You can but it's a pain. Unless things have changed the portal frame blocks actually have metadata that says where in the portal frame they should be. In my test world I just spawned the actual black portal block and placed one to make a portal.

posted a message on When mojang will allowe changing username
I hope they do it soon because when I registered there was nothing saying your (then) minecraft.net login would be your in game name so I used my name. If I wouldn't lose my minecon cape I'd just register a new account.

    Quote from aurora1979
If they do mcbans and things will become obsolete for one. and most server owners would probably be a lot stricter on applicants incase they accept some who was previously banned.

That is easily fixed by assigning a unique ID that's tied to the account that never changes. The ID gets banned not the username.

Only people with the mod can see it. The only capes that everyone can see are the ones given by mojang to minecone attendees or other special occasions.

posted a message on Am I the only one that doesn't get all of the hype for minecon?
I had fun at the 2011 "Linecon" in Vegas but I wouldn't spend thousands to go to one overseas. That said if it's back in the US I'd go again. I think a lot of the "hype" is from a bunch kids who think it's some magic place when it's really not. I hope mojang learned from Minecon 2011 and applied them to Paris last week.

Personally I find doing it those ways to be a lot less fun, I'd have a challenge.

You're right and I have fought them in a similar way, albeit with armor, to what you described. It was fun to take them on but I need at least 10 beacons for my project and the novelty of having a royal rumble wears off quick after the first couple.

Hmm. I just hope that if they bring it back to the US they don't hold it the week before or after Thanksgiving as that would screw with a lot of holiday planning and make it difficult for people to get time off from work.

Not too bad at all. I'm partial to finding a specific bedrock formation and letting it suffocate itself while I enjoy a cold beverage.

posted a message on slime spawner
    Quote from Cerium

Slimes usually spawn in flat areas, like plains, that's why if you have a Superflat world there are Slimes everywhere. You should try putting torches around and digging at least five blocks in random areas on the floor. Hope this helped.
    -Cerium

That's not even close to being right.

Slimes spawn below level 40 in certain chunks based on the world's seed and the slime spawning algorithm. The reason you see slimes all over on the default super flat world is because the surface of the world is at like y:3 and if you're in or near a slime chunk there is no natural terrain to stop or slow them from spawning. As of 1.4 they can also spawn in swamp biomes just like any hostile mob where light levels are 7 or less (including the surface at night) between levels 51 and 69.

I would use the second link in the post above to make sure you're actually in a slime chunk (which it sounds like you are). If it is indeed a slime chunk you need to make sure the floor of your spawning area is at y:40 or below. Lighting up caves especially within 120-130 blocks of the area will help increase slime spawns since other hostile mobs won't be able to spawn. Put torches on the walls or jack-o-lanterns in the floor to stop other hostile mobs from spawning. Do not use glowstone in the floor as the game treats it the same way as glass and mobs won't spawn on it. With the exception of levels 51-69 in a swamp biome slimes in a slime chunk will spawn at any light level below level 40. Try to avoid putting torches on the floor unless absolutely needed as that takes up an available spawning area.

Also make sure you're not within 24 blocks of the spawning area because mobs won't spawn within 24 blocks of a player. You will need to be 128 blocks for them to spawn (just like any other type of mob). Unlike other mobs that will randomly despawn if a player is not within 32 blocks slimes will not unless you go outside that 128 block limit. One last thing is you need to have a three block high room to achieve maximum spawn rates since the biggest slimes are 2.6 blocks tall.

The Moscone Convention Center could easily handle Minecon.

I've said many times it should rotate between the US and somewhere else. Plus I'd love to see it back in the US just to watch all the angst and gnashing of teeth it'd cause in the forums here.

Australia would be nice but the problem is is it's ungodly expensive for about 90% of the world to travel to (which I know the converse holds true for Australians) but mojang is going to put it where it's accessible to the most people which pretty much means North America (US/Canada) or one of the more populous counties in Europe.

    Quote from Eric29965

He does have a point. I live on the east coast of the US, which is two thousand miles away from minecon 2011. If four people were to go, it would cost well over 4,000 dollars for everything. Also, what you said about being selfish... I'm guessing you live in Asia or Australia and want it near you :)

    Quote from ILoveMcctfcom

Ha, and I'm guessing you went to Minecon 2011?

I live on the east coast of the U.S, and it'll cost well over 5,000 dollars to get there with a family of four. They need to hold it in New York.

I'm curious how you came to those numbers. I live in the midwest and flying out of my podunk hometown airport with its whole two commercial flights a day (where airfare at the minimum is usually $75-150 more expensive *each* way) I did the whole trip for~$800 including minecon ticket and meals. I did split the cost of the hotel with a friend which saved me $100.

    Quote from Luis

Was there even a Minecon 2010?

Not officially. There was an impromptu gathering in a park in Bellevue, Washington after a blog post by Notch where around 80 people IIRC gathered for the afternoon. The first official Minecon was at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas last year.

posted a message on Are macs good gaming laptops?
Any recent MBP will run Minecraft fine but if you're really into gaming Macs aren't the best. I love my iMac and MBP but it's the truth when it comes to gaming for the most part. You can install Windows on it and boot into it for gaming but that gets kinda old which is why I keep a Win 7 box around for games other than minecraft.

The whining is strong in this thread already. Life isn't always fair and you can't always get what you want. Capes are a exclusive bonus for those who attend minecon and likely always will be. Trust me they don't get you any special treatment.

posted a message on Is there a way to reset nether dimension?
Delete the DIM-1 folder inside your world folder. it will recreate the nether next time you enter it. You will, of course, lose anything you've currently built there by resetting it.
    Quote from Enotho

Deleting the DIM-1 (or DIM1?) folder in your world folder should do it.

    DIM-1 is the nether.
    DIM1 is the end.

    Stupid naming convention I know.
