    Quote from SomethingSlimy

What if gas instead acted like water, only upside down? It would flow upward, and you would loose air bubbles when in it. Perhaps source blocks of gas could be collected with empty water bottles? One problem with this system though, would be that gas source blocks would be infinite, so if gas reached the surface it would create an unappealing streak into the sky. Perhaps gas could have a finite system, instead of source blocks. There are mods that do with water, but I'm not sure if it would be a hassle on the performance.

I actually really like the sound of that. Perhaps instead of having the gas ascend infinitely, it would stop after reaching a certain height so that it would be limited in quantity and wouldn't create streaks in the sky. The idea of being able to collect the gas sounds interesting, but of course, it would need to have a purpose. Being able to make a hot air balloon with gas would be cool.

I actually think this is pretty good, but I would probably make the toughness of mining a bit less hard, like, at bedrock a diamond pick only mines as good as a stone pick. I do not support gas pockets, though, because they could become very annoying in certain situations.

I'll take that into consideration. I'll wait and see if more people agree, and if they do, I'll change it in the OP. Since you said that you wouldn't want gas pockets, I'll edit the poll to add an option about that.

posted a message on Stone Layers with Gas Pockets
I've been having some trouble trying to come up with a good way to present this idea, but I'll give it a shot anyways. The main reason why I think this would make a nice addition to Minecraft is because it would alter the feel of mining in favor of the survival aspect of the game, but it wouldn't be game breaking (although that's mostly up to you guys to decide).

    Stone Layers

What I'm thinking is that the hardness of stone could increase as you descend underground. Here's a picture to sort of demonstrate what I'm talking about.

The y levels I came up with are just approximate numbers. If a system like this were to get implemented, it wouldn't have to follow this exact structure. This is just a visual representation of how the system would work.

The different shades of stone would work the same way as grass does in different biomes, except in this case, the shade of the stone would depend on the y level that it generates in. The stone on ores would do the same thing. As you continue to mine downwards, the stone will take longer to mine (sort of like the fatigue effect, only specifically for just stone and ores). The hardness of stone will increase drastically between a transition to the next layer, but the stone throughout one layer will be consistent, only getting slightly more difficult to mine, until you hit another layer transition. By the time you got to bedrock, it would take a diamond pickaxe as long as a wood pickaxe would to mine stone at the surface (hopefully this wasn't too confusing).

With this kind of system, it would require more effort on the player's end to reach valuable ores such as diamonds. It would also encourage them to upgrade to a better pickaxe as they descend in order to mine more efficiently. The higher tier pickaxe you have, the more resistant it will be to the increasing hardness of the stone. Enchants would also be more sought after, specifically the efficiency enchantment. Golden pickaxes would really shine with this kind of system since they can mine stone faster than any other pickaxe.

    Gas Pockets

Another small thing that could go along with this system would be gas pockets. They would start appearing at the second layer of stone and would occur more often as you get closer to bedrock. If a miner encounters a gas pocket, particles will appear. If the player is really close to the gas pocket when it is exposed, say, 2-3 blocks, they will be poisoned for a short time. Once exposed, the gas pocket will begin to make a hissing sound as a warning to retreat. After a few seconds, the gas pocket will explode. This will add a little bit more danger to mining, especially deep mining.

So what do you guys think? Is there anything you think should be changed or added to make this kind of system better? Please share your thoughts.

posted a message on Mossy Cobblestone Stairs and Slabs
Not only do I want to see mossy cobblestone stairs and slabs, but I also want to see numerous other things, including:

    - smooth sandstone stairs and slabs
    - lapis stairs and slabs (you can do it with quartz, so why not lapis?)
    - birch, spruce, jungle, acacia and dark oak fence
    - stone brick, mossy stone brick and cracked stone brick wall (maybe even chiseled brick wall)
    - red brick wall
    - hardened clay stairs, slabs and wall (including all the colors)

It's a fairly simple thing that should have already been added by now. Support.

posted a message on Mojang Should Remove The Brightness Option! [Must Read!]
Pro Tip: You can actually change the brightness of your game without using the brightness slider in-game. There's a file called options.txt in Minecraft's root directory. Once you open it, you can set the gamma to a number higher than 1.0 (which is the maximum amount on the slider in-game). If you set it to something like 10.0, nighttime will be as bright as day. XD

OT: Like everybody has already pointed out, Mojang added the brightness slider in the options for a reason. Some people don't want the game to look incredibly dark, some do. Different people have different preferences and Mojang was aware of that.

