IDEA: Make a Kickstarter to fund the server hosting and anyother expenses. Have one of the higher tiers to be a world tour with the main builders. The lower tiers of donators could just have their name somewhere randomly in the map etc..

    Could be beneficial?

    Torm

We've been playing with the idea of a kickstarter but with new EULA for Minecraft, it can be a bit difficult to reward donators. We'll eventually get it all sorted out and we definitely want some more content before hand. Thank you for the suggestion though. We'll play with those ideas.

Different tastes in reality or the illusion of realism is something I can understand. I've heard different opinions on the 'splotch' method (as you call it), so I'll retract that if it's too subjective. In regards to the image that I posted contradicting some of the city-planning points I made above, the builds are based on canon basis that are not entirely historically accurate. I simply intended for it to be a better representation of what I was getting at, though I apologize if it seemed intrusive. That aside, I'm glad that you've clarified on some of my points, and I'm beginning to better see what you're aiming for.

Well, to be honest, I don't think we're going to fret about torches. We have limits within Minecraft because it simply wasn't made for this type of realism. Especially considering the sheer size of the building blocks to start. While I appreciate your attention to detail, we want to keep a nice balance between aesthetics and realism. So thank you for your reply but torches are down the list for what I want to make sure is spot on (at least to the extent of what you seem to want). Also, we will be posting interiors once we put up the architectural styles for the cultures we currently have created.

I would really like to see alpha/beta uploads off the map lets just say every two weeks for example so people can look around for theirself and dont have to wait a couple of years (because it will sound a little bit rough but its probably true people will lose interrest and stop following this project most people really dont have that much patience) i believe you will get al lot of attention on youtube (including videos from a channel owned by me and a few friends) if you do this and it wil attract a LOT of people

Don't worry, we have it under control haha. We're going to do a major update soon with all the cultures/majority of the architecture styles of the world soon and we're going to be updating the terrain screenshots section.

This project really looks like it's going places, I look forward to seeing what happens in the future!

I'm admittedly not the best builder, but I would be interested in helping with server administration and quest/mechanics scripting. Not sure what youre going to use for quests, but I do have a lot of experience with quest scripting with Citizens.

We could always use a few more hands. Go ahead and message me and we can figure things out from there

    That is most excellent.

Looking at the map, it appears strongly influenced by Earth's geography (which I believe y'all mention at one point). Is terrain going to follow similarly to Earth, with mountain ranges, rivers, etc, or will it be placed with artistic creativity?

I apologize for all the seeming interrogation, I'm just very curious about this project!

So far we are taking heavy inspiration from earth and its formations. You'll see that at the blog and the second entry. But we use that for more of a set of rules and then we be creative within those boundaries. We know how rivers work so we create a river that makes the most sense but it isn't an actual river that we recreated. So basically, we do what would actually happen or do what we think would happen

    It's 100,000 x 50,000 blocks. So I believe so

I'm also curious what exactly y'all plan to use the wind chart for. Will it be manifest in the actual map itself (tree angles, etc), or is it just for some detail outside the actual game? It's a nice touch either way, but actually factoring it into the map would be truly something.

It'll affect the climate of certain areas. Although it wasn't necessary, we do like our detail. And possibly man made structures that have to take into account of wind

Currently it's private unless you're applying to be a builder or contribute to the server but we'll be setting something public up soon, I believe. When we do I'll update the thread and message you

I would reckon that at least some of the disappointment here is simply due to the claim that this is the largest and most detailed MC project. It may well be, it's certainly one of the largest I've seen, if not the largest, but you can't determine that. You can never be 100% certain that this is the largest. I believe my city is the largest entirely handmade, mod and tool free, made almost 100% by only one person city in all Minecraft, but I won't claim that. I can't prove it, and I will never be able, so I don't make that claim.
Detailed, too. That is subjective. One person's detail is another's finicky over-the-top gaudiness. This may be the largest world project, I wouldn't be surprised if it is, but most detailed? No-one can truly state that, entirely honestly.

