posted a message on [Linux/Mac/Windows] Simple Minecraft Mod Installer

I took the time to create a simple Minecraft Mod Installer in Java. I created the interface similar to a wizard/installer found on an operating system like Windows. This will make it easy enough for new users to use and will not require said new users to manually tamper with JSON files or open the jar themselves.

The tool first asks you to select a version profile (pulled from the minecraftfolder/versions directory) and if it's detected as a "stock" (default) version, say just 1.8.1, it will ask you to create a new version profile.

From there, you select the zip files of the mods you'd like to install and they're installed automagically, the JSON is edited for you, and that's it! You then select your version in the "Edit Profile" dialog and you're all set to go!

The tool is compatible with OS X, Linux, and Windows. For Windows users, you can download an exe. For OS X users, I've created a .app bundle and for Linux (specifically Ubuntu), I've created a simple installer that adds a .desktop menu entry to the system.

The project is also open source, you can check out the code here: https://github.com/Luigifan/MinecraftModInstaller

Downloads (requires AT LEAST Java 7)

Windows - Download the .exe

Mac - Download the .app

Ubuntu/similar distros - Download the .sh installer

Everyone else - Download the .jar

NOTE TO THOSE USING THE INSTALLER ON LINUX: In order to run this, you will need to open terminal and you will need to know where you saved the installer to. I'm not too worried about explaining this in depth as if you run Linux, chances are you know your way around paths and Terminal but just in case

1. cd into the directory you saved the .sh
2. execute by running the command: bash linux_installer.sh
Enjoy! I'm open to any and all feedback/suggestions so please, leave them below.

Updated the program. Rewrote it in Java so I could support all the platforms possible.

this is super stupid, why would you want to steal some1's skin?

And why not? Maybe you want to make your own skin based off someone else's or you want to screw with a friend.

First I have to say is: VB and C# use the same .net libraries and there are many code converters to convert vb.net code into c# code o.O, so when its too difficult in c# it´s also too difficult in vb.net

You misunderstood. I never said it WAS difficult i said it was BEING difficult. I've since solved the problem but decided Java was a better choice for this tool

Well how about some optimisation fixes then? Honestly I just want the performance back that I had back in 1.2ish. And honestly why does the server have to run if I'm not open to LAN?

posted a message on Getting Rid of the Multiplayer/Singleplayer Merge
I'm not sure how many times this has been suggested but I must say that this is something that I personally believe needs to go.
Now, I used to be able to run Minecraft pretty well. Best performance I got was the 1.2 updates and it ran great! Now, by no means do I have an amazingly fast system that blows everyone elses out of the water. But, I used to be able to play Minecraft well. But ever since the LAN update/Singleplayer & multiplayer merge update (1.3 I believe?) my performance has gone down hill. Loading times are alot longer since it's running a server and a single player game at the same time and the game stutters alot more and is much laggier. Now, I understand there is a mod out there to remove the split and restore full singleplayer, but that mod doesn't seem to be compatible with many other mods which is sad. Now, I'm the only computer ever on my network so the LAN function is somewhat useless to me unless I have a friend who happens to bring over his laptop. I read the rule about Minecraft not only being for me, but let's take a minute to think: how often do we host LAN games? Why not leave the exclusive single player mode in and when we want to do our LAN stuff, we click the button to enable it AND THEN the server runs? It would make performance much better. I have two different computers both of which used to run the game quite well. Specs below
Rig 1
Processor: Pentium 4, 3.2 ghz Dual core
RAM: 4 gigs, DDR3
HDD: 500 gb hard drive
Graphics: Intel G41 Express Chipset
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.1 Pro Preview (dual boot)

Rig 2
Processor: Pentium 4 2.8 ghz
RAM: 2.25 gigs, not sure if DDR2 or DDR3 or mixed
HDD: 70 gig hard drive
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7570
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro preview

Now like I said, these specs aren't the greatest but I used to get pretty decent peformance out of Minecraft. And yes, I've used Optifine and it doesn't help as much as it used to. And on rig one, I've tried it under 8.1 and 7 and there's no difference. I get bad performance and it's really stuttery (18 fps average, but it dips down to 9 alot which is kinda sad considering I can run Fallout 3 on all high pretty well).
So all I'm suggesting is that we find a way to split the server for the lot of us who have lower end PCs and just want to play single player without being bogged down by an unnecessary server running in the background! If you agree, please let me know. I will also be finding a way to pass this onto Jeb.
Thank you,

