posted a message on How to keep track of your house?
The coordinate system is nice and very useful, but not always helpful.

When I play SSP on my laptop, for some reason the animated graph at the bottom left (is that pingtime?) nearly instantly obliterates the coordinates and makes it difficult to use unless I close out, then reopen.

At home on my primary desktop, though, it's never a problem.

It is, however, safer to follow my paths of torches (etc) than to end up with tunnel vision on the coordinates and walk into a ravine or a creeper :wink.gif:

I use a combination of several things.

Torches along the primary travel axis NS/EW
-with towers of sandstone, lit with torches, every 1k
Jack-o-lanterns under water unless I feel like building a water-based dirt tower
When I have access to it, I build a lava tower not far from my house, with a water pit surrounding it for safety. Makes for nice light during nighttime, but also can be seen from quite far away.

posted a message on Major (100+chunk) holes in the map normal?
When connected to a buddy's server, which he hosted on his own PC, we noticed more chunk issues like these if more than 3 people were connected to it, or if he was doing additional things on the PC.

It rarely happens on an externally hosted server in our experience.

I must be doing something wrong, because if I place blocks directly above a chest similar to MissingUsername's picture, the chest won't open.

I died four or five times last night, but the most memorable was digging out a mineshaft pillar under me and falling into a pocket of lava.

    Quote from Ratnix

For the bonemeal method are you planting them outside and getting the giant mushrooms and chopping those down. You should get much more than just 24 out of 20 mushrooms. You should have multiple stacks.

    Yes, outside
Yes, chopping them down, using fists, sword, pick, and axe (yes, I tried each) but the end result was still only a 15-20% return.

posted a message on Mushroom spread too slow?
I had a semi-useful mushroom farm that I finished just two days before 1.8 dropped, and never really got a decent harvest from it.

Now it's not useful at all - 5 lanes of 5 levels of 5 mushrooms, and I get 2 mushrooms per 3-day harvest.

So I tried the bonemeal route - and out of 20 planted mushrooms, I ended up with 24 harvested mushrooms.

I don't see how it's much better of an option, especially with requiring additional components.

Unless I'm doing something wrong when harvesting.

posted a message on How Do You Tell When Wheat Is Ready For Harvesting?
    Quote from numbskull

For ultimate simplicity, just look at the tops; if the tops of the wheat are brown, they're ready for harvest. Every previous stage of development, the tops are green. (Note that this applies to the default texture pack and may not apply to other packs.)

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is thinking "ugh", as I am green-brown colorblind (among others).

    Le sigh.

posted a message on Should I build a house in a flat or mountain biome?
On the primary MP server I play on, I have an open-plain castle with rooms for each player.

On the secondary server, I am doing a mountain build.

    Both present their challenges :smile.gif:

I carry a stack of sand for my "explored" notifier.

    Yes, plain old sand.

Since most caves I explore are nowhere near the surface level, it's a rare block to find, unless you're under an ocean or desert.

It also makes a good, cheap water filler, though it doesn't work as well for lava anymore.

posted a message on how did you find minecraft?
Read about it back in late 09, early '10? I guess, then I saw a video of some guy building the NCC-1701-D, and was intrigued, but was hesitant to buy at that point.
Then the "website crash" came where you could log in for free, and I played for 3-4 minutes, but due to my colorblindness had a WHOLE lot of problems seeing.
Then a buddy opened an MP server in June '11 which I logged into for a few minutes, saw it was much better color-wise for me, and bought in 2 minutes after that.

posted a message on By the way, I will nerf the endermen block carrying. It was a horrible idea.
I've only run into one, on the SMP server I share with my buddy.

It made a very nice window in the wall of our castle.

And left me a nice little pearl.

I kind of liked them being around, but then, in over 20 game days I only ever killed the one and saw another in the distance.

posted a message on how to find mines/strongholds
So far as I have found, you'll be digging and find a cave, ravine, or hole that will have a bunch of partial wooden structures, typically an upside-down U, maybe minecart tracks and cobwebs.

I haven't found one yet that breaches the surface.

For those of you who are saying "why are you lying, saying you have played for a while but don't know how to mine stone"

Perhaps he's like me, and started on an established MP server where tools were provided, and he never had the "from scratch" experience?
