As for the pit idea, why not have several larger pits. As they fill with mobs, use an invisibility poition to enter the pits and name tag the creepers without them detecting you. Over time you will get the other mobs despawn but the creepers will not. Obviously you'll need quite a few tags, but once you get one a CC in one of the pits, wiat for a skeleton to spawn in it, kill any other mobs so you only have the skelly and the CC and effect the detonation...
If I'm not digging small pits, why do I need pits at all? Maybe I should just fence off a big field, name tag all the creepers in the field, and kill the other monsters. Eventually I should have so many creepers that all monsters stop spawning.

If using a 2 block wide tunnel (the entrance is 2 blocks wide i believe?), you could run your tunnel up to the entrance, but remove the water just between the entrance and the edge of the monument (use signs or something to hold the water back) like my sketch below.
Hex's U bend idea (
) would also work, Guardians only spawn inside the bounding area of the Monument itself which does not include the pillars it often generates on. Obvs, guardians do appear in these areas but that is because they have usually drifted down from above or swum in from elsewhere.

I acquired my first Zombie / Skeleton and Creeper skulls pre-tridents and channeling, but as you probably surmise, gettting a charged creeper is tricky. I got mine from a large area i flattened with an observation tower in the middle and most of the underground area lit up so i got a lot of surface spawns, and when a thunderstorm happened I raced to the tower to monitor the area. But it took ages to get my first charged creeper.

Isn't there a setting where you can get the game to put a rolling display on the screen with things like "Chest Opens" or "Zombie Groans" as things happen? Could this tell you what is happening?

Looks very good, reminded me a bit of my design below from a few years ago, I wish i had thought to use a 2D image of the Guardian on the walls of the perimeter....#

MC Day 17153 (PC SP Win 10 Java Ver 1.13.2)
Recorded my 26th death today in my world, and my first for sometime. During a recent thunderstorm, I grabbed my trusty Channelling Trident to get some skulls for my skull collection - I’ve been getting the charged creepers I create to explode in the water area which covers my Villager Trading Hall. However, on one occasion I was hit into the air by a skeleton arrow just as the creeper went off and seems that was enough to kill me. Managed to recover my gear but not before I saw a zombie wearing my diamond pants and a creeper skull on his head …
I also added a couple of water elevators to the outpost, and was surprised to see when from a distance that some squid had spawned in one and were being catapulted out before dropping back in …. when I got close to the elevator they didn’t leap out, but they were in the water, not sure why from a distance it shows them being fired out like a squid cannonball …

I like firing at Ghasts at long range; think its helped my distance judgement with a bow. Its quite satisfying watching a ghast disappear out of visual range as one of my arrows arcs towards it and kills it "off screen" as it were. The only frustration is when they are distant and you have to fire where you think they will go, but of course they change direction just after you've fired and you miss.
If i'm pillaring up quite high to mine glowstone in the roof, that can be quite a bit nervy when you suddently hear the fireball launch sound, but i usually just pillar straight down automatically now as the fireball will undoubtably be aimed where I was, and will miss. Using netherrack for pillars and an efficiency pickaxe usually means you can pillar down quite quickly.
The only thing i really notice is that sometimes Ghasts very high up above me that suddenly descend can't seem to see me when they are mostly above you. I had one not long ago that just drifted down til it was almost atop me I was able to jump up and hit it with my sword

Did you feel a bit .... sheepish?

This sounds like an old bug where an Enderman is attacked around dawn and becomes aggressive for a short while, before becoming passive, but somehow becomes attached to you. The thread below details an experience of this, i have had it a few times now, as i recall the Enderman will teleport near you if you move away, and if you look at him he will not attack, but if you get too close he will also teleport away. I think he will only become aggressive again if you log out the game and reload.

My base in the Nether has a portal in it that goes direct to an Overworld outpost i'm working on which will contain farms i cant build in the nether, So i'm always just a portal jump away from resources.
