I've been concentrating on my "modern home in a mountain", created in 1.9 pre-release 5. After doing a home embedded in a mountain (Alpha 1.2 - present), I'd doing a more modern version with a modern home. Currently I am on the hunt for Lapis Lazuli, so I can finish the bathroom walls:
Once I finish the walls I can add the shower, sink, toiler and shower. Went branch mining and my first branch ran into a ravine! Ended in disaster though as I followed a path around and removed a column of gravel that was in my way and lava poured through the hole onto my head. So was set back a while. Also dug into my upstairs hallway and will be creating an enchantment room from this new area:

Looks great so far, i'm not very good at making modern looking houses. I always run out of lapis when im building.
All i've done today was collect 12 ender eyes and collect some blaze rods.
Was out hunting enderpearls saw an enderman started to stare at him so he'd come to me then a creeper snuck up on me and blew up enderman warped behind me and started attacking managed to kill him with only one heart left then got shot in the back by a skeleton.
There are some principles that I'd like to share that might help the beginner. No matter how well you build a shelter, you will eventually have to fight a mob. Winning is all about using your head. First, some general principles:

It's not symmetrical. D: So how many chickens are you gonna have in it? Also why don't you use f1 to hide the item and health bar when you take the screenshot?

I always have bad luck with wolves, every time i'd get hit and try attacking the monster my wolves would warp in front of my sword.

Zombies for food, skeletons for arrows creepers to make tnt and ghasts for regen potions.

Not sure what you could do with the house maybe a giant silverfish? Also like the barn although it looks like you ran out of space for the cactus.
