You're talking about the south-west rule? Technically it works in all 4 directions (look at my rotary video for proof) the only difference is that you have to have the lever in a different position on two of the compass directions. With my 4-way, I have two up and two down in order to go around in a circle, but they all work in every direction!
This is the new system we're using on Monkey Mines since the introduction of Powered Rails, and the fix of the "floating minecart" bug broke our old system. We have a Pez Dispenser underground with a "drop block" powered rail booster that sends a minecart to the sloped brake (off-state powered rail) while at the same time sending the cart that's on the brake. So it's a no-wait system that allows multiple players to use the system at the same time.
Because it's SMP, we also make sure that we have a inbound and outbound track instead of a single two-way track which would cause problems with simultaneous use.

We took our Simple 3-way Intersection, used it 4 times and created a fairly compact and completely foolproof 4 way intersection or rotary/roundabout!
In this video I also discuss how to make the track foolproof for a multiplayer server for both empty and full carts! Hope it helps some other people!
NO REDSTONE WIRING NEEDED!
For those who don't want a lot of ugly and complex wiring.
(Some torches needed to keep the "always powered" rails turned on, but even then you don't need to wire anything for that!)

After a few tries of making a smaller and smaller 3-way intersection, I came up with one that occupies a 5x2x3 footprint, and only requires 2 powered rails, a lever and a stone button.
NO REDSTONE WIRING NEEDED!!
For those who don't want a lot of ugly and complex wiring.
I first tried a lot of underground wiring and complicated designing, before coming up with this, and it's so amazingly simple! The trouble we have on Monkey Mines, is that all of our rails are floating in the air so we can see the buildings as we go by, so when we suddenly needed an intersection in the air, we didn't want a whole building floating in the middle of nowhere just to hold a bunch of redstone wires!
So here's a quick tutorial on how we fixed that problem and how to make your own.

We also have a "rotary/roundabout" video that basically takes this intersection and uses it 4 times to create a multi-track 4-way intersection!
Yeah, the "Outdated Client" message is kind of poorly worded. It EITHER means "Outdated Client" (meaning the exe or .jar file that you use to actually log into a server and play on) or it means that the server that you are trying to log into (either yours or someone elses) hasn't been updated since the last update either.
If it's your server you're trying to log into, you have to download both the client minecraft.exe or minecraft.jar) and the server (minecraft_server.exe or minecraft_server.jar).
When you download the new server files, the only thing you need to replace in your server folder is the minecraft_server.exe or minecraft_server.jar file. All the other files can stay right where they are.
Once you have both the client and the server updated, you should be able to connect without the error.
Kane, how do you detect something like this? I've never had experience here, but how would I know if my server is being attacked if it ever happened? Does it show up in the server logs, or do I have to watch my internet traffic somehow? (Ok, I'll admit to being a noob to this...)
He took it out. He apologized for being wrong. No one is forcing you to keep using it. Let's all move on.
I will personally keep using it, but no one has to. I like the feature it has, and if I had needed support, i probably would have appreciated the "backdoor" as it is now called.
Anything else is just a personal attack on someones character. Let it go.
I'm going to have to agree with (I think) everyone after op. Basing an auto-kick on which skin you use is quite silly. Griefers come in all shapes and sizes (or colours, whatever), as do regular decent players.
My skin is lava with the creeper face on it. Does that mean I should get auto-kicked too?
No, it means you need to pop out of lava pools and scare other players before player damage works...
Anyone willing to tackle a new "list of helpful admin software" post to update this one and all in all the stuff that's come out since the last update here?
It's a cool idea. Just for clarification, it doesn't stop people from getting in, still anyone can log in (as themselves) and create their own password. It just stops people from posing as someone else...as long as that someone else has already logged in?
It is so Admins and Ops can't be impersonated if the name verification is broken again?
Am I understanding that right? Or is it a new kind of player whitelist/blacklist tool and I missed a step?
Megahaosguy is correct, as a PLAYER, you don't need to download anything but the Minecraft.exe (or.jar if you're not on Windows). Whoever is HOSTING the server that you're joining to play has to have the mods installed. Not every server has the same mods and not every server has ANY mods. But as a player who does not plan to host you do not need to download anything to enjoy the mods that servers do have installed.
Dammit Cedric...I was gonna say that. Yeah, when we had the super lag a few weeks ago I got right next to them and they are in fact, unlit furnaces. Which I found fascinating, but the chunk loaded before I could snap the screenie.

I'm sure the maze was built last. Otherwise how would they be able to get the cranes and excavators in and out?
