Ah yes I solved the problem... A baby wolf which grew up teleported to me just as I exited the portal. Afterwards I brought him to the base and killed most of them because one of them ate zombie flesh. I must have forgotten which one was corrupted. Must test if making a companion block from them counts as killing and makes the corruption spread.
But as you said, there was absolutely nothing to worry about.

Yeah, I just murder any wolves I find outside of my wolf pit, they're too risky.

On my last world I built an Ark just in case something happened to all my animals, because they're a hassle to re-find. There's nothing to worry about building it at sea now though... nothing at all...

Anyone figured out the animal corruption from the portals yet?
It keeps corrupting my animals even after I moved it about 150 blocks away and made a special building just for it, made floor soulsand... Basically I tried everything people mentioned. No luck.

Did you bring anything through a portal? I've never had possession as long as I've kept the animals always a decent distance from the spawner. Right now I have them like 40 blocks away. But as far as I can tell it's an infection, so if an animals wanders near a portal, and then gets near your animals (maybe it has to die?) it can spread to others. In my last world I had brought a chicken through, a portal and back so it was corrupted, then I removed the portal and also moved a distance away. I spawned a new chicken from throwing eggs and when the first chicken met it's end, the other one got corrupted as well.

So my tips are: get rid of your portal, kill **everything** than get new animals and build the portal maybe 40 blocks away, and make sure nothing but you can get anywhere close to it.

Thanks! I read a few of the HC Spawn forum threads (none of which were spoilery) and it helps quite a bit. I find the hardest thing about BTW in general is getting my mind around the philosophy of the game now. It would actually probably be easier to fit my playstyle into if I'd never played vanilla. Then I'd have just starting out viewing HS more as a forgiving version of permadeath than as an exercise in frustration.

On another note: what's a good way to signpost your way back to base with simple materials early in the game? I've been using a stack of dirt two blocks high, on an open flat area, with another block of dirt next to it in the direction of my base. It's quick to build, and I can do it standing on the ground. This works OK, but I sometimes miss such a small structure (particularly when covered with grass or snow) and have to rely on my memory of geography.

I go with gravel, since it doesn't grow grass and I have a lot of it by mining. Also later I can fill in the gaps between the gravel markers to make a road.

I feel like mapping and orienteering is another vital skill for BTW.

I remember FC saying this was one of his intentions, since it's basically pointless now. It's part of why he nerfed maps so much (I'm actually surprised they still exist at all).

Edit - aaaand nija'd by FC.

Will this mod ever get updated again? I really enjoyed it in the days of beta minecraft, just wanted to see if it had changed much...

This mod had updated an enormous amount since then as you can see here. The title even says it was updated just two weeks ago. Please try reading the thread you're posting in before posting in the future. If you're asking if it'll be updated to the newest version of minecraft, it won't, because there's no point, you can easily download 1.5.2 and mod that. Again, if you had read back a few pages you would have seen people asking that same question over and over and over again.

I was heading up a vertical tunnel at the time, so I tried to move fast to avoid an ambush, then I noticed the dungeon at the top

I think in most cases running through a cave system is more likely to kill you then save you from a newly activated spawner. It really isn't a problem that needs to be fixed since few people will be lucky enough to survive and experience it. I've never once encountered an empty spawner while playing BTW because of how risky it is to move quickly.

I played the mod a lot, I just haven't played the newest updates.

You can get saw dust by punching trees in the beginning or using an axe to cut the log despite using an actual "saw". Animals DO run, I never said they don't but I'm saying it could be more interesting if they ran away from you by default because I see a lot of footages where players just run up to them and punch them for easy kill despite the fact that other animals run away because they eventually stop running away after a cooldown.

Although, I didn't actually have any dangers in the water so I guess that was my bad on my part but everything else seems logical.

I have been following this mod for two years now but I just never bothered commenting until now and a few months ago.

There's no reason to have something be called "wood dust" when you punch or axe it bu then "saw dust" when you use a saw. Everyone understands what saw dust is, so it's a solution in search of a problem. It's pretty clear what's going on there.

Punching animals to death is a terrible strategy in BTW, and has been for several versions. Animals that run by default would also make it extremely annoying having a penned in farm of animals, since they'd run constantly.

Is it because of squid changes? I have yet to encounter one. What do they do?

You really need to play the mod more before commenting on it. You basically hopped in a test car, drove around the lot and said that the car doesn't handle well at 60 mph. I'm not going to ruin the mod for you. Just play it and experience it.

It really doesn't seem like you've spent a sufficient amount of time with BTW to be able to make suggestions. This is FAR more complex then most other mods, and if you don't even know about the risks of boating in the open ocean then you really don't understand enough to be offering any suggestions.

    Quote from TheGnome

    2. Possibility of making water more dangerous? As of now, a player can swim across a whole sea of water as long as they have food but that is seriously pretty ridiculous. This might also make boats more useful to craft~

Have you actually tried this? I can assure you it's one of the most dangerous activities in BTW.

    Quote from TheGnome

    3. Small change, when you chop down logs, you get 'saw dust' and I think its more reasonable to rename them something along 'wood dust'/'wood scrap' or something? It doesn't make much sense that when you first start and punch a tree, you get 'saw dust' even though you didn't actually "saw" anything.