I have just one small suggestion. Could you please make a border around the large map or have an option to toggle a border on and off? It's not necessary, but I think the large map would look nicer with a border around it, just like how the minimap has a border.

Good doing though. BTW. You forgot about SCP-36337-B, In every SCP there are two monsters. one is the building itself. another is the monster inside the building that you have to avoid.

Nope, just an article I did for fun. I'll change SCP-36337-1 and -2 to -A and -B. I also fixed some grammatical mistakes.

Ask a mod to put this in the fan-art section of the forums.
As for the guy above: The portal frame is SCP-36337, Endermen are SCP-36337-1, and the Enderdragon is SCP-36337-2. In short, they don't need to be letters.

And I think the OP forgot that Endermen are allergic to water, that would've been valuable information.

Ah, it could have been posted in the Literature section under to Fan Art category. I completely over looked that. :S

posted a message on SCP-36337 - A Minecraft SCP About The End
I made this because I was bored and I enjoy reading articles on the SCP Foundation wiki. The number 36337 is a number combination that can be used to spell the word "ENDER" on a telephone, in case you're wondering where the number came from. I posted this in the discussion category since I couldn't find a better place to put it (EDIT: Should have posted it in the Literature section under Fan Art). This is an SCP article about The End. Feel free to discuss, criticize, etc.

For those who are unaware of the SCP (Secure, Contain, Protect) Foundation, It's a wiki (click here) where people post articles about objects that the Foundation has to contain in order to protect humanity from their anomalous traits and behaviors. It's all creatively written stuff by the users and is in no way, real.

    SCP-36337

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

    Item #: SCP-36337

    Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Due to SCP-36337's immobile nature, Site-363 has been built around it; however, the entities within SCP-36337 cannot be directly contained by any known means. SCP-36337's initial chamber measures 14m x 9m x 6m and has been encased by 3m of reinforced stainless steel. The entrance to SCP-36337's containment chamber has been sealed off and any further experiments or investigations are not permitted without O5 approval. At least four armed guards equipped with a razor sharp blade are to be stationed outside the sealed entrance to the chamber at all times, going in eight hour shifts. Any sightings of SCP-36337-A instances outside the containment chamber are to be reported to the foundation immediately and be destroyed by any means necessary. Any unauthorized personnel or civilians who come within 50km of Site-363 are to be detained, questioned and administered class-C amnesiacs. Mobile Task Force Epsilon (aka Night Stalkers) are to patrol the 50km radius surrounding Site-363 every night to search for and destroy any SCP-36337-A instances that have breached containment, as these entities do not appear to leave SCP-36337 during the day.

Description: SCP-36337 appears to be a horizontal aperture that leads to a spatial anomaly. The aperture takes on the guise of empty space when directly viewed. The aperture is approximately 3m x 3m in size and is surrounded by a frame composed of an unknown beige, stone-like substance encrusted with dark green gems that form a symmetrical pattern. The material in which the frame is composed of has proven to be indestructible by any known method of destruction. The frame is divided into twelve (12) individual sections, each of which contain a glassy eye, similar in appearance to the eye of felis catus. Any attempt to remove the eyes from the frame have failed, although it has been hypothesized that the eyes are what keep the aperture powered. Possible removal of these eyes is to be considered a top priority following the events of Experiment Log 36337-04 and SCP-36337-A instances appearing outside SCP-36337.

SCP-36337 was accidentally stumbled upon by a team of six geologists that were exploring a previously undiscovered underground labyrinth about forty (40) miles south of ████, ███████ in the United States. Two of the explorers were later found dead in the labyrinth with their bodies' severely mangled while the other four have never been found, presumed to have entered the aperture of SCP-36337. Reports of civilians disappearing overnight in the towns of ████, ███████ and █████ , ████ were common shortly after the discovery of the labyrinth, some of which reported sightings of tall, dark humanoids with abnormally long limbs, or SCP-36337-A. Foundation personnel quickly established containment around SCP-36337 and class-C amnesiacs were administered to all nearby citizens.

