Nov 5, 2011McKathlin posted a message on A New Way of Learning With MinecraftThe website is new, and doesn't have many examples yet for how to use Minecraft for teaching, but the desertification/tropification exercise sounds interesting, and the platform has potential. I can see Minecraft being used to teach math, build puzzles for problem solving, serve as an alternate artistic medium, or provide the setting for a role play to bring a history lesson to life. I'm sure there are a lot of other possibilities I haven't thought of yet. I definitely want to follow these guys and see what the MinecraftEdu developers and users come up with.Posted in: News

It's amazing how much you can do with just a few starting materials. For a bit I wondered, How'd you get all the wool? And all the flowers and colors? Then I realized, that's the monster harvester at work: the wool is actually spider silk, and the flowers, 100% bonemeal-grown.
Way to ace the challenge with style. -

Bugs I have found:
I can't eat...right click with food doesn't do anything.
Furnace locks up game with 'loading chunks' screen
Hold the right mouse button. Eating takes time now, and is animated...sorta. :smile.gif:
The eating-takes-time thing is no doubt to keep people from rapid-fire eating their stacked food. - To post a comment, please login.

I agree. I'm not even a big redstone and explosions enthusiast, and I found this awe-inspiring. Excellent choice of video to spotlight.

And log rafts!
And primitive log ships, and log-tile wall art, and ceiling beams that are turned the right way, and whatever other rustic loggy things strike our fancy!

If there's one thing I'd request an alternate for, it would be chests. The current FeatherSong chest texture is busy and high-contrast, and in my opinion its coloration looks out of place with the rest of the pack. I'd like something smoother and simpler, something that would look good where there are many chests together, such as in a large storage room.
I'm looking forward to the new 1.3 textures, and hoping to see more complete coverage of item textures in the future. Thank you for making and sharing this pack!

That's too bad. I was curious as to how you'd decorated the inside. Anyway, it's a cute house!

I'm finding that log cabins look better if you use a texture pack that shades logs to make them look rounded. The texture pack I used here is FeatherSong by steelfeathers.
Now let's see what you've built!

Your school has quite an unusual design. I wouldn't call it pretty, or practical, but it sure is interesting. I like the lockers.

The trades revolve around emeralds, which villagers use as currency. Typical things villagers buy include wheat, wool, and raw chicken. Villagers sell a variety of things. The ones in brown sell food, flint, arrows, and other common supplies. The priests, in purple, sell things that are otherwise hard to get in early game, such as glowstone, redstone, and even Bottles o' Enchanting. Or they may offer to enchant an item for you. A smith, in black, sells tools and armor. Learn more here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Trading

The Xbox edition of Minecraft isn't bad; it resembles Beta 1.6.6 on the PC version, which is not far shy of the Beta 1.7.3 I first fell in love with. The sad part was that the video didn't show Minecraft's good side. It probably didn't give viewers the right exposure to get from "What is this dumb blocky mess?" to "Whoa! I can build whatever I want! This is the best game ever!" But the video was funny, probably extra funny to Minecraft's detractors.
By the way, if I ever end up joining some friends in the Xbox edition, I want to wear a kilt. Kilts are awesome.

My favorite blocks from this pack are colored wool, glowstone, crafting tables, and flowers. My least favorite are the stone types: they're too light and high-contrast. And Netherrack is too bright of a red. The jarring appearance of the common blocks is the biggest problem with this pack, and the reason I don't enjoy it overall. I'd recommend using something lower contrast and more medium-tone for common blocks, and reserving bright colors and high contrast details for special things like light sources, blocks you can interact with (e.g. crafting tables, furnaces, ladders), and less common blocks (e.g. colored wool, precious metals).