Meh, everyone knows what saw dust is. It's a familiar concept and it doesn't really require any understanding from players.

    4. Just a question and I know many people have been asking but I'm curious myself and too lazy to find the answer myself, what is the actual reason why this mod hasn't updated to 1.5.2 and up? Is it because the mods later up have more mechanics this mod still need to adjust to? Or is it not updated because it is just simply set for 1.5.2?

The mod is set for 1.5.2. Upgrading would necessitate ripping out all the bad features mojang added in (like how the anvil was ripped out, and the hopper was ripped out, and the comparator) because they don't fit with BTW. So nothing to gain since downloading old versions is as easy as downloading the new version, and everything to lose by wasting precious limited development time.

    Quote from TheGnome

EDIT: For number 1, I noticed on a lot of gameplays that the animals are all killed on the first night because the mobs have hunted them but logically it doesn't make much sense that they have lived up until you spawned and as soon as you arrive on the world, they just die on the first night.

P.S - Sorry for bad english!

EDIT: For number 1, I noticed on a lot of gameplays that the animals are all killed on the first night because the mobs have hunted them but logically it doesn't make much sense that they have lived up until you spawned and as soon as you arrive on the world, they just die on the first night.

Makes sense to me, Steve is a cancer upon the world, he arrives and everything falls apart. Seems perfectly reasonable to me and not only fits with the general theme of BTW, but also with natural behavior in vMC (floating sand blocks wait until you touch them, chunks only spawn once you get close, mob spawns depend on you being near enough to them). This seems like the most sensible behavior to me.

FAR more importantly though, it doesn't really matter if it "makes sense", by having mobs kill animals, it creates a gameplay drive to protect them and force you to travel further for animals and create more interesting gameplay experiences. So not only is it reasonable, even if it wasn't reasonable it's absolutely better gameplay.

Any map which depends on passive mob spawns will mean you die, since they don't happen in loaded chunks in BTW. If you have one sapling you'll probably die before it grows.

    Thanks for the update,

I very much appreciate the axe hunger changes, and even more the added "feedback".

Oh by the way, has any ressource on the net been made that could act as an introduction to the whole BTW experience ?
I'm trying to get some friends playing and it could become handy.

It really depends on the depth you're looking for. BTW changes SO much, and for most of it's players it's hard to even remember all the details that have changed. In many ways the best way to go is to watch a let's play, although they're obviously a little time consuming and hardly cover the entire expanse of the mod. The wiki does though but it's not always organized in a progression. Even something detailing the tech tree might over look details (like the fact that fishing requires bait now).

I really think something that could cover BTW at various levels of detail would be fantastic, and with BTW wrapping up soon, now might be the best time for something like that to be created, as FC has had a tendency in the past to shift items around to expand the gameplay, making previous walkthroughs useless (for example, ones that utilize pistons before they required high end tech, or ones that ignored villager trading now that it's necessary.

it was at one point, but eventually he removed it due to all the mods out there that f****d with the balance of the tech tree

Removing support for modloader wasn't an effort to lessen compatability (same with removing support for forge). It was an effort to not be dependent upon, and limited by other tools/people. Loss of compatibility was just considered an acceptable (and in my opinion beneficial) side effect.

Does anyone know if crops planted in planters grows as fast as fertilized crops? In other words, is a planter always fertilized?

I'm not sure about fertilized on soil vs not fertilized in planters.... BUT (as far as the most recent comment I can remember from FC)

Any wheat (not hemp) planted in soil has weird quirks around how much wheat can be planted nearby to maximize growth rate. So in general wheat in soil will grow slower than wheat in planters.

Fertilized wheat in soil grows faster than regular wheat in soil.

Fertilized wheat in planters grows faster than regular wheat in planters.

Fertilized wheat in planters grows fastest, and it also doesn't require water, and it can be handled easily with pistons.

    Go Planters!

Flowerchild, I just wanted to let to know that it is possible to get endstone without beating the dragon.
By using an enderchest with beacon, you can transport endstone from the end to the overworld. To get back you simply have to suicide.

I think it's unlikely most people would be able to survive conquering the Wither without steel tools or armor, I don't know if I could at least.

This is a pretty sweet mod. Well done! Gave it a shot today and I like the unique experience.

That being said I hope you don't give in to the chorus of "forge!" posts everywhere. You obviously have a design vision here, and I really hope you don't dilute it in order to appease people who don't really want to experience your game as you've made it and just want to smash it together with mods which will ruin it. I'd suggest clicking the report button on posts only to pester about compatibility though, as those posts are against the forum rules.

The nether seems to be crawling with Ghasts. way more than I ever recall, which is actually kind of fun since it makes it rather hectic running around trying to find a fortress seeing how I cant kill every ghast out there.

When the nether first came out it was dangerous with alot more ghasts. Mojang changed some spawning rules though and how the ghasts work and it got much much easier. FC turned it back to what it was previously, with the intention that you probably should be doing more mining through walls than running around out in the open when you are first getting to the nether. To support that goal you can use soul sand to help you find a fortress in BTW. The fun part about this is that the nether is, like the overworld, and the end, a world that you enter completely helpless and overpowered and over a long enough time you can gain control over it, instead of vanilla where the nether isn't very dangerous at all, just like the over world, and caves, and the end.
