It's simple, it's balance because it requires silk touch and a mushroom biome, and it provides an alternative means of farming red mushrooms. You have my support.
This is the chart you want to look at when searching for a good mining layer. It shows the distribution of ore by height and as many have suggested, level 10 looks pretty good.
I've honestly never been asked that question before. We've always been a community about sharing ideas and resources when it came to builds. Nobody has had to set traps to protect their area before. Although if you mean to have traps and warn people ahead of time then it would be at their own risk. So, I would say if you post a sign somewhere then it would be fine.
I will say though, you'll never have an issue with somebody attacking you. PvP being on is mostly for people that want to build arenas, minigames or fool around. This isn't an anarchy server.
You are whitelisted. Welcome to the community!
Alright, thanks for answering my question. It will likely never come up, but I'd rather ask now and never need a trap then need a trap and get banned.
3) How did you find out about Jackals Den? I saw the server topic on the minecraft forums.
4) Have you read the rules and agree to follow them? I have read them and agree to them. They seem to allow us freedom to build how we desire without disturbing others. They also make us responsible for our own grief protection which is always quite nice.
5) Tell us a little about yourself: I am a student of physics and meteorology. During falls and springs my life consists of little more than homework and class, but during summers and breaks I tend to have more free time. This summer I am working on climate research, teaching myself piano, and editing/writing two books and a short story. For me, life often gets in the way of minecraft, but when I am online, count on me being a part of the community.
A quick question of my own: The rules state that PvP is on and must be respectful. Do brutal traps defending certain areas of our base count as disrespectful?
I'm currently having this type of issue myself. After using both triangulation and ender eyes, I can't seem to find my stronghold. I'm still in 1.7.2 though, so it might not be due to the same reasons.
Make yourself a checklist. Something like this might help:
1) Build hut and begin mining
2) Build permanent home
3) Build wheat farm
4) Find one youtube project you enjoy and build it
5) Automate that wheat farm
Try to think of things you either need or want to build and write them down. If youtube inspires you, be sure to include some of those builds and replicate them yourself.
Don't use torches or glowstone. Placing jack-o-lanterns in the floor is best, since mobs can spawn on them. Dan does provide the best way though, light up everything.

EDIT: Ah, I didn't see it's a server. Nevermind.
