i agree, a challenge is fun but this is not even cool. this sounds more like a hassle then a challenge.

As I already said, this obviously isn't meant for everyone. I'll edit the OP.

Natharias, could you please be so kind to post what actually IS allowed?

Anything that isn't in the limitations. What, is something unclear?

That does sound really restrictive. Still, if you're enjoying it that's what matters.

Would be interesting to hear of your progress, are you planning on making any significant structures or farms? Your limitations could remove the possibility of doing many things, but not all.

For me, I prefer to have a simpler limitation (map size using world border or not using any wood for instance), then I'm free to use any means to survive (and thrive). It lets you find creative solutions to problems that may otherwise be easy.

Well farms are considered structures, at least in Minecraft. But as for conventional structures, I'm not a fan. It takes time, tons of resources, and planning. All it takes are a few well placed TNTs to render them useless or vulnerable. The few times I played multiplayer and fought, I loved using TNT.

And even in singleplayer I don't generally make houses or castles. I just make a tower-like farm with a bed somewhere. At least before the limitations. Now? I'll probably just make a wheat farm until I can find melons. Although wheat can stack a lot more in single stacks, melons can be grown quite quickly if you get enough stems and have an efficient farm you're used to.

I can't see how anybody could possibly enjoy the game with all of these restrictions...

Well it's not meant for everyone. Keep that in mind.

And I initially found out the lava bucket method by preventing myself from crafting swords. I figured lava does a ton of damage to me when I touch it, why not use it against mobs? It turned out to be a lot more fun than swinging a sword a hundred times. Can't just run up on zombies and skeletons.

I'm currently following the limitations and having fun. Not really looking at victory conditions since I only play singleplayer, though.

How hard can vanilla Minecraft get, without being suicidal? And how long can you sustain it? If it can be sustained indefinitely, how else can you limit yourself to make it difficult?

If you do not like challenges then this thread is not for you. This thread is about limiting yourself as much as possible.

I initially posted in another thread but figured to make my own. The original idea was to find out the most efficient methods to play the game and then limit your gameplay by removing what you could. One good example, and my favorite thing to do in this game, is to use a lava bucket to kill all entities but remove the lava before it can destroy loot. This cooks steak for you, for example. Although you can't block, it does considerable damage and saves time and resources.

    List of Limitations:

    1. Cannot enchant items, craft potions, use enchanted items, or use drinks. This means you cannot drink Milk Buckets to remove status effects, use enchanted items dropped by enemies, and so on.

    2. Cannot wear armor of any type. Any gear that provides benefit in any fashion is off limits.

    3. Cannot kill entities (villagers, animals, mobs, etc.) unless you are getting crafting materials and you cannot use the food they drop. This means no porkchops, steaks, chicken, and so on. Exceptions include carrots and potatoes, as their drop rates are low and they must be grown in order to really provide a food source.

    4. Cannot use Bone Meal to hurry the growth of anything except melon stems. You can still use Bone Meal to grow grass to obtain seeds. This means mushrooms cannot be grown into huge mushrooms.

    5. Crops must be kept above ground and farms must be realistic. So you cannot have dirt or stone walls around them, limiting you to fencing. Torches and glowstone also cannot be used to allow crops to grow during nighttime.

    6. Only glowstone may be used as a light-source. This is because they do not give a full return when broken, so you must be very careful with how you use them. Torches, and all other light sources, are off-limits.

    7. Brightness setting in Minecraft must be "moody" or lower (if lower settings are ever implemented), but screen brightness may be altered provided it is not set to max.

    8. No ender chests, as it allows you to store and access items anywhere in the world and at anytime. Chests can be used.

    9. No gameplay altering mods, even if they make the game harder. The point is to keep limiting yourself until you eventually die. Texture mods are totally fine.

    10. Bows, snowballs, and lava buckets cannot be used for combat. This limits you to swords, tools, or punching. As previously stated, I personally like and prefer the lava bucket.

    11. Cannot use water to put out fire, break falls, stop or slow enemies, climb hills or other terrain, and so on. This applies to both naturally generated water and water placed by you or friends.

    12. Cannot use mounts, leads, carrots on sticks, minecarts, and so on. This applies to you and objects, so no minecarts with TNT.

    13. Cannot tame, breed, or store any entity. You must find them out in the wild. This means you cannot carry and use eggs to generate chickens, wait for them to grow, and then get feathers. You also cannot hide villagers in multiplayer.

    14. Cannot use fishing rods.

    15. Cannot craft any golden food (both types of golden apples and the golden carrot).

    16. Food must be consumed immediately after being crafted or cooked. This means you cannot cook potatoes unless you are going to eat them right after.

    17. Mooshrooms cannot be used for food.

    18. If playing multiplayer, you cannot work with other players. You must either kill them honorably or run from them. Honorably refers to using swords or punching. Gravel, lava buckets, and other "cheap" methods are off-limits. If you play multiplayer you may decide if you play hardcore or not.

    19. Cannot craft, have, or use compasses, clocks, maps, books, paper, ender pearls, or eyes of ender.

    20. Cannot alter villages. This means you can't loot chests, take crafting tables or furnaces, wood, or crops from villages. If you are in multiplayer, you may kill villagers to prevent other players from amassing emerald to win via option #2. Keep in mind limitation #12 and #13, you must leave villagers alone and find them naturally.

    21. Cannot make the Nether Portal unless you have mined and manually place obsidian blocks. This means you cannot use the lava/water bucket method to create it.

    22. Cannot use blocks against players. You're free to use blocks to build towers to escape zombies and such, but you cannot use blocks to hinder the movement of players. This means you can wall off a tunnel to stop a player from running (since it's far away from them) but cannot place blocks to suddenly stop them, switch to a sword, and kill them.