When a human or animal enters the space-like aperture of SCP-36337, they are irretrievably gone. Investigations of SCP-36337 using D-class personnel have all ended in failure, as each test has resulted in the immediate death of the test subject or connection via camera and headset is shortly lost after arrival in the anomalous dimension. SCP-36337-A instances have been recorded on camera feeds from previous tests as well as [DATA EXPUNGED], declared SCP-36337-B.

SCP-36337-A instances match the exact physique stated in the local news reports from ████, ███████, but they also have been noted to possess inhuman strength and endurance as well as the ability to quickly teleport short distances excessively. These entities appear to be docile, so long as they are not provoked. If eye contact is made with any SCP-36337-A instance, they will immediately become hostile and proceed to [DATA EXPUNGED] the victim, usually resulting in death due to blood loss or physical trauma. Sidearms or any other projectile-based weapon have proven fruitless against SCP-36337-1 due to their teleport reflex. Attacking SCP-36337-A with a melee weapon is the only known way to physically harm them. Unlike SCP-36337-A, only one instance of SCP-36337-B has been recorded and has shown to have a highly aggressive nature. SCP-36337-B is able to detect any living presence within a seemingly limitless range, where it then immediately becomes active and continues to pursue the victim after entering SCP-36337. Once SCP-36337-2 reaches its target, it will then proceed to [DATA EXPUNGED], resulting in the disappearance of the victim entirely.

The dimension SCP-36337 leads to is incredibly dark and appears to be an immense island composed entirely of the same substance as the aperture frame. The island is suspended in an empty atmosphere by unknown means. Tall pillars of a violet colored solid are scattered throughout the island, each affixed with a floating cuboid crystal atop. The crystals are impossible to closely examine due to the difficult accessibility of them; however, bright rays of light that are expelled from them are clearly visible, all of which direct towards SCP-36337-B. The reason these lights follow SCP-36337-B and how they do so is unclear, as well as their cause.

Additional Notes: Multiple SCP-36337-A instances have been spotted outside SCP-36337's containment chamber, seemingly able to teleport outside the 3m steel casing, breaching containment. It is predicted that if the population of SCP-36337-A escapees becomes unmanageable, it could lead to a CK-class-end-of-the-world scenario. Requested upgrade to Keter approved by O5.

"If these things keep pouring out the of aperture at this rate, we could have a serious problem on our hands. Who knows how many of these things might be out there by now? Let's also not forget that we still don't know the full capabilities of SCP-36337-B and what it could do if it were to breach containment."

    Experiment Log 36337-01

    Date: ██-██-██

Procedure: D-36337-1 instructed to enter SCP-36337 with nothing.

Result: Test subject did not return.

Notes: "These results are inconclusive, we'll need to run some more tests, preferably with the use of a video camera." - Dr. █████
    _____________________________________________________________________________________

    Experiment Log 36337-02

    Date: ██-██-██

Procedure: D-36337-2 instructed to enter SCP-36337. D-36337-2 was given a communication device and a helmet with a video camera affixed to it. D-36337-2 requested to bring a weapon with him. Request approved and D-36337-2 was given a 9mm handgun and a 6 inch hunting knife.

Result: D-36337-2 complained of it being too dark, but described the environment as a large, floating barren island made of beige stone. Subject spotted an SCP-36337-A instance where it then opened its jaws and began emitting strange sounds as the video feed then went to static and communication was subsequently lost. D-36337-2 was seen shooting the handgun at SCP-36337-A, where it teleported directly next to him. D-36337-2 proceeded to stab SCP-36337-A with the knife, causing it bleed and stumble back before video feed was completely lost. Test subject did not return.

Notes: "SCP-36337 is some sort of portal that leads to a different dimension, but we'll need to gather some more data about those entities. I find it interesting how they're able to evade projectiles via teleportation." - Dr. █████

    Experiment Log 36337-03

    Date: ██-██-██

Procedure: D-36337-3 instructed to enter SCP-36337 and was given a communication device and a helmet with a video camera and light affixed to it. D-36337-3 was told to describe any details that were not mentioned from the previous tests.

