posted a message on Minecraft SMP OVERHAUL! [NEW PICTURES] [UPDATE 7] [HOLY COW]
    Quote from RiotMaster51 »
I see what you are trying to do, but there are a few problems. Minecraft multiplayer simply wouldnt work like on XBOX live, or the PS3. Unlike with specialized game consoles, which are pretty much standardized, PCs come with different software and hardware. Not everyone will be able to run a server. There would be some serious locks, that prevent the creation of a server if the user doesn't have a minimum RAM, storage, and other basics. The list of servers you mentioned would be highly unlikely to work. The servers would lose a lot that makes them unique, being on completely different systems.

    This.
Minecraft isn't Gears of War - it needs the current system, you can't have people hosting servers out of their browser at the click of a button.

It's a programming nightmare, and you'd have every little boy or girl trying to run servers, making a terrible job out of it. The quality of servers would degrade rapidly.
Imagine two million people hosting their own server, not even knowing how to do it right?

Some things should remain more complex; being able to create and host a server is one of them. I know many of the kids here think they'd be fantastic at hosting servers, but the sad truth is that most of them wouldn't have a clue what to do.

I'm sorry, but I don't think you realise how flawed this system would be if it were to be implemented. It boggles the mind of a programmer, and goes against common sense too.

Seriously, what the hell dude? You didn't credit Fool.
    Look at these.

    http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/49328.htm
    http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/36838.htm

The paintings are ripped from these pieces by Fool.
Did you ask him? No, you did not. Did you even credit him? No, you did not. Did you use them? YES.

Do the world a favour and credit Fool.

    http://www.foolstown.com/

Where is the justice when the best pixel artist in the world does not get credited, when his pieces are shamelessly ripped and hammered into a random conglomerate of pixel art?

Ahh, this makes me sad. So sad indeed.

Am I missing something, or did you not credit Fool and his brilliant pixel art, for some of the paintings?
I swear to God, you better credit that guy, he's my pixel idol.

I just don't want to die--I have that OCD thing where I just can't lose all my stuff.

Don't throw around names of disorders randomly like that, it doesn't sound like you have OCD at all. I don't like to lose my items either, doesn't mean I have OCD.
A whole lot of kids these days think having a disorder is cool and makes them special. It does not, and kids - you don't need to tell everybody you meet.

That aside, wear some armour and get a decent sword. The best way to learn is practice, you won't know the right rhythm required to fight spiders, unless you get some first-hand experience in getting your ass kicked eight ways.

Because minecraft just isn't newby-unfriendly and complicated enough.

    NO.

It's entirely unnecessary, adds unnecessary JUNK, and this is a game where you get resources by punching them, it is NOT REALISTIC. Titanium? Helium? Lead? WHAT CRAP IS THIS?

    someones a dumbass irl

No need to get personal. He has a completely valid point. The fact that he says these hyper-realistic resources have no place does not make him a "dumbass".

I think he's right. I've said this from the start, we don't need lots and lots of barely different resources.
Consider how many blocks there are to start with. Each one has a clearly defined purpose, and differs greatly from the last one.
Introducing metals that are largely the same as previous ones, and altering the way common resources (coal) works, will just confuse people.
OP says that we should have a "frost stone" and a "pule stone", which personally I think is bizarre and gimicky. It would turn Minecraft into something that looks and feels like a failed MMORPG.
But then he says we should have oil and chalk and marble, things that only serve to complicate the game, not give it depth.

I think people confuse depth with complexity. By adding tons more blocks, they think they're adding depth. No, just more complexity.
And since when can oil "harden" into a block? You can't go swimming in the sea, and find a solid cube of oil just sitting there. That's ridiculous. Mining oil would have to have different mechanics altogether.
You need an oil rig to retrieve oil from the sea. You can't scoop it up from nowhere with your hands.
Plus, oil would make the game too modern. It has the perfect balance of fantasy-realistic at the moment. All of your ideas are too fantasy or too realistic, and most of them are fluff anyway.

I'm sorry, but I think most (if not all) of your ideas aren't suited to Minecraft, and I don't think they would work at all. To be honest I think you're looking for another Runescape-esque game, and Minecraft isn't that.

By the way, "troll" isn't a general insult. Don't call anyone who disagrees with you a "troll", because it's not true and frankly it makes you look childish. Learn to accept criticism, you're not always right.

