Tried it three times, works for me. If I liked the snow more this would be really cool :Sheep:

I wonder now if there are more secret codes like this..?

Sea monster. It could be a kraken, a sea serpent, even a giant shark (or white whale :ohmy.gif:) . Basically I want to have to row out in a tiny boat and bring this sucker down. It would probably either be guarding an island high in rare resources or an underwater treasure.

posted a message on Nether Portals
What's happening is that the portal system creates a portal in the *nearest available space* on the other side. More often than not that space is some distance from the "ideal" location in the Nether. Going back through the less-than-ideal portal will create a new portal in the normal world that more closely connects to the Nether portal. The result is surplus portals and inefficient travel. The only way to fix it, from what I can tell, is to go back to the Nether and tunnel in the direction you WANT the portal to be. Some counting will be necessary, as well as figuring out the correct direction to dig. Bear in mind the 8:1 distance ratio.

Yes it's slow and annoying to trail-and-error with obsidian, but it worked for me.

Pretty sure I also remember him saying that he never actually tested them before throwing them in, and they aren't working how he would like them to right now. They'll change, just give it some time.

I'd love to see larger trees. Giant pines and firs are common enough that they deserve a mention.

posted a message on Notch: Eventually, you will freeze to death
First, there is an edit button. No need to double post.

Second, didn't Notch say at Minecraftcon that he didn't like the starvation mechanic? That he was going to keep food and health the way it is?

Eh, cheating is kind of the wrong word for it. The way I see it, I'm stocking up on an infinite light source so I get to keep them later. It's more like buying insurance, except we know that our house is going to burn down. So it's insurance fraud if anything.

Yeah, metal armor would be detrimental at best in the snow. Leather armor or perhaps wool would actually be useful. This would also give people a reason to carry around flint and steel.

The max distance should be.. let's say, a few Minecraft days long. That is, it would take 3 or 4 days to traverse the biome. Imagine a vast desert or tundra, or a sprawling lush rainforest. Of course, a lot of people have an issue with way big biomes. I think the solution is to have some kind of curve. Say 0% is 2 fog-lengths across, and 100% is 4 days across. The average size should be 30 or 40% of that. That way we still get the small biomes, and we can (very) occasionally get the massive biomes. Most of them, however, would be a nice size, maybe 3, 4 fog-lengths.

This seems like the best solution to me, and should be easy enough to tweak by adjusting the curve. I have no problem with large file sizes. My main save is 30mb, and it's going to get a lot bigger when I go exploring off my island to see the biomes.

I like your enthusiasm, but I think you get a little too excited with the punctuation. Your statement would be a little more valid, by the way, if you bothered to research and give examples of the big studios starting small. Not saying that Notch doesn't have a great foundation for a strong career in game development, but you sound pretty fanboyish.

Sounds like something for a Christmas Update.

"Merry Christmas! Oh, by the way, you're going to freeze to death."

Come on people, who doesn't see notch just do this? I can totally see him do this.

He DID make lava light stuff on fire without giving us any real prior notice... I can see this. After people already have houses built in the snow of course.

IIRC water and ice use a special shader that gives them transparency. I'm not aware of a way to replicate this for other blocks.

posted a message on So will obsidian be easier to mine?
Seriously, is there any proof that we'll need to go to hell to get the lantern mats? As far as I know, this is purely speculation based on the glowing blocks seen in the hell screenshot.

To the topic at hand: No, I don't think Notch will be shortening the time to acquire obsidian and I don't think he should. Once you get a diamond pick it'll take ten minutes to find and gather 14 obsidian, haul it to the surface, arrange it, and light it. Compared to how long it can take to gather and arrange redstone, this is nothing.
