    Hi, tried asking in the Feed The Beast thread already but not much luck. I'm playing the Insanity version of Feed the Beast using the modpack and the MultiMC install method. NEI appears to be installed and I'd like to be able to use it in recipe mode but I can't figure out how to get the display to show. Someone told me the O key toggles it on and off and that doesn't work for me. I know NEI is at least partially working because I poked at the config file and was able to turn the item ID display off, but I can't figure out anything in the config (which is all the settings I started with except the ID display) that's preventing me from using it.

    It shouldn't matter but I did update Forge from what's in the modpack (to fix an issue with Equivalent Exchange, which was also updated).

    Addendum to my ink question: I was reading the IC2 forums and saw that when crossbreeding plants, you have a chance of breeding various colors of flowers beyond the vanilla ones, and one of them is black. I've started using my ex-wheat farm plot to play with crossbreeding (while doing automated wheat and pumpkins with Forestry) so I might give that a go...I think crossbreeding wheat is what generates flowers.

    No such luck. Do I need to paste anything in for debugging purposes?

    I have an NEI.dat file in my saves folder but its empty...not sure if that's right.


    As for ink sacs, you have to use UU matter.


    Yeeeah...not worth it just for two ink for a non-required item. I'm sure I will get to making that at some point.

    Downloaded Insanity a couple days ago after having seen it on Youtube. I used the MultiMC install method, and while the game plays fine, I don't have access to NEI even though it appears to be installed. It's supposed to replace the default inventory screen, right? Or is there something you have to toggle? I've looked at the config file but nothing jumps out at me.

    Also, I've finished the beginning stages through The Bronze Age and while I spend a while on infrastructure and EMC generation, I'm really wishing I had clay so I could do more Redpower stuff. (It would also get me closer to a Mercurial Eye, which I'm coveting because I'm not looking forward to manually building the many, many more cobble platforms I need.) Is that a reward, or is there some sneaky way to obtain it?

    What about ink sacs? (The only reason I want that is because the buildcraft auto builder requires two). I guess I could make a large pool of water and hope squids spawn...

    Does the tainted chunk contain the poisonous taint-cloud-spewing, pulsing plant things? If so, then yes there is danger of the taint spreading through the air to infect other chunks and you may want to clear out until you have enough researched items to combat it. (If there's only one or a few you can try to cut them down and see if they stay unspawned.)

    Tainted creepers are also a potential vector for spreading it. If you stay, fence it off and light the hell out of it.

    Get stuff to research by attacking tainted trees and taintweed with axe and shears. There's also a tool in the Lost branch of research that is effective on tainted blocks of land and there's a small chance that breaking the blocks will drop tainted artifacts. Tainted creatures may also drop artifacts.

    Discovery: the Wand of Equal Trade is pretty handy for reconstructing silverwood trees. Plant and bonemeal a regular tree, replace the trunk with silverwood, attach one leaf block for the template and then hit it with the wand...quickly, before the regular leaves decay. Smooth over any decay holes manually as needed.

    Request: I'd like to be able to pick up a Flying Carpet with a Wand of Reversal. I didn't think it was possible to pick it up without draining it until I accidentally shot it with an arrow from 15 meters in the air while aiming at a skeleton on the ground. But until that happened, to recharge it I had to fly it around at low altitude to drain it the rest of the way, which was both annoying and boring.

    On the flip side, being able to pick up a flying carpet currently allows you to charge it with a Thaumic Repairer, which may or may not be intended (since the "proper" way to charge it is with extracts). I'd accept this being taken away as a trade off for being able to pick it up.

    That would require extra re-jiggering of how cauldrons work, I think, because currently you can only fill bottles, not buckets, from cauldrons, and there's no existing use for bottles of lava...

    Semi random item suggestion: A self-filling/ever-full cauldron, infused with some combo of a cauldron and aqueous crystals/extracts. I know infinite water supplies are trivial to make but they are sometimes impractical for space reasons, like my 2nd-floor workshop which holds both my brewing stand and thaumatorium.

    Another question...has anyone ever attempted to use an arcane bore on tainted land? I was thinking it might be a good way to stockpile tainted crystals...pick a wide focus and point it downward.

    I put Painterly on and its a real close match even without having Thaumcraft support, which speaks to how well the Thaumcraft graphics were done. I don't know about mod support though and they only officially support a small number of them. There's also a couple things it doesn't cover, like the smart zombies.

    Pure vis can be corrupted into taint. Its why overflowing a crucible or breaking even a "clean" tank puts Taint into the aura. Also, zombies and skeletons and such are corrupt to begin with, I would think, although their remains don't produce any more or less taint than uncorrupted things.

    Drawing on "evil" magic (which is what the soul/dark stuff is implied to be), I presume would also be a source of corruption in and of itself.

    Also remember the corollary to Clarke's Third Law: Any sufficiently advanced/analyzed magic is indistinguishable from technology/SCIENCE! (Larry Niven and the fictional Agatha Heterodyne, respectively).

    Magical technology is very much a "thing" and even the later Discworld books got more into that in later books, with the High Energy Magic building, splitting the Thaum, and Hex the magical computer.
