Idk if it was in a recent update but this happened to me and my friend in 1.9 after on a server the guys pawned 2 drags, we killed 1 got the egg that 1 was mine, the other 1 fell in the portal, he was so mad until i jumped thru and to my suprise found the egg on the other side this was in 1.8.9 so not sure if this helps and the other way to get it is give it with a command btw.
