posted a message on Separate game mode ideas
I've been playing this game for a while now and have really come to enjoy many quirky aspects of it. I'm going to give some suggestions regarding removal of certain 'quirks'. I'd like to propose that if any of the following quirks are to be removed, that they are not removed, but made into a different, hyper-reality (or just simply, fun) mode while a more realistic mode can be made without them. The quirks I'm talking about are:

Firstly, boosters: I know that they are technically a bug, but they make the game incredibly fun. Instead of slowly chugging along in a minecart pushed by a powered minecart, you can zoom around the map and make insane rides. The boosters add a whole new element of thought to track building which makes it much more enjoyable. This is one of the things that drew me to Minecraft; seeing videos of crazy tracks that defied physics.

Secondly, waterfall physics: again, probably a bug, but the ability to sail up a waterfall in a boat is another wonderful quirk of this game. It allows creation of crazy multi-level docks and other interesting inventions.

Finally: floating blocks. I saw in the TODO list that floating blocks may be removed or may require obsidian to make them float. I don't think this would be a great idea to remove them entirely. Perhaps in a 'realistic' mode, requiring obsidian could be a good idea (you can say it has certain properties that allow it to float; say it is less dense than air, somehow, or something like that), but I'd still enjoy a mode where I can make floating houses easily. Unless you make it that blocks will only fall if they have no connection to the ground, in which case I'd be fine with that.

These three quirks are actually the main things that made me want to try the game; seeing youtube videos of strange contraptions that rely on backward physics is part of Minecrafts charm (to me at least). I'd probably enjoy a mode without these quirks anyway, but please never completely remove them from the game; just put them in a less-realistic mode. Minecraft has been such a huge success with these strange oddities that it would be illogical to fully remove them from the game; they are what make Minecraft Minecraft. There's surely no drawbacks to doing this and it would allow Minecraft to appeal to two different crowds; those who want a semi-realistic building/survival game and those who want only a quasi-realistic building/survival game :biggrin.gif:

posted a message on Fort Zero (Save Released)
Just downloaded this: it is amazing! I can't begin to imagine how much time and effort this took; I thought it was an arduous task just making a tiny glass house! Seriously, this is an inspiration to my Minecrafting.

Only one thing I've noticed that might be wrong; I don't think the mob spawning house works. I've waited around there for a while and I've never seen a mob in the drowning room, nor seen their drops. I even got the guts to go into one of the spawning room itself (with torches and a lot of food) and it was completely empty. None of the spawning rooms are spawning anything, at night or at day. I tried removing the redstone torches in case they were somehow giving off too much light, but it still doesn't spawn anything. Any idea why this might be? I was hoping to copy your design (maybe on a smaller scale though) for my own house. Also, assuming the mobs spawn, how do you get them to go into the flowing water? Or do they just naturally do it?

posted a message on Can't stay connected to my LAN server
I'm running a LAN server on one computer and trying to connect with another. My problem is that I can't stay on the server for more than 10 or 20 seconds before I get disconnected. The clientside error is "Connection lost" and "End of stream". The serverside error is always java.io.UTFDataFormatException: malformed input around byte X where the 'X' is a different number each time. I've also encountered this error serverside: "Internal exception: java.io.IOException: Bad packet id 206".

    The server specs are:
    Intel Core2 Duo E7300 2.67GHz
    3.5Gb of RAM
    GeForce 9800GT
    Windows XP SP3

I'm using the minecraft_server.jar because the .exe doesn't seem to like to load anything but the few blocks at the spawn point...
I've allocated 1024 Mb of RAM to the server using the minecraft.bat file and I've set the priority of the server in the task manager to 'high'. I've run SeaTools (the HDD checker for my HDD) and it's found no issues. I've got about 80Gb of 500Gb left on my HDD. I'm not running anything else. I've closed all antivirus programs and set my ZoneAlarm firewall to 'game mode'. I can't think of anything else to do.

Also, my client computer is an Intel Macbook (1 year old). It can run Minecraft and other, more resource-intensive games very easily, so there should be no issues there. I tried running Minecraft on both the Mac and Windows partition and had the same errors.

Does anyone know what is causing this or have any ideas that I could try?

    Thanks in advance

Edit: forgot to mention that I'm running the server in offline mode, just in case that helps.
