I guess I haven't put my full thoughts out so here goes.
1. We don't know enough about the experience system/leveling to make a good and informed decision about it. We don't know how we will get experience, and what the benefits are to getting levels, and we don't know if it will be what most of you are making it out to be so early on.
Say the benefits to getting levels are the ability to mine new blocks. I personally think this would destroy the "sandbox" style of this game. In order to build/craft something, you would have to be a certain level, which would severely limit creativity etc.
But what if the benefits to getting levels are things like doing more damage to mobs, taking less fall damage, breaking blocks faster, longer durability on tools, sprinting longer, not having to eat as much, etc? That wouldn't limit the sandbox style right? IMO It would make the game even funner!
Depending on how we get experience will be a major factor on how well this leveling thing will work. If it involves mining things, or building things, or pretty much anything you can do in Minecraft then it could work well. If it only involves one thing, like killing mobs, then it wont work, cause killing mobs just for exp is boring (grinding).
2. Permadeath. Alot of people had read this as (and are still reading it as (god help you)) permanent death. Which is when you die, you lose your world. The article in question DID NOT STATE ANYTHING about losing your world. It mentioned losing exp. So I am fine with this.
TL;DR: Read the post.

Jul 20, 2011Lapppy posted a message on Notch Reveals Leveling and Permadeathin fact, none of us should complain at all because this is still an early concept in development. IT can and will go through many changes and tweaks, so why complain about an unfinished product?Posted in: News

Yesterday, Notch posted an image of a massive mountain on his Twitter feed. But that’s not all. Look closely at said image. See the bar that looks a bit like an XP bar? It is an XP bar, but it also brings something extra – permadeath. In a forthcoming update to Minecraft, not only will you be able to gain levels. You’ll lose your levelling progress if you die.
You’ll lose your levelling progress if you die.
levelling progress if you die.
Read the BLOODY ARTICLE INSTEAD OF THE TITLE. You will not lose your map, like most of you think.
As for exp in general, If Notch wanted Minecraft to have exp and the like, then I dont care. It's Notch's game, and he can do what he likes with it. The game will always be amazing. -

We are getting content early. The game doesn't "officially come out" until November.

September 8 was only a GUESS. They never said it was for sure coming out this Thursday.
Now, it seems to me that a lot of people in here are dissapointed because they have to wait a little bit longer. More specifically, they have to suffer through one more week of... school. You will not die if you don't get 1.8 this week. You can, and WILL survive just ONE more week of school, and then you will get the 1.8 update.
Also: lol, release the updates early and don't look for bugs! that's our job as beta testers! lol!
next day: OMFG 1.8 IS SOOOOOOO BUGGGGY WHY U NO FIX BUGS????
The "beta" isn't ready yet. DEAL WITH IT

If you really want to, you can probably get a texture pack that doesn't have the snout. It should be possible since you can remove the nose/mouth part on the wolf through the skin png.

I very much agree with the part on the bug fixes...

Then I will wait a few hours and check the Wiki for a complete changelog, and proceed to go over said changelog and enjoy all the new features added to the Vanilla game.
Then I will update my server.

If I had to guess, I would say either September 1, or September 8.

The only issue I have with this interview is when the interview took place. If it took place yesterday, that's bad because PAX is less than a week away and they haven't got a good grip on NPCs yet, or the XP system. We could be sitting here for another month with no 1.8.
There was no mention of rivers in the interview so I think the interview took place more than a week ago. <--- Speculation.

It's so they can cover their ass. Thankfully they don't delete the posts, but instead lock the threads.

Nice post. Sadly most of the people who browse these forums will have no idea what you just said.