Original post hasn't been edited. He said he was being sarcastic at the bottom.

I agree with the op - new content is great, and while I can't play SMP (bug), I don't care if it gets updated or not.
Singleplayer is getting lots more things, so I'm thrilled.

Personally I thought the video was enchanting and beautiful, and I'm more than happy at the rich worlds we'll be able to explore with the next update.

    This.
I'm not usually one for saying things like this, but if the OP wants "vast swathes of frozen wasteland" he should log in to World of Warcraft instead. I am so freaking mad at the OP, he seems to want 100% completed biomes right at Halloween, just totally done and perfect straight away.
Don't whine and moan! This game will progress - Notch will tweak it to perfection in time.

I hate people like the OP who want everything handed to them on a silver platter. Notch releases features gradually, and perfects them in time. It's not going to be some epic dungeons and dragons RPG on the first release of a new feature.

Another reason: You can save yourself if you are BURNED by a Ghast or lava. :biggrin.gif:

    and you can farm obsidian.
And you can build a moat.
    etc etc

it will definitely be important, but i doubt fire spreads on hellstone.

Is that the technical term for it or is it called Brimstone instead?

    just curious

Brimstone is an archaic word for Sulphur, and the brick you're talking about is not Sulphur.
    So, no, it is not.

    Image of Sulphur.

Strangely enough, I considered saying that fish may count as a new block, before you posted, but decided not to. They would probably be a new mob, because they occupy a water space, they aren't that space exactly.

Why would we need different blocks for biomes? The only possible thing I could think of is perhaps a different type of tree for rainforests, but I'm pretty sure that's it.

Perhaps some red earthy ground for deserts, or coral for the water.

It may just be that all the new blocks are for Hell, but there are a lot of new biomes, so you never know.

Oops, my mistake. I'm from the U.K, I should know better than to call it sulfur.

posted a message on Six New Blocks
    So, I quote Notch:
    Quote from Notch »
There are six new block types (five of them have unique abilities)

So, let's take a look at the Hell blocks we can see, eh?

First off is that Bloody Cobblestone. Perhaps this is the type without any unique ability.

It appears to be a reddened Mossy Cobblestone, with the moss changed to blood, or perhaps it is some sort of red rock. A good fit for the new hell theme, anyway.

Secondly, we have this glowing rock. I suspect it may be Sulphur (I really hope so), but maybe it's a totally new one.

I wonder what it'll be used for, and what it does. It may be the new material required for lanterns - it glows constantly, after all.

Thirdly, we have the portal entrance/exit. I am not sure if this counts as a block or not, but it appears inside the obsidian frame, and presumably walking through it teleports you to hell. This sounds like a "unique ability" to me, so I wouldn't discount it being a block just yet.

Fourthly, we have this strange hellish dirt (thanks AM18 for the pic).
It looks like screaming faces, but also a lot like granite, so it could be our over-active imaginations making us think we see faces.

    Comparison with granite:

    Who knows!

Now, my main point: What about the other 2, or 3 new blocks? I've not seen anything else in screenshots, so perhaps the new blocks are back on the normal world, in the form of biome-related blocks.
That, or Notch hadn't added the new blocks when the screenshots of Hell were taken.
Feel free to discuss the blocks, post theories on new ones, or whatever here.

posted a message on POLL: Should HP be biggest concern in the update?
Some people can't even connect to SMP, myself being one of those people.
I couldn't care less about health in SMP, at least until the bugs are fixed (java socket exception and so on).
Single Player is where it's at for me - and HP would cause a load of complications, and undoubtedly more complaints.

Hmm. I am pretty interested in Hell. I don't care for the aesthetics or building in the dimension itself, but I definitely am interested in the 6 new blocks and what I can do with them, perhaps we will get some interesting drops from the new mobs as well. Fast travel is also nice, though I'm more interested in building and forming the landscape rather than just exploring/spelunking/fighting so I like to build and see roads/bridges and mine cart transportation networks.

You've summed up my views too, here.
I am also eagerly awaiting biomes, and fishing.

posted a message on State-of-the-art Ghast containment and study/battle facility
Ahh, but I think Ghasts can destroy blocks with fireballs, so one could blast its way out of your containment area within a matter of minutes if it wanted to.
And then, your world descends into chaos, as more Ghasts spawn, destroying your base, and fleeing to the world above. The landscape is destroyed, filled with craters and pockmarks.
