posted a message on What is Your Opinion on Using Texture Packs
I really enjoy how much texture packs add to the game. They can enhance or totally change the visual style depending on what you use. I enjoy browsing through people's texture packs just to see what is out there and what interesting things people do.

I think the main trick is making a pack that looks good from far away and up close. A lot of 64x and higher texture packs add too much detail to blocks which are often seen far away (like dirt and rocks). In these situations the game tends to render the texture as a bunch of ugly noise. But I have seen some 64x packs that get that balance right and look great. On the other side of the spectrum it gets harder to make blocks and items look good close up at lower resolution.

Also, having done a lot of mixing packs into a custom pack for myself (and tweaking textures once in a while myself) I can really appreciate the amount of hard work that goes into a good pack.

just gave this a shot after being away for a while and am living this. I usually mix and match to make my own pack but there is very little I could see wanting to change here. Well done!

posted a message on Minecraft Code Freeze In Effect
My favorite part has been watching the development to see what happens next. The transparency has been quite entertaining.

Ultimately Mojang has pretty much ignored the common definitions of "alpha", "beta" and (most likely) "release" versions of software so I'm curious to see where Minecraft goes.

posted a message on Should bows be enchantable?
I agree enchanting bows would be good.
I also agree they should have durability added. With cobwebs added to the game string is much easier to acquire.

posted a message on Natural Obsidian Formations in Nether
Well, obsidian is basically cooled off lava. Water in game just stimulates the cooling process. I think the logic that obsidian could exist in the Nether is based on the idea that where there is lava it is reasonable to expect obsidian.

The idea of natural spike formations jutting out of lava seas just seems like it would greatly enhance the dark and creepy feel of the world. Unnatural natural formations if you will.

posted a message on Natural Obsidian Formations in Nether
This is a very simple idea. Add natural formations of obsidian blocks to the Nether world generation. For example, massive obsidian spikes jutting out of seas of lava, or sticking out of netherack.

    Benefits:
-It would add diversity to the dimension by adding a new material (that isn't red).
-Obsidian already exists in the game (cutting down work needed to add this feature).
-Could make mining in Nether interesting (as players would more often dig around than through obsidian structures).
-It makes sense in that setting.

    Possible problems:
-Obsidian Structures could make navigation/mining too difficult if it is everywhere.
-Material imbalance? Could having material to make more portals in the Nether cause problems?
-figuring out the right shapes and scale of the shapes to look good/right could be tricky.

That's pretty much it. It wouldn't add more function to the Nether I admit, but it would give it more character and wouldn't be exceptionally hard to add.

looks pretty sweet! Will be interesting to see the finished product. Also, I hope we get to test the dragon before it's tweaked too much. I'd love to see just how much one would turn a world into swiss cheese if you left it going for several hours/days :biggrin.gif:

posted a message on Notch says Mountain biomes. I say, No.
If mountain biomes were to be improved I would split it into two types. The extreme mountains we get now and more realistic mountains (which I think you are asking for in OP?). I also feel like there should be snow at a certain elevation, so the peaks have snow caps.

posted a message on "Not Enough Time" say Notch and Jens
I'm not too worried for myself because I bought the alpha (meaning I get all updates forever with my purchase). But people that purchased during the "beta" version are supposed to have to pay for any additions after the November finished version release (unless that has changed). So I think this argument is pretty valid.

I could see adding the aether whatever world later as an expansion, but making the villages and other features (like bosses) functional after release and making people pay extra for that would kind of blow.
