I'm also worried about making a defensible location. The biggest castle in the world can be easily infiltrated by any guy with a moderate pickax. A lot of you will say "Why don't you just watch your base". All the time. Every day. You can't forage.
My question is, what are you going to do(besides stealth) to your base to stop people. Let's say you've just spawned.
*Carryable light sources are now a possibility. He ruled them out initially as taking too much processing power because of the way lighting worked, but with the new lighting system it may be feasible, and you can even have colored light (glowing fungus, orange-tinted lanterns, etc)
As for air travel, I read this thread and couldn't believe that nobody suggested hot air balloons. Hot air balloons were a somewhat successful method of travel before other forms of air travel were created. Again, smaller hot air balloons could have chests attached to them, alllowing players to transport items through the air, powering this feat with coal and wind. The more coal the player places in the burner would affect air time and height. Slightly larger hot air balloons could ferry players through the sky, as long as coal is abundant. Perhaps if this feature is mastered, Notch could consider adding airships as well. After all, airships are very similar to hot air balloons; the only difference is that an operator of an airship can decide which direction he wishes to go. I also believe parachutes are an excellent idea as well, as parachutes aren't as modern as one may think.
And concerning pig mounts:
The average running speed for pigs is roughly 11 miles an hour (18 kph), whereas the average running speed for humans is roughly 12-15 miles an hour (19-24 kph).
I agree with the hot air balloon. It's somewhat controllable and not machine made. I would also increase the speed of pig. Screw realism!
If you slap together a stick and a conveniently shaped bit of rock, you ain't gonna get a whole lot of variety. A stone axe, hoe, and pick are barely different.
again... nothinh to hide from = no point for hidden bases
theres plenty of people who would just love to purn your base down for the lulz of it, and steal all your blocks. what happens then? your stuck out in the wilderness for a cold night untill you can start over...
Really? Did this ever occur to you that this is a "Game" and from the way it is now if you dont let anyone in your server that is going to "Greif" it or destroy things you dont need a hidden base... If this does happen its your falt for A: having a public server B: Not playing with trustworthy people C: as I said befor no point in having a hidden base if A and B are not the case.
There's a fine line between fair combat and greifing. What's your version of a non-greifing acceptable tactic?

Let's try a mental exercise, imagine facing off an opponent "in the wild", and count how many times you click. A lot is the answer.

I think it's just so you can easily identify them.
