, add a bit of atmosphere to large caverns in the game, which I think is a perfectly good purpose...

posted a message on Can't log on to servers?
I don't think this had anything to do with the Microsoft deal. O_o I don't know what Microsoft will do with Minecraft, but I'm pretty sure their plan isn't "Mwahaha! Let's take all the servers offline for half an hour at a random point of time just to annoy people! Mwahaha!" :P

posted a message on What do you think 1.9 will have?
I'd really hold off most speculation on this for now. It's too early -- 1.8 is still very new -- and the situation just generally seems to be very unstable. I personally would guess that maybe we'll see one more small update, mostly bug-fixes with maybe one or two small features, probably far short of a full 1.9, before the Microsoft deal is finalized; after that there's really no way to speculate at all without information that it's too early for us to have.

posted a message on How do I make my furnaces save excess furnace fuel?
Normally, if you, say, use a lump of coal to smelt just one block of iron ore, the coal will keep "burning" even once the smelting is complete. If you come back a few minutes later, the furnace will be cold, and you'll have one less coal in the fuel slot, and only one iron ingot to show for it. If you want to smelt something else, you'll have to use up another lump of coal.

I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that Fuzed is saying that on some server they've played, the furnace will instead "pause" if it runs out of items to smelt, and stay "hot"; so in the above example, you could come back in half an hour, and smelt seven more blocks of iron ore using the "leftover" heat of that first lump of coal, without using any more fuel. Fuel is saved from being wasted.

I have no idea what plug-in might be responsible for this, myself, or whether it might have been caused by something else, like a bug. Just trying to clarify the question, as I understood it.

    posted a message on Monsters!!!
Torches don't prevent monsters from approaching -- they just prevent new monsters from spawning. Monsters can still spawn in nearby dark areas, and then walk over into the areas you've lit up. So yes, if you want a monster-free environment, you need to put up walls of one sort or another between the lit-up areas where you are, and the outside world.

Yeah, it can be a pain in the butt. I usually compromise by lighting up areas where I'm mining as well as I can, but without being too obsessive-compulsive about it. Occasionally a monster will get in, and a brief battle ensues. It's not too bad. :) Generally I'll have a safe "base" where monsters have no way of getting in at all, where I can go if I want a truly safe environment, but I won't spend tons of time trying to make every area where I mine or build 100% safe. A little monster-fighting never hurt anyone. (Well... it has, but you know what I mean. :P )

posted a message on Problem: Minecart
Is it possible that you accidentally placed an activator rail, instead of a powered rail? Activator rails have this "shakes and ejects you" behaviour by design as of the 1.8 update.

I'm afraid you misunderstand how furnaces work.

Actually, it sounds like Fuzed understands it quite well. They are saying that on some servers furnaces seem to work differently from the norm.
