Similar thing happened to me, except I got onto a cliff, with no way down.
I solved it by building a bridge until I'm over land, then dropping gravel down so I could then dig down and explore.
I fell down it once... D:
If not, I better run into my (hopefully) everything-proof bunker/gold cellar.
If it isn't everything proof, I'll try and move to Australia ASAP and try and get citizenship.
If I have to be born Australian, then I'm gonna... Er... Um...
Losing inventory upon death ISNT a bug! It has always been like that in Single Player,
And that's how it's meant to be.

Anyways, I'm kinda unbiased about the update. I love the new features, but the bugs kinda ruin it a bit for me.
On the topic of griefers, I think that password protected 'Private' servers would be a good idea, so that griefers and uninvited people wouldn't be allowed in. =D
I agree with the OP that a new, harder, difficulty should be made for hell, but people should be able to play on peaceful in hell if they want.
Sure, it may not seem like hell for no monsters to be there, but I'm sure there are people who would love to build in hell, I being one of them.