    List of Victory Conditions:

    1. Finding the end portal. This is because you do not have ender pearls to show you the direction nor when to move down.

    2. Building a Beacon that is placed atop a full pyramid made exclusively of emerald and powered by an emerald. In multiplayer, any part of a beacon pyramid (blocks underneath and the beacon itself) cannot be altered by anyone except the person who placed it. However, you can still go and slay the player while they're building it.

    3. Standing on an untouched block over a large lake of lava and then killing a Ghast by punching (nothing equipped in the hand) a fireball back at it. This means a single miss will result in your death (hence the standalone block over lava) or in instant victory (due to killing a Ghast under such circumstances). The only other limiting factor is that you may attempt to hit each fireball only ONCE. You must time your punches perfectly. As such, this will be harder to accomplish on multiplayer due to latency and desync than singleplayer.

    4. Killing a player with TNT.

    5. Making a player fall to their death.

    6. Slaying the Wither.

    7. Causing another player to be killed by a Wither that you spawned before it kills you.

    8. Unlocking the "On a Rail" achievement. Yes, you can use two powered rails, four regular rails, and two redstone torches or make a rail 1,000 blocks long. And yes, players may destroy any rail placed down.

    9. Slay each other player at least once. You may craft and use maps in order to accomplish this, or to know when players are coming for you while you attempt a different victory condition.

    10. Finding a Mushroom Island biome.

    11. Sleeping in a bed for the greater part of a night without any players or mobs slaying you.

posted a message on Ultra HC Survival Suggestions

Well, I don't know about punching only. That's so hard you'll never beat the ender dragon and skeletons would be a huge problem.

    But here's my list:

    1. Cannot kill entities (villagers, animals, mobs, etc) except for crafting materials. So no food from cows, but leather is a go. Exceptions include potatoes and carrots, as drop rates are low and they don't provide much food without growing fields at a time and smelting potatoes.

    2. Cannot enchant items or craft potions, in any way or for any purpose.

    2. Cannot wear armor of any type. Must rely on blocking to mitigate damage.

    4. Cannot use Bone Meal to hurry crop growth. So you must naturally wait for crops to grow. Only exception are melon stems, as melons don't instantly grow from applying BM to them. This means you cannot suddenly grow a huge mushroom from a single mushroom and give yourself a ton of food.

    5. Crops must be kept above ground and must look natural. So no dirt/stone walls around them and you have to use fencing. This also means that you can't purposefully put torches around them to keep them growing at night.

    6. Brightness setting must be set to "moody" or lower. Screen brightness cannot be set to brightest to compensate, but can be altered. Torches cannot be used, but glowstone can. This is because glowstone breaks into only part of what it takes to make a single block, so it must be used sparingly.

    7. No ender chests, as this allows you to store items that can be accessed anywhere and at anytime provided you have the material to make them. Chests can be used.

    8. No gameplay altering mods. So TMI cannot be used but texture mods can be used. Not even mods that supposedly make the game harder.

    9. Bows and lava buckets cannot be used for combat. So only swords, other tools, or punching may be used for combat. I personally like the lava bucket idea since I'm well practiced and can kill mobs without destroying loot when they die, and it automatically cooks meat to save you the time and resources of smelting food.

    10. Cannot use water to put out fire, break falls, stop or slow enemies, climb hills or other terrain, even if the water is naturally generated.

    11. Cannot use mounts or leads.

    12. Cannot tame animals. I once found the most overpowered method to kill mobs is to get a pack of wolves to follow you. I started with ~4 wolves and eventually had a pack of ~30. I never crafted a weapon in that game with my friend and he never got close to killing me even with enchanted gear and weapons. One hit, I hide, and he was dead.

    13. Cannot breed or capture animals. So you must find chickens naturally to get feathers to craft arrows, rabbits and cows for leather, and sheep for wool.

    14. Cannot use fishing rods. This is a powerful source of food and has a chance of replenishing the tool used by offering string and sticks. No, it's not likely to get these things, but it is still powerful.

    15. You cannot craft either kind of golden apples or golden carrots.

    16. When food is crafted or cooked, it must be eaten. So you cannot craft bread unless you intend to eat it immediately.

    17. You cannot use Mooshrooms for food. So you cannot kill them or use bowls to get free mushroom soup.

    18. You cannot use Milk Buckets to remove status effects.

There are a few more I'm still thinking of.

But are there any differences in what you can do?

posted a message on TMI versus NEI
I've been using TMI for a few years now and just now heard of NEI. I had never heard of it and when I did the people mentioning it said it was better.

The only differences I can tell is that TMI is a very easy to install mod that has a clean and straightforward setup, whereas NEI seems to be clunky and takes up the entire screen. Looking at things like enchantment, TMI seems a lot easier in just about every aspect.

    Is there anything I'm missing?

You can access the Ender Chest inventory from anywhere, at any time?

    1. How long, on average, does it take an oak sapling to grow?

    2. What are the rough chances of an oak sapling growing into a large oak tree?

    3. Placing grass or slabs around the sapling didn't seem to change anything. Out of about 25 tries I didn't get a large tree. But putting a full block and then a slab caused the next 25 to yield only large versions. It also took no less than ten bonemeal to get a tree when using a full block and then a slab.

Mushroom soup is the best in the Nether. There they are the only real source of good food. I always bring a bowl when I go there.

It's not. If you go in there and use mushrooms, you spawned in a mushroom biome. If that were the case, you should have a mooshroom on the other side of the portal and plenty of stews present in your inventory.