Result: D-36337-3 mentions seeing tall, purple pillars with floating crystals emitting bright beams of light off the tops of them, which were facing towards each other in the distance. D-36337-3 turns around and finds a mangled body on the ground, confirmed to be D-36337-1. After vomiting D-36337-3 looks up, and directly faces an SCP-36337-A instance staring down at him. Video camera and communication device fall to the ground and screaming and footsteps can be heard before the same strange sounds are heard coming from SCP-36337-A. Camera feed and communication are lost. Subject did not return.

Notes: "It appears as though looking at SCP-36337-A is what triggers their hostility. It seems that instances of SCP-36337-A are the cause of death of the test subjects. Is there even a way back? We need to find out if there is." - Dr. █████
    _____________________________________________________________________________________

    Experiment Log 36337-04

    Date: ██-██-██

Procedure: D-36337-4 instructed to enter SCP-36337 and was given a communication device and a helmet with a video camera and light affixed to it. D-36337-4 was told to find a way out of SCP-36337, avoid any instances of SCP-36337-A at all costs and share any further details that were not previously described. D-36337-3 requested to bring a bottle of water with her. Request was approved.

Result: D-36337-4 spotted multiple instances of SCP-36337-A, but none bothered to approach her. Dr.███████ suggested that SCP-36337-A were afraid of D-36337-4's water bottle as it was the only variable in the test that differed from the previous tests. It is unclear whether SCP-36337-A were avoiding the bottle or the actual water itself. The lights from the crystals quickly approached D-36337-4, revealing [DATA EXPUNGED], which [DATA EXPUNGED].

Notes: Dr. █████ and all researchers involved with SCP-36337 experimentation were administered class-C amnesiacs after viewing the footage from Experiment 36637-04 and were subject to psychological evaluation. Any further experiments involving SCP-36337 require O5 approval due to the nature of SCP-36337-B.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________

    Experiment Log 36337-05

    Date: ██-██-██

Procedure: Dr.███████ requested approval from O5-██ to pump a large quantity of water into the aperture of SCP-36337, hoping to trigger some sort of reaction from SCP-36337-A instances, due to their possible hydrophobic behavior from Experiment 36337-04. Following the water importation, a robotic drone is to be sent into SCP-36337 to analyze any changes. Request was approved, but failure to conduct any positive results and failure to avoid SCP-36337-B will result in Dr.███████ being demoted and transferred to a different site.

Result: Water is successfully pumped into SCP-36337 without incident. Robotic drone is sent into SCP-36337. Instances of SCP-36337-A making contact with the water would emit a loud scream and quickly teleport to a dry surface. Dr. ███████ terminated connection from the drone before SCP-36337-B was able to appear, as instructed by O5-██.

Notes: "Water is the key to our problem! SCP-36337-A is in fact, possible to permanently destroy. Let's just hope we can still terminate SCP-36337-B using this same method. Perhaps a fire hose will do the trick?" - Dr.███████

    Quote from FailingAtFailing

I think for Iron the armour should be able to get Unbreaking without an enchanting book, instead of more Protection.

Actually, If gold armor and tools were the only ones that could have Unbreaking directly enchanted onto them, I feel as though people would be more tempted to use them since the condition quickly wears down. Gold should also be able to get up to Unbreaking IV or V.

    Quote from FailingAtFailing

Leather turning invisible also makes sense and should be in the game. Leather is organic, like Steve. Steve turns invisible along with his clothes (from his skin potentially) so why not leather?

That's actually a very good point, I agree.

I grant that there are numerous situations where this would be convenient. But I do not think we should have a system built into the game to protect us from our own mistakes, especially when there are solutions already available. It's not that I think this is a bad idea. I just think it's a little too much unnecessary hand-holding.

I do understand what you're getting at. Having a secure trading GUI is not needed at all, technically speaking, but I always thought it would be a nice feature to have if you want to trade with somebody that you don't know or can fully trust. I wouldn't be too bummed out if something like this never happens, but in my opinion, it would be a treat if something like this were to get added to Minecraft.

    Quote from MentalMouse42

First thought: You need to have each player's confirmation box get reset any time the other player removes something from their trading box., and perhaps also when they add to their own trading box.

If the other player removes their confirmation and changes their offer, you'd better be paying attention! XD I guess I could take the security thing a step further and make both confirmation boxes uncheck themselves if one player unchecks theirs. Thanks for patching a hole in the system.