Mike

No problem! ^-^

This would annoy many people, Jeb or Notch should make the program for skins not online, but saved on the players computer

Well, the way I see it is. Take someone like iJevin's skin, edit it, and then use it for your own personal use! :P

BUMP: I did a little bit of Hackintoshing on my old Dell and got 10.5 Leopard to work :wink.gif:
That's not the point though! After installing Mono, I managed to get it to run just by typing in "mono 'Minecraft Skin Stealer.exe'" (without quotes)
So for now, Mac users have at least SOMETHING to play around with ;P

Pics so it did happen:

Thanks, that's good to know :happy.gif:

I noticed that it only takes forever on the first skin you enter. After that, it shouldn't take very long

Currently working with MonoDevelop in Ubuntu to get this to work; I may have to rewrite in C# ;P
I do not have a Mac to test this MonoDevelop stuff on so if someone volunteers to do this, they will get credit for days c:

Minecraft Skin Stealer

A simple, yet powerful tool I've (re)coded in Java to make it cross platform and much more efficient than the older VB.NET counterpart you guys saw before. Just put in the username (it is case sensitive) of the user who's skin you want to download and its displayed in a preview box where you can proceed to save it.
I took the time to make sure this application did a good job of looking as native as possible, thus it looks good under Linux, Windows, and (afaik, I don't own a mac to test sadly) Mac OS X (if someone could get me an OS X screenshot that'd be great).
Download the .JAR file from the bottom of the post and double click to run it.
See the GitHub release page for more information.
So why not give it a shot? It's free! Spoof your friends by stealing their skins :D

Downloads

Download 1.0.2.1 .jar:
Alternatively, download the NEW OS X app bundle: here!
Requires JRE, which I'm assuming you have installed. Compiled against Java 8, but tested (and works fine) back to Java 6.

Launch Instructions/Alternate Parameters

Windows:

Double click the .jar file

Linux and Probably Mac

Linux users may need to set the package as executable. Right click the .jar -> Properties -> Permissions -> Allow Executing File as Program

Alternatively, Mac and Linux users can run this program from Terminal with the following command:

$ java -jar "MinecraftSkinStealer.jar"

Or to run exclusively command line, use the parameter '-nogui'

$ java -jar "MinecraftSkinStealer.jar" -nogui

Support the Project!

Sure, this is a simple project, but why not show your support? Add the following achievement kindly created by kyle_mine to your signature

posted a message on Mouse "Capture" Problems in Minecraft on Ubuntu?
Basically, I'm gonna keep this short and sweet: I'm running Minecraft 1.1 on Ubuntu 11.04 under GNOME2 with an Intel Express Chipset G40 Graphics card under Sun Java 1.6_30. I have Optifine standard and I've enabled Smooth input and disabled it. Whenever I click, the mouse is released. It's annoying and when I rapidly click and move (like when fighting) my character will tend to keep moving. Is there any sort of fix for this? Maybe I'm just noob and haven't found it in the settings but I've tried this with vanilla too. It doesn't do this for me Windows either. Anyone who can fix this for me would be greatly appreciated =)

Thanks in advanced,
~Mike~

posted a message on [LINUX] How to Setup a Bukkit Server on Linux (Ubuntu) ---- 12/24/11 (Merry Christmas, Notch!)
This is my first tutorial here so bear with me.
This is assuming you are either using Hamachi or know how to port forward.
I think is in the wrong place, if it is, could someone please move it?
+

How to Easily Set Up a Bukkit Server on Linux (Ubuntu/Debian Based)

While this was meant for Ubuntu/Debian based distros, it should work just edit the commands slightly.
So, the things you'll need.