I believe there will be negativity based on these claims, but I don't mean to put a downer on this project, not at all. I like the way it's going, as I too try to put natural, rather obsessive detail into aspects of my builds. The village that looks to be on the side of a hill in a forested valley? Perfect placement. Just from that one shot, that settlement would have a fantastic atmosphere just from being in such a location. The open fields too, don't often see a look like that, and it's one I like. I'm also a big fan of the dusty, sandy, plains-with-trees area. It's not something I had before considered might look good, but it's been done in such a way that just simply works. Rather a Great Plains vibe. Just add feral horses and it's right there.

So, good luck, and keep it up. I really like what you've got going here (though more screenshots would always be nice). I would just say, be careful what you claim, else you'll get disappointment aplenty.

Haha we'll be sure to work on our wording but from our research, we've found this to be the largest. I'll add a disclaimer saying from what we know and we'll work on the wording a bit. But thank you so much for criticism and we will be updating this thread a bit more often with new screenshots. I hope you enjoy!

I remember seeing this yesterday, then today saw that y'all were on a Kotaku article. Nice.

I'm really impressed not by the building, but the dedication. This has been in progress for... a long, long time. That's the true hallmark of this project! Good luck to y'all, I'll be watching.

EDIT: I'd also love a tour at some point (which I hope y'all have some willingness to do). Will check back with y'all in a few weeks when I have internet that can support a multiplayer connection to, well, anything.

Beautifully done! I just love the detail, and I am partial to the John Smith pack as well. (It just doesnt work in FTB as well as it does in Vanilla, but non the less) Is the server going to have the JSL as the main pack? Or is it something people will have to download and install themselves? I would also suggest, if you are going to have multiple area's, Maybe have world teleports? (Cant remember the mod) You could break down the server world into several others to make each map smaller in size. It will be a bit hard to find a server cheap enough unless you have your own for a map that size. Also, what is the capacity you are thinking? Minimal Spec requirements for the players? Take in mind that people with moderate computers will not beable to run this on full FPS, especially with the JSL pack. Sorry for dropping questions like this. May be to soon, so if so let me know :P

    Pluto~

We are going to have separate worlds for specific continents to make it a bit easier to run but as for those questions, I can't really answer them. I'm not as well versed in that stuff as others.

I understand completely, we're in a transitional period with the server owner moving and life getting in the way we haven't been able to get the server up and take a whole bunch of pictures of the actual world. But the server is now up again so we'll update and hope you enjoy it then. -in response to peachlicious

"Aerna; A fantasy world building project with a vast array of cultures, architecture styles, lore, and detail."

Welcome! Here is a simple snippet of the creation process of currently one of the largest world-building servers to ever exist in Minecraft. This server's end goal will be a fantasy world filled with lore, dungeons, languages, cultures and even plans for quests and a town building aspect. The world is roughly 84 GB and a total of 102,400 blocks across. Not only do we have realistic land formations that draw inspiration from the world we live in but we take into account wind patterns, tectonic plates, and positioning along latitude lines. These and many more aspects give us the credit to say we have the most detailed Minecraft map yet. Here are a few snippets of creating this world:

    The Entire Map:

    Creating the mountain ranges:

A Map of Wind Movements/Tectonic Plates

    Terrain Pictures:
    *more coming soon*

Not only do we have a world full of detail and immersion but we have a highly skilled team of builders that create towns and countries with large amounts of detail. We have cultures rich in history and recognizable architectural styles and themes. These towns are planned to have bustling and responsive NPCs, shops, and all buildings are enter-able.

An assortment of pictures from around the map:

    RECRUITING:
We are currently doing very selective recruiting right now since we do not have an efficient process for recruiting currently. That being said, message me if you want to join the server with screenshots of your work (if you want a better chance). But DO NOT expect a quick response. I'll probably get back to you relatively soon but like I said. We are very busy. Apologies, we will soon get a system going so recruiting will be easier. If you want to stand out please:

    • Put screenshots of your work in the message.
    • Tell us if you have any skills in urban planning, architecture, etc.
    • Be considerate and don't spam me with messages

Feel free to comment with suggestions or feedback and we hope to see you on the server once it goes public. We hope you enjoyed the pictures. Here is the link to a website with more information about the server not posted here: http://aerna.net/
