sounds pretty cool, the way you presented it especially with that sexy grate bridge gave you my vote.

Tip: add this to the mojag get satasfaction page, I have yet to see mojag even look in these forums for ideas....

Lol its already up on Get Satisfaction, check the bottom of the OP for the link ^^

Great Idea man! BTW, Make it so that projectiles(Arrows,Bullets from SDK's Mod) Can shoot thru,so it can be made as bunker window. =D (PS. :Skeleton: , :Spider: , :Zombie: and :SSSS: Should NOT be able to see thru!)

    -- [>>-i>] :SSSS:

sounds interesting to be able to shoot through them, but mobs not able to see through them... hmm... but that might just over complicate things a little, and i can only imagine that'll be hell to try and code. I donno, what does everyone else think?

EDIT: Alright, so before i head off to work, i spent some time looking through Get Satisfaction, and for those of you who aren't sure what it is.. Its basically another board that Notch n' Team use to see what we think. So If you guys really do think this is a worth while idea, let them know about it here:
    http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang/topics/drainage_grates

Just post a reply about what you think, and hopefully if it gets popular enough, they'll notice it :biggrin.gif:
i also need to do a lot of editing on it since its in HTML instead of BBCode... So for the moment, it just a couple images and a link to our thread here :tongue.gif:

Cosmetic blocks are great if they are unique. A grate seems like it should have a purpose, though. Wool can be dyed now, so it's actually a great cosmetic material. Sandstone is a great building material. A grate can... be put on the side of a road... I don't make roads, I make walkways. They wouldn't look right with a grate.

Sorry, I can't think of a good reason why this should be added, other than as a cosmetic block. Even then, it's not particularly useful.

    you seem to be contradictiting yourself a bit here (well, more than a bit...);

hey, dont worry, there are plenty of people who, like you, lack imagination.
... really "be put on the side of a road"? please tell me you are joking

uuunnnnnnng. i feel like i'm mean, i hate being mean. sorry if i am but its like 3:30 am here...

it'll be a shame if these grates get implemented, radgh. For you it'll just be another useless block upon many others. A real shame =/

alright! are you guys ready for this? I 'shopped up some concept art. check it out!

edit: @Nihilias, feel free to use this in your OP if you want! :biggrin.gif:

edit2: re-read the OP, question with redstone: should the "off" state be open, allowing things to pass? were it the other way around (the way its written currently), a grate just sitting on its own would not allow anything through, because without any redstone around, it is in it's "off" state

i had been thinking of doing something like this, but not like how you did it. I think this really does capture the artistic side of using grates =D

And hell yes im gonna use this on the OP after i finish this post!~

As for the On/Off states of the grates when redstone is used:
Im seeing grates being in the On position at all times without redstone... and when redstone is used, it resets itself according to the current charge of the restone wire. I'll make note of this in the OP.

back on topic: yeah, iron and ceramic need differences, but i think the mecanics should be left the same. have only iron is still what i'm in favor of.

so if we have ceramic grates and iron grates, with only the iron grates closeable, that would be 3 new block id's. I do not believe that is bad at all. (i've seen suggestions that would require upwords of 20 to 30 new unique id's...)

on of the good things about this, is another use for clay. not everyone likes bricks (i've only placed 8 excluding pixel art the entire time i've been playing minecraft)

I guess im starting to like the concept of ceramic grates always being open, and not effected my redstone. But that can be something for Notch n' Team to decide i think. I'll make note of it in the OP.

    Other uses:
Making a fish tank. 7 spaces of empty space surrounded by glass with an iron grate ceiling with source blocks on it.
ON" the blocks and water flows, since there is water more than 3 deep w/e, you get your aquarium of squids!
OFF' the block if you want calamarie for dinner :biggrin.gif: or w/e ink and giggles n' stuff.

Repeater circuits, makes water fall in unique designs and patterns! (i really gotta go learn how to deal with redstone circuitry. >.<)

also, someone said that redstone would get washed away, this may happen with horizontal flows, but typically, there will be a space you can usethat wont impede flow,
    ex.
    Horizontal flowing - place up/down
vertical flowing - place to the sides

If your wanting every direction "(just to argue with me?)", then why would you have a block there?
these blocks are not so restricted, just thinking for a few short minutes I thought up a few things that (haven't been mentioned? if it has, credit to you as well :smile.gif: )
so I'm sure fixes* to problems we see can either be smoothed out by ideas from the nice people here. OR applied differently to fix the same problem with the mechanics already suggested.

PS: I don't know if there is a troll here or not, but this has got to be the cleanest/nicest thread I've posted.

Im so glad i have 'logic-tanks' like you, raiu_tree, and RouvenT here supporting this thread. I can have some good ideas at times, but im by no means a smart cookie. I would have never thought of nearly half the possible uses for grates like you guys have. Creative waterfalls with the redstone flood grates... genius! Can you imagine just how pretty you can make things with that idea?!~ *drools a little*

I'll try asking Orion, but i don't think our little drainage grates are grand enough to deserve something like that... i'll try asking though *nods*

so far it's six for six :biggrin.gif:

    question about mechanics however...
what would happen if a lava and a water meet within a grate block? I would say the best solution would be only the one there first would continue to go first, however, I am a small bit of a programmer, and i know that that would be hell to code, so i think the better solution would be, for example:

    1) :Water: :Water: :Water: :Lava: :Lava: :Lava:

    2) :Water: :Water: :Water: :Water: :Lava: :Lava: :Lava: :Lava:

    3) :Water: :Water: :Water: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Lava: :Lava: :Lava:

the only other option i can think of would be to say that only the fluid with the closer sourse (stronger flow) would get to continue

anyone else have opinions on this?