-Latest Bukkit Build
-Sun Java 6 (Recommended, should work with OpenJDK but it might not work as well)
-A knowledge of bash commands and directories (Terminal)

First off, if you don't have it already, install Sun Java 6 with these commands

Add the repository
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/java
sudo apt-get update

Next, install the JRE
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jre-plugin

And, while this is optional, if you plan on developing with Java, you might want to install this or save the code for later.
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk

Let's start by creating the directory that we will work from. Put this directory wherever you want but, I'll be placing this on the desktop.
Pic:

That's all you need for step one; a blank directory. Next, download the latest Bukkit Build and save it in the blank directory.

Note: You can name it whatever you want, but to make our lives easier, let's all save it as craftbukkit-SNAPSHOT.jar

Now you're probably wondering, how do we use this JAR? You can't just simply use it by double clicking it like with the regular minecraft_server.jar; you need some Terminal commands. Unfortunately, it couldn't be simple lol.
You can either keep running these directly through terminal, or you can save it as a bash file for later use.
What we want to do, is tell the Terminal to run in the directory of the Bukkit server. To do this, simply use cd and then drag in the directory.

Yes, it's as simple as that =)

Next, we actually want to run the server, correct? So, we need to input some commands. Here's the version you can paste directly into the terminal:
java -Xincgc -Xms15k -Xmx1G -jar '/home/mike/Desktop/Bukkit Server/bin/craftbukkit-SNAPSHOT.jar' #If you've named your JAR something else, replace the craftbukkit-SNAPSHOT.jar to whatever your's is like craftbukkit-1.0.1-R1.jar

Let's go in depth into the code.
java is obviously telling Terminal to run it through Java. I'm not quite sure what Xincgc means but -Xms is the base amount of memory it will use. Xmx is the largest it will use. Play around with these until you get a value you like. The -jar argument tells Java that it's a jar we're trying to run. After this, is the path in apostrophes. You have to do this if you have spaces in your directory. Replace my directory with your's that you're running it from.
Alternatively, if you want to save it as a script file, you can. Use this:
#!/bin/bash

java -Xincgc -Xms15k -Xmx1G -jar '/home/mike/Desktop/Bukkit Tutorial/craftbukkit-SNAPSHOT.jar'

Then, all you have to do is double click and then Run it In Terminal and boom, it still works =)

Now, we can test to make sure that this works. Paste the command into the Terminal and hit enter. Be sure to replace my directory with your's :tongue.gif:

As you can see, the server was successfully started =)
At this point, it's local only.

Now we can test this by starting up Minecraft and connecting with the IP localhost

And that's all there is to starting a local server =)

If you want to make this public, you'll need to make the server stop by typing in stop.
Navigate to the folder you ran it from. You should find a couple things in there: A folder for the world, a few txt files, and a server.properties. Open it up, you'll find this stuff by default:
#Minecraft server properties
#Sat Dec 24 17:52:23 EST 2011
online-mode=true
pvp=true
allow-flight=false
spawn-animals=true
server-ip=
server-port=25565
motd=A Minecraft Server

online-mode, if set to false, will allow anyone to join even if they don't have an account. Pvp is self explanitory along with flight and animals. Now, to make this server public, you'll need to get your IP address and paste it in there. In my case, my properties now looks like this:
#Minecraft server properties
#Sat Dec 24 17:52:23 EST 2011
online-mode=true
pvp=true
allow-flight=false
spawn-animals=true
server-ip=97.100.181.224
server-port=25565
motd=A Minecraft Server

Now, people can connect with your IP:port. Where IP is your IP and port is the port in the config file. So, in my case: 97.100.181.224:25565.

After putting your IP in, you can no loner connect with localhost. You'll either need to put in your IP or IP:port.

Finally, you can now work with plugins and stuff. If there isn't already a folder, create a folder called plugins in the same directory as the JAR. Download plugins from here and have fun. If you wish to insert plugins while the server is running, simply input reload into the Terminal or type /reload and the plugins should be successfully in.

And that's all there really is to it, I worked really hard on this tutorial and I hope that this helps you. I really reccommend running your server under GNOME/Ubuntu Classic unless you have a tricked out PC that can handle Unity like a text editor. And yes, this should work in Ubuntu 11.10.
If you like this, leave some feedback, +1 this, recommend. If there's something I can improve on, please leave a comment below. I'll add it and credit you as needed =)
And yes, this is Ubuntu 11.04. I just have a really convincing Mac theme =P
