For one, my computer has an i7 920 quad and a 2gb 5870, and secondly I am going to make a new minecraft.jar *tear* goodbye my mods.
I've never had chunk errors. And my computer was barely made in the 21st century.
Try checking out problems with your mods, java, or graphic settings. Or maybe your fancy gimbobs and watchamacallits just aren't so good as you think.
Chicken and watermelon.
Chicken are the only directly player-spawnable mob in MC that drops food. I have a pit with like twenty in it. They're also easy to kill with fire, so I can place a single block of fire somewhere and half of them will die quickly, and then I have lots of feathers and cooked chicken.
I also have lots of watermelon because I prefer watermelon to wheat due to it being more space-efficient and each square of used land feeds me more than the average of a wheat farm. Watermelon is also way more awesome.
1. Always dig STRAIGHT down. This will get you where you want to go quickly.
2. Dig STRAIGHT up when you need to. Good to have a look what's above you.
3. Carry a bucket of lava to dry yourself off if you get wet in a water puddle.
They DO spawn in 1.8, just more commonly in Boreal and Taiga biomes.
I know this because I punched one ten seconds after making a new world and died within the next five seconds.
EDIT: Nice houses. While I don't make houses for my wolfies, I do end up putting them in my Mob gallery - not as exhibits, but as "guards"
In case that one glass-pane-caged creeper decides to detonate.
Maybe you left a door open, or a corner was just dark enough for it to spawn.
Or maybe it was just sneaky enough it got in while you were entering your house.
I think when you're above the height limit your GUI disappears, along with the image of the block you're holding.
My guess is the alpha map was too awesome for new Minecraft and it buggered off.
Editing your skin so that your "head hair" file looks like a vanilla Diamond ore block.
Then hiding somewhere near a lava pool with your body hidden and crouching so people can't see your name.
