Heat comes from Fire and lava. The main purpose of heat is so that you cant make wooden paths over lava.

Gold is Fire, Sand is Air.
The area closest to the Fire is the hottest. And the area farthest is normal temp.
Anything in a heat zone greater than 3 and that is flamable has a possiblity of catching on fire.
The farther, the lesser the chance.

Gold is Lava. Sand is Air.
Lava produces more heat. The safest distance for a flameable material to be from lava is 8 blocks.
Heat spreads like light. It goes up, down, and all directions. Certain mobs dont like heat.
When ICE is implemented, if it is. then.

Iron is ice.
Ice will produce cold air.
Heat can travel through stone to some effect.

Sponge is Water, Gold is Lava.
If water is above or near a stone, metal block that is exposed to heat, the water will also heat up.

Sponge is Water, Iron is ice.
If there is an ice block near a water block, then the water will freeze.

Can't help but think about thermodynamics.
One should take into account of the ability for materials to conduct heat. Metals, for example, is a good conductor of heat, meaning heat can be distributed farther away through metal.

Iron is iron, Sand is Air, Gold is Lava
Metals like Iron shall move heat 2 times its normal speed.
Metal that is in a heat zone of over 7 shall hurt you alot.

Metal Rods : Metal rods are created with an Iron or gold Ignot placed as if you were making a Wood stick.

Metal Rod would be used for things like Mechanisms or Cage things. They can also be used to make Iron/Gold Bows, Iron and Gold Torches (Lantern for Iron)
A Gold torch would look like a Candle Stick.
Furnace Types: Iron Furnace : An Iron furnace would prove to be much more productive than a Stone Furnace. Iron Furnaces can be used to produce Special metals, like steel, or Bronze (Using Copper, see below)
Instead of having this...
= Item to Burn, [gold] = Flame, = coal

You would have this. is filler space.
[gold]
Iron furnaces would also smelt ores faster than a stone oven.
Gold Furnace : A Gold furnace would smelt ore at the same speed as a stone oven, but it would have a 80% Chance of producing 2 ignots from 1 ore.
Copper : Copper would be an metal with a strength between stone and Iron. Copper does not make good weapons, but it does make good machinery. Copper would be used for things like Plating [See Below], Pipes [See Below], solid copper blocks and other things I cant think of.
Pipes : Pipes can only be made out of copper since it doesn't rust as fast as Iron. Pipes can be used in Mechanisms involving the movement of water or usage of steam power. Pipes can be placed on Walls, ceilings and floors. They will automatically change their appearance when placed next to another. Pipes can go either up and down walls too. (I dont know how that would work. :c)
Plating : Plating is used to enhance things such as wood, stone, and other sorts of blocks. The plating can be made of Iron, Gold, or Copper. Plating will improve the blocks resistance to things like Arrows and explosions. If a
Iron being the strongest, Copper is second strongest and gold is the weakest. Each plate has its own health. When the health goes to zero, the plate will break.
Iron has the most health but suffers more damage to explosions. Copper has most explosion resistance and less health than Iron. Gold has the lowest health, but it has the ability to repair itself over time (When notch makes enchants)
Silver : Ore used for keeping mobs away. I dont know much else to say.
Get over it. This wont Ruin minecraft, it will make it cooler. You dont even have to use them. This is a great idea. The game doesnt have to be JUST ABOUT CUBES. You have to be a little more.. adventurous with shapes.