Well I see what you are saying with this, and I counter that it wouldn't be that difficult, have three different forms of grate, empty, filled with water, and filled with lava. As soon as water or lava touches the block it would 'transform' so to speak into a different form corresponding to it, and hen not let water pass through. That still leaves the issue of a closed grate surrounded on two sides by lava and water on the other two sides. How would it react when opened? I have no idea. Maybe have a priority list so to say that always lets water in before lava or vice vera. Or it coul just destroy itself or something. Good thinking!

Lets keep this open for discussion for a day or so, and see if anyone has any other ideas on it the subject. Having the grate turn into cobblestone in this situation may make sense, but maybe there's something were not thinking about.

EDIT: Where now on Get Satisfaction!

OK GUYS, i added a poll to the thread!

Now that we've reached above 100 posts and 1000 views, i think this is a good time to put what everyone thinks into a more visual form =]

Grats on the Net Traffic this post is getting!(Its definetly deserved) I hope people actually use the poll, in too many topics have I seen them simply be empty :sad.gif:.

    oh my... good thinking, that's definitely something to ponder about... o.o;

realistically thinking, that would clog the grate with cobblestone. So i imagine it destroying the grate entirely, and only leaving the cobblestone.

    example:
:Water: :Water: :Water: :Water: :cobblestone: :Lava: :Lava: :Lava: :Lava:

and that would suck to loose that grate, but seams to make sense.

I love cooking stuff in the game, but i hate how limited it is atm. Having all these would bring a whole new level of enjoyment to the game amongst all the chaos of all the scary stuff that's been recently added xD

My friends server i play on at times, im the stay at home player and do the farming and i bake stuff all the time while he's out fighting or mining. This would make getting back to the kitchen so kick ass.

One suggestion i have, which has probably been stated already elsewhere on the forum, is having a hunger gauge on the GUI. That drops over time, and when its empty, you take more damage when injured. Thus giving reason to cook and eat, regardless if you've taken damage or not =D

Yeah, its been suggested on a nother topic on these forums, but it is a goo idea. I find it kind of weird that that kind of thing is recieved in either a completely open way, or in a hatefull way :tongue.gif: I do the same thing with the stay at home in the server my friends and I from school use, they go slaughter stuff and strip mine, while I harvest crops and build more houses for new players, however, I sell it to them at the price of a cut of what they all found. Monopolies rule because unless they kill all the pigs and make their own stoves and crops and all that, they cant get their own food haha.

oh, also, something i've seen on some suggestion topics is they put the code for the banner on the OP, like so:
Show your support for Drainage Grates!
    [url=http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=159637][img]http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr337/photodragon/allgratessig01.png[/img][/url]

(dont need to though. glad you like it, took me all of a minute to make ;P (also, if you put the code like so, people can click directly on the pick to be directed to the topic)

Also, has anyone put this on google moderator?

@Xuro: not really shipyards, persay, but more of small dock for just a boat or two at a time.

I can just imagine it now, a 2nd teir dungeon with mossy cobble walls and grate floors! </artistic spasms>

if there is one thing i'd like to suggest, i think the crafting should be changed a smidge:
:_: = half grate (is that what we're calling the kind that is at the top of a block?)
(two half grates still make a full grate)
    :Iron: [] :Iron:
    [] :Iron: [] ⇒ :_: x3 (assuming iron grates can use redstone)
    :Iron: [] :Iron:
which would lead to 3.3 iron per full grate, is that too expensive?

and then for ceramic (which i'm assuming do not take redstone input? I think that's logical), maybe four? i'm not certain... input?

edit: ninja'd about the docks; oh well :tongue.gif:

Thanks a lot again for the signature image, and the correction on the coding ^^ put the code source on the OP as well =D

    *clicks the google moderator thingy*
    does this really work?

The crafting thats up on the OP is merely a suggestion, it'll be up to Notch n' Team to decide on it.

As for the redstone workings.. for the sake of simplicity, im just thinking all the grates will work with it.

    @ninja'd: lmao sorry xD

EDIT: ok guys, OP has been updated ^^

not to sure about the obsidian factories, nor am i really concerned about getting the stuff since its easier for me to bucket up lava and cool the source blocks in a mold, rather then breaking the stuff with a diamond pickaxe. BUT if MechaMage can explain further, or show a diagram.. id so make an obsidian forge just for the fun in it =D

    As for grate shipping yards:

where :Notch: = you + in a boat
and :Blue: = water flowing into a grate

    [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
    [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
[] [] [] :Notch: :Blue: :Water: :Water: :Water:
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
:cobblestone: [] [] [] :Water: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
:cobblestone: :Water: :Water: :Water: :Water: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
:cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:

you can just slide in, and the grate acting like any solid block involving a boat will act like a break, and hold the boat in place. And all you have to do to head back to sea, is turn around and push it back into the water, right click it just before it takes off on its own ^^

as for dams, im sure you could make any damn just out of any solid blocks, then removing the water from one side by filling it in with dirt or something then digging it out. BUT for really BIG realistic looking dams that let out water from one side to another .. i can see it working something like this:

    [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
    [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
    [] [] [] :cobblestone: [] :Blue: :Water: :Water: :Water:
    [] [] [] :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
    [] [] [] :cobblestone: [] :Water: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
    [] [] [] :cobblestone: [] :Water: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:

[] :Water: :Water: :Water: :Water: :Water: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
[] :Water: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
[] :Water: [] :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
:Water: :Water: :Water: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Water: :Water:
