I must say I enjoy your thread :-) the builds may not be stellar but your love for the game really shines through! And that matters more. The soul.

Keeping at a project for that long really carries its own reward, your dedication should be applauded :)

    BTW, love that swimming pool.

    Well played

Hi. I don't really worry that much about space issues no longer. I spoke some with Ben and the placing of the wall seems well thought out. Also, the builds will go in the third dimension as well. Layered city for effect ;) Large builds doesn't really necessitate a large footprint. The fact that we're making a world eventually really soothes my unquenching desire to build, this project is but started ey?

As for boundaries I definitely favour the organic approach. The terrain is sufficient methinks. Plus, the poor areas are well walled up already, any food riots should easily be contained ;) and really, our needed and meaningful border will be the city walls. Eventually I guess there will be city outside as well, but after the beta of course. A hospital for instance? As a more "social security institution" for the shallow ends of society, few if any medieval city tolerated them within its protective embrace of walls. One more thing about mediaeval medicine worthy of note was its religious connection. As in its inability to view the body and spirits as separate entities. But I will spare you any further elaboration on this ...

On another note I checked out the project at PMC, it seems to have gained some traction, diamonds and downloads. Very inspiring :) You do a fine job getting our work there Chris so have this :Gboots:

nice screens too, it surely makes me "homesick" :P

And to all, keep the blocks coming!

    Just a note on this.

Yes, the academic district is to the east of the cathedral, it merges rather fluidly with the "residential area" (working title) ATM. Style wise they share a lot of similarities and could indeed serve as a larger mega district. I do however think that the academy district proper will be rather more distinguishable once I get to resume building there.

Since I can't get online I don't reply know where the wall wound up to be, I do however assume there is some place left around the bank for more civic buildings and financial institutions. I started a larger build there, the trade commission, with towers and all. I didn't get to finish it before I left tho.

I haven't really plannedfor distinct boundaries twixt the districts I've started or initiated as I favour the dynamic/organic approach but I guess you know where I'm from regarding that ;) with that being said I will of course stop expanding now and rather densify the current districts. In lieu of that, priority numero uno should definitely be the market area, and closing the loop around the cathedral. We can then claim a proper downtown. Which in itself brings us very, very close to a beta--ready city.

And one more thing regarding hospitals. I think mediaeval hospitals usually were placed one tended the dying. Sanitary conditions and medical knowledge usually were abysmal. Leeches anyone? Health a services were usually provided by monasteries and religious do-gooders, hospitals were feared, for a reason. And that is precisely why we should build one ;) But on a more serious note. I have some thoughts on that matter too as my back stories are getting fleshed out a bit. I'll elaborate further once I get online for real again, on Skype.

On leaving rant-mode I'd like to add that I enjoy some management. I think focusing on the city itself is the naturall way to go.

I hope you leave me some space ;-)

And yes I am getting withdrawal symptoms already :P

    Must build.... Must place blocks...

Wow, gone for few days and three new members join up :) fantastic! Welcome all of you, really looking forward to your contributions. I'm currently in the outback of Norway at 71 degrees north. Internet is kind of hard to find here.. So when I actually do, this is my first stop :P

Will resume building in about a week. And Chris, your ideas for some carribeanstyle islands are great,I would love to do some swashbuckling builds on the server. As for the other cities you know my stand on the arabianesque one ;) Bring the sand and I will build your city!

Keep it up my fellow clansmen, and cya in week:)

Edit to add: Nordic is what I do best :) I will attack that one with a passion for sure :D

Time for a small update of what has been a busy week. It has been great fun on the server, lots of activity and builds have popped up all over. Our latest members have brought a lot of creativity and fun to the project :)

After finishing up the Alpha-release-district I have resumed work on what turns out to be the "Academy District" aka Schadenfreude Heights. Situated high atop steep cliffs well above the common masses. The intellectual elite sit atop their ivory towers, walloping in luxury. The area will try to realize the layered-city approach introduced by lloyd (Chris) some posts ago. The district is therefore very compact and builds are spread in all three dimensions, built into walls and each other, connected by honeycombed mountains of corridors. The district is yet to be filled with buildings in every possible nook and cranny but already the general look is there, Its great fun building like this :)

District top left, (baloons by ky :))

    lensflare for effect

The district merges nicely with the living district now and grows steadily. I will leave for a much needed holiday in a few days and won`t get on the server for a couple of weeks. I`ll try to keep up here, so keep posting screens :D

    cya around the server :)

    @lloyd/chris

Hey, thanks for trusting me enough to make an admin of me :) I`ll make sure to do my utmost to make both the Clan and our projects the best they can be. And very nice work on the interiors, you`ve really exploited that space and made an atmosphere that really fits this dark and sinister city of ours. I`ll keep feeding you with builds then ;)

Its good to see the Alpha-release out. Joining forces yesterday to finish up the area was great fun and we really get to see the fruits of teamwork.. In the end, isn`t that what a Clan is all about? :P

I downloaded the map to try it out. I died three times by falling out of the map :D So, enable flight mode at once. That is the lesson of the day. Its a nice little map yet a tiny, tiny fragment of the total city.

I`ll sign off with some screens

    The Alpha-area at night

Meanwhile, at the other end of town..

The learned men have erected an observatory, to gaze emptily into space

So yeah, time to build :)

So yeah.. I`ll be online every day this weekend from around 20.00GMT - 00.00GMT. So I`ll be ready for the clan meeting :)

Life in general keeps interfering with my building so I won`t be able to get on the server as much this coming week. Hopefully a few hrs a day tho.

