I should really post on this topic more then once a month. Anyways I've managed to mostly finish up the roof and started on the floor.
Currently I'm deciding what color glass to use on the floor.I think the red or white would look better with the floor but black would be easier to see through. I'm going to try out orange and yellow later to see how they look.
This thread makes Strength seem very overpowered, and it is; why not instead add a fixed amount of extra damage?
The only thing I can think of is that they balanced strength for pvp but not for normal survival, you're able to kill someone quickly with it even if they have full diamond armor with protection IV.
As for the part about the Wiki misreporting the effect of critical hits, I suspect they never updated from what it was like before 1.6.2, which modified damage levels; for example, weapons add their damage to your unarmed damage, making them do one more damage than before (in the case of zombies in particular a diamond sword needs one less hit to kill). Similarly, enchantments like Sharpness used to have a large random factor in the damage added and were able to deal more damage at the high end; the Wiki still claims in their trivia for swords that a Sharpness V diamond sword can kill most mobs in one critical hit.
That makes sense, although I wonder what made them decide to change it.
Also, it'd be interesting to see how arrow damage varies, since the Wiki claims that a Power V bow should do 12.5 hearts of damage in a fully charged shot, yet it often fails to one-hit 20 HP mobs (in fact, even with Flame they can survive until the fire extinguishes). That said, arrow damage appears to depend on velocity (fire an arrow into a block overhead and mine it, which does minimal damage).
I actually tried to do some tests with it but it's a pain to do since damage done with the bow wasn't added to my stats, so I had to log onto two of my accounts shoot my other character then switch to the other minecraft window and go into stats to see how much damage I took. If I remember right I would take anywhere from 13 damage (6 and a half hearts) up to being 1 hit killed.
Excellent analysis. I decided to dig into the code (for 1.7.9), and it seems like your post is almost entirely correct. The one difference is in the base attack damage, which I'll get to in a moment.
Each entity has a base value for the attack damage. For a player it's 1, a Zombie is 3, and so on. Mobs sometimes have additional bonuses, although not for attack strength it looks like.
Then the sword adds a fixed-value bonus to this: 4 for wooden or gold, 5 for stone, 6 for iron, and 7 for diamond. Combining these two gives the 5 for wooden/gold, 6 for stone, 7 for iron, or 8 for diamond that you used and the wiki showed.
I actually knew this part but I thought it wasn't important enough to mention, I figured since it was added together before the other calculations that it would be easier for me to just add them together and just say that the swords did that much rather then having to make a section explaining it.
There are three types of stat bonuses: bonuses that add a fixed value, percentage bonuses that don't stack (i.e. they only add/subtract a percentage of the base+fixed bonuses), and percentage bonuses that do stack (i.e. they apply to other percentage bonuses too, including non-stacking ones).
The potion of weakness is actually coded as a fixed-value bonus, so it subtracts .5 damage per level instead of reducing damage by 50% like the wiki says. The potion of strength is coded as a stacking percentage, as you observed.
Interesting about the weakness potions, I didn't actually try them out at all during my tests. (Forgot that they even existed)
Then criticals are applied as increasing damage by 50%, as you observed. And then bonuses from enchantments are applied, again as you observed.
And, as you observed, health is sorted as a floating-point value now rather than an integer so the game will accurately keep track of fractional damage rather than rounding.
Please do fix the wiki, that's the point of it being a wiki. Your forum account allows you to log in there too.
I just didn't want to change the wiki without making sure there were no mistakes that I made during my tests. (Along with the fact that I have no idea how to properly edit things on it.)
A couple of days ago I was messing around on my survival world with my new enchanted diamond sword and some strength potions, after a while of messing around I realized that I was able to kill endermen in 1 hit. Since I didn't know that this was possible to do I decided to see what made it so I did so much damage.
The first thing I thought it might be was the sharpness enchantment, but it only adds 1.25 damage per level which means the sharpness V would add 6.25 to the diamonds swords 8 damage for a total 14.25 damage per swing, not even enough to kill a spider in one hit, no where even close to 1 hit killing an enderman.
So the next thing I checked was the strength potions and saw that a level 2 strength potion gives a 260% damage increase.
While some of you might not think that it's a lot when you look closer it gives a massive damage boost. For example a wooden sword has a base attack of 5 damage the 260% boost from a level 2 strength potion would add an additional 13 points of damage to the wooden swords 5 for a total of 18 damage, nearly 4 more points of damage than a sharpness V diamond sword.
When you compare what sharpness adds compared to strength it seems completely useless. And if you add in critical hits with the strength potions it just makes sharpness look worse than it already does. But before we add the critical hits I want to point out some information on the wiki that seems incorrect about them.
I also noticed that the information on the wiki about critical hits doesn't seem to be true anymore. It says that a critical hit will do a random amount of additional damage up to 50% more (rounded down) plus one heart.
From some tests that I've done I've found that critical hits don't do a random amount of damage, it always adds 50% damage to your attack. After finding out that that part of the info was wrong I decided to test out whether critical hits added a heart worth of damage after adding the 50%.
I tried it out with a stone sword. According to the wiki a stone sword with a critical should do a total of 10 damage (6 for the stone sword 3 for the critical hits 50% bonus and 1 added on as the added heart of damage at the end.) But every time I tested it I only did 9 damage, it only did the stones swords damage plus the 50% bonus from doing a critical hit.