    On a random note, I added a poll. :)

Speaking of CTF in Minecraft, I believe Mojang had already taken it into consideration (http://www.minecraft...apture_the_Flag) it's not exactly 100% confirmed in some sense, but it was still taken into consideration nonetheless. On another note, there's a map made by OfficialChunkyCraft that's based off of 2fort from Team Fortress 2. It has a working redstone system with a scoreboard and everything, so it's still possible to have CTF without the need of a new gamemode. You would just need to manage it with protection plugins or use adventure mode.

You've got a really neat idea here! People will probably say that this wouldn't fit into the theme of Minecraft very well, but it could still make an incredibly awesome mod! It sounds like something you would see on the SCP wiki. Not sure if you've ever heard about it before. I can't remember the exact SCP number, but there was a euclid one that would allow the person to walk through mirrors when held. It would then take them to some strange dimension with a really odd environment and entities, often very dangerous.

I'd rather that buff for trade be between player and Non-player shop (I.E, a server shop) because that's what's really in need of a better system.

I do agree that having a nice server shop system in vanilla SMP would be awesome, but I still like the idea of having a better player to player trade system as well. I'm sure that finding a good way to implement server shops into vanilla SMP would make a nice topic though.

    Quote from Neospector

Trade, even in real life, is just dropping money on the counter for a product on the counter, is it not?

True, but in real life, if you don't abide by the law, there will be serious consequences. When you're just playing a game like Minecraft, a simple steal will only get you a ban from that server at the very most.

posted a message on Safe Trading Between Players in SMP
    Introduction

Unfortunately, there's no safe way to trade with people in Minecraft. Sure, you can build those bulky, redstone trading machines, but they can be a problem when you want to trade in bulk and need to see the numbers or if you accidentally throw the wrong item in. This is where my idea comes in. (Sorry if a similar idea has already been mentioned)

Alright, I've scratched my old idea of the "Trading Button" in the menu thing and came up with something much more simplistic, part of which was MacUser's idea.

    Starting a Trade

    Here's an example:

To trade with Steve, Herobrine must be within punching distance of him, so about 2-3 blocks or so. He would then hold the 'T' key and then right click Steve to send him a trade request. An achievement styled notification will pop up on his screen saying "Trade request sent to Steve". Steve will get an achievement styled notification that says "Herobrine would like to trade". If Steve holds the 'T' key and right clicks Herobrine back, the trading GUI will open.

    The Trading Process

Here's what the trading GUI would look like.

    Top Left Grid: Your offer
Top Right Grid: The other player's offer (items in this grid cannot be taken, modified or moved)
Bottom Grid: your inventory and hotbar

Small Boxes: The confirmation boxes. click on the box under your grid to confirm your offer, highlighting the box green. The other box is to show that the other player has confirmed their offer. Once you confirm your trade, you cannot add, remove or alter items on your trading grid unless you click on your confirmation box again.

Arrows: These will begin to fill up (same speed as smelting in a furnace) once both players have confirmed their offer. If one of the players clicks on their confirmation box, the arrows will reset, both confirmation boxes will turn off and both players will have to confirm their offer again. This system should prevent any kind of scam.

After a successful transaction, a notification will pop up, saying that the trade was successful.

    Dealing with Certain Issues

Trade requests will naturally expire after one minute if they are ignored. If a player leaves the trading radius, the invite will automatically expire.

If a player closes the trading screen abruptly, a trade request will need to be sent again and all your items will be returned to your inventory.

If one of the players does not have enough room for the items they are receiving, once the trade "finishes", all the items you were offering go back into your inventory. A notification will say that the trade was unsuccessful.

If another player tries to send a trade invite to a player that is already trading, they will get a notification that says "<Insert Name> cannot trade right now".

If another player tries to send a trade invite to a player that has a pending trade invite, they will also get a notification that says "<Insert Name> cannot trade right now".

    Other Small Details

A small, blinking exclamation point icon will appear at the top right corner of your screen when you have been sent a pending trade invite. This icon will go away once the trade GUI is opened or once the invite expires.

The notifications will have a picture of the player's head that you send the invite to or received the invite from.

    Final Note

Please tell me what you think about this. This trade system has a very similar setup to Steam, like when you're trading items in Team Fortress 2.