See you all at the meeting I hope, I`ll be sure to be skyped up and ready to go :)

well since you asked, my two cents:

You should limit the cobblestone exclusively to the roof, not elsewhere as it blurs the lines between roof and wall. Also make sure your spruce pillars connects with the roof, that they go all the way up. The walls are very, very plain. Try adding some windows and other details, "depth" is your friend and makes buildings come alive. As for material choice? Planks are better for floors imo. Clay? Wool? very medievalish-lookish.

The structure is promising tho :) and you seem to know how to build. So surely you will improve on this, and really, that`s what MC is all about :D

    - General reply to most of the above -

I wouldn`t go as far as calling it a fail, net yet at least. Actually the lack of major roads and zoning could be used in our favor as it allows for a more “dynamic” and “organic” city development. Also we should be safe from that “pre-fabricated” look a lot of similar projects seem to end up getting. IMO we should go for that medieval feelin` and look. A city that has grown and developed over time, a city that has accreted builds and people, rich as poor. Traders and thieves and so on.. This I think would open up for more variety as to building style as well, as we can blend it all together.

I really agree with Accidentproneguys views on medieval cities in general. Being overcrowded, mainly poor, disease-ridden and densely packed places. I think this works well with the lack of roads as the situation is now. So for further development my alternate proposition to planning by doing roads, I think we could put up larger, functional buildings (such as civil building etc. That list you linked to MCdeziner was a treasure trove) And then surround them with builds according to what works at that given location. Main “official” builds as these will also dictate further aestheics.

As for the rich district, I think the main problem is its location. Its current site twixt the mines and the travelers district isn`t “natural”. One would assume the current location would see a good deal of traffic from the surrounding harbor, travelers district and mines. As such it would be better to utilize its location towards functionality. But then again, there are some nice builds here for sure, even though they don`t work optimally together and, in some ways, only serve to emphazise their respective differences.

Battle plan? As I stated earlier, I think putting up larger civil buildings would be a great start to revitalizing the city and tying it all together. I am currently sticking to the western side of the cathedral and have started working with Ben on how to connect the “living district” with the market district and make the end product even better. So far we have agreed to utilize the terrains natural features such as canals etc. The housing will mainly be lower income or poor areas with markets obviously and more. Its all still being planned ;) Hopefully we should see some more city-like development surrounding the cathedral soon. I also hope we can add some industry to the city, like places for the pleebs to work and toil.

That being said, I`d gladly help out elsewhere if called on :)

And all of this depends on my PC getting its act together.. Been having a lot of trouble whilst on the server and it keep crashing frequently and ever more regularly. Effectiveness is reduced.. Anger is ripe.. And well, it sucks really..

So yet another wall-of-text ;) hope I make some sense. And these are just ideas after all :)

Just one thing I noticed every time I get on.

When you go around, everything is different on each side of the map. What I mean is that certain people build in only certain places, which makes more of sectional suburbs. I don't mind it but would like to see more scattered about.

What does everyone else think about this?

    - Enters rant-mode -

I`ve been giving this daily thought..

And I, for one, agree totally. The city is very ecclectic atm. Esp. the eastern/western divide is profound. But then again, I may very well be one to blame for that as I`m most definitely a "certain people sticking to a certain place." ;) That being said, my certain place or rather "the living districts" is enjoying rapid growth and will probably have swollen to engulf the entire western part of the city, unless growth is checked or channelled elsewhere. As a new member I really don`t want to steamroll my way through the map, regardless of masterplans etc. But being extremely passionate about the city I find it hard ;) Anyways, the current plans for the living district calls for expansion until it connects, and merges with the "market district" SE and with the farmlands to the North. I`m using the cathedral as a point of referance in this regard. It works very well as a centrepiece, being both very, very large but also very, very aestethically pleasing ( it should be the benchmark for further builds :) ) This means that buildings are more city-like the closer they get.

I guess what I am trying to say is that harmonizing the different parts of town is very much on my to-do-list.
Further development of the market district will for instance alter my approach to the living district accordingly. It will exciting to see what Ben has planned :)

I honestly feel that the city, for now, lacks a proper downtown/CBD area and have yet to see anyone start builds towards this end. ( i see a city centre as a densely populated and primarily urban area, dominated by larger structures (4-6 stories, stone, bricks etc.) with supporting infrastructure and street grids to accomodate such a large concentration of people. Finding a "spot" for such an area could be difficult atm, Ideally such buildings will pop up surrounding the cathedral or other "similar" buildings (like perhaps a public library, courthouse other civic buildings.) I do however fear that space will be an issue and as such would heartily endorse a expansion of the harbour southwards. Not only does it look boootiful, it would also give additional space for city growth and a proper downtown :) Any builds in this, the goldilocks-zone :P , would be defining towards the rest of the city, set the standard so to say. Its hard to harmonize the music if we don`t have a master score..

Finishing off my rant I would like to heap praise on all the good work thats being done on this map. I positively love the surrounding villages, farms and features, If we can get the city, centre to the same standard its gonna rock!

I may be the only one here who wants to expand an already large map in need of builds, but i confess to having ambitions for this map. We still have plenty of time to both build and tie it all together. If there is anything I can do towards that end, please let me know.

Seems my enthusism got the better of me. A clan-meeting is definitely needed :)

Also, unless instructed otherwise I`ll keep building after the stated "plan".. Fair warning ;) I`ll be on for some hours every day this week.