Next I decided to see if it rounded down the damage if it wasn't a full point worth of damage. I tested this out with a wooden sword, if the wiki was correct the wooden sword should do 5 damage from the sword + 2.5 damage from the critical hit and be rounded down to 7 damage. But when I tested it every time I used the sword and checked the my statistics the total damage that I've done went up by 7.5 damage, which meant that the stats didn't round it down.
My first thought was that maybe it just says that I'm doing 7.5 damage but the monsters are only taking 7 damage, so I decided to do some tests on monsters. I figured I would try it out on a skeleton since they have 20 health, I decided to do 2 critical hits and a normal hit on it.If the damage was rounded down I would only do 7 damage for each critical and 5 damage for the normal hit for a total of 19 damage which would mean that the skeleton would still be alive. When I tested it though the skeleton died every time which meant that the damage wasn't being rounded down, it also means that monsters keep track of damage done to them even if it's less than half a heart of damage.
Now that we have the explanation about critical hits finished let's add their boost to the strength potion bonus. We'll use a wooden sword again, the wooden sword has 5 base damage add on 13 because of the strength potion and you have 18, next you take the 18 damage and add another 50% because of the critical hit which puts you up to 27 damage total. That's enough damage to kill most of the mobs in the game, the things that it can't 1 hit kill are endermen, large magma cubes (because of the armor),iron golems, horses with very high health, and the two bosses.
Now at this point you might be thinking that with sharpness V on your diamond sword you would do the 14.25 damage plus 260% from strength (37.05) and the 50% from criticals (25.65) for a total of 76.95 damage but you'd be wrong. Things like sharpness, smite and bane of arthropods are added on at the end after all of the calculations, so instead you would do 8 from the sword + 20.8 from strength +14.4 from critical for a total of 43.2 damage before adding sharpness on. (Enough to 1 hit kill any normal mob other than iron golems and the two bosses. If you add the bonus from sharpness V to that you do 49.45 damage, which doesn't change much you still 1 hit kill everything except the threes things previously listed.
It doesn't even make it take less hits to kill and iron golem, takes 3 hits whether or not you have sharpness on the sword. It might help a little on the wither, but not much. It takes 12 normal hits with an unenchanted sword to kill the wither vs the 10 of a sharpness V sword, or 9 critical hits with a normal sword vs the 8 of the sharpness V sword.
Sorry about how unorganized the post is, I made it while I was testing out all of these things. If I made any mistakes somewhere please tell me about it so that I can fix it. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll try to explain it the best that I can.
When I start a world first thing I do is work on getting diamonds and an enchanting table, then I work on a large project that ends up taking a couple of months to finish.
You don't need to use right click for it, just go into the minecraft options under controls and change it so you use a keyboard button instead of a mouse.
Go kill the Wither on hardcore in an open field of battle and get back to us.
While I've never bothered with doing hardcore mode I don't see why it would be considered hard to do. On one of my old worlds I killed the wither on hard difficulty without using any armor, if you use any armor the wither just becomes very easy to kill.
dude the wither has 300 hearts (150) 2 armor points and will kill anything in sight even other withers the wither is copletelty random
the enderdragon was hella easy i took him on with prot 1 dia armor power 4 bow sharp 3,fire asp 2, kno2, dia sword and i notch apple a stack of sand and a shovel/ pick.
i took on the wither in a cave and with about the same gear and i died
The wither is actually very easy if you know what you're doing, I actually made a guide for how to kill it without using any armor when the wither first came out, although it might be somewhat outdated by now.
It can have 1,000 hearts, but the fact that matters is it would still be a gear check, not something that is actually hard. Don't have a good enough setup, you won't kill it. Have a good set up, it won't kill you.
To be honest the wither isn't all that much of a gear check, the only things you need to have a good chance of killing it is a smite IV diamond sword and a power IV bow. It's even possible to do it with an unenchanted bow but it becomes annoying to do, the time that I did it it took around 4 minutes to get it down to half health and if you make even one mistake during that whole time you end up dying. Although as far as I know it's not possible to kill it with an unenchanted sword.
Did some work on the building, mostly finished with the roof now. Made a couple of changes to the water, added some small towers near the ends of the building and made a couple more obsidian pillars.
I've also been digging a hole inside of the building that way it's ready for when I start working on the floor.
And here's some pictures of how the water looks from the inside. It will change some more once I start working on building the inside of the building.
And I also mined more nether quartz for experience and enchanted diamond tools until I ran out of diamonds. Going to combine some of the picks to get efficiency V since my old ones are to expensive to repair now. The top half are the new tools and the bottom rows are my old ones.
Cured a zombie villager and sold all of my rotten flesh to it for experience, then used the emeralds to buy 12 stacks of glowstone for more experience. Then I went and got some more nether quartz for some more experience. Then I went to the end to 1 hit kill endermen for even more experience. Managed to enchant about half of the tools I wanted to so far.
I don't really use anything to mark the way, I mostly just use my memory to find my way there. Never really had to the need to use anything to help me find the way.
Sorted my chest area some, moved all of the dirt and cobblestone to a different area where I had some stored. I also mined up around 30,000 cobblestone today along with around 12,000 dirt. Here's a what my storage area looked like before I organized it and after I did. Along with my stone and dirt storage area.
And here's my current stats, although they did get reset sometime a while back.

Now I just need to repair all of my efficiency V unbreaking III diamond pickaxes. Here's how many I have to repair along with my worlds current stats.
