posted a message on Are you sick of mobs trampling farms?
I have so much farm space that it does not even matter. Also, I took a lesson from the aztecs. I build my farms in the middle of a lake so they do not get any sheep, except if they spawn there.

I always liked being an undead hunter, going deep into the earth with a sword, and about 3 stacks of torches and dirt.

I slay everything in a room, seal it off, and light it up. Which gives me, or others, safety to mine.

What? Give more details so I can add it to main post.

Notch said that there wouldn't be classes such as these. As for occupations, that's up to the player to decide.

These are not classes. They are things the player just decides they want to do. They are very general, as some people will do more than one thing. A player can change at any time just by doing something else.

First to clear up all misunderstandings, (1)this is Not classes. It is something which you can change at any time.
(2)Notch will not be adding this, it will arise naturally.(3)having an occupation does not means you can do anything more or less than others.

This is assuming an organised trade system is added, and there will be the option to have 10+ people in a game. Also, I think some of the shopkeepers and people with houses will band together in a small settlement.

So, I am thinking that most people are not going to want to do everything by themselves. So, some people will be doing certain things, and trade for items they want. So here are a few occupations.

Miner: Obvious. A miner starts mining, and sells the ore, or rock to the blacksmith, or shopkeeper.

Blacksmith: Right now on indev, anyone can do this. But, Notch is going to add more crafting tables and make it more difficult. So, a blacksmith has all the special crafting tables, and makes all kinds of tools. The blacksmith Either mines the ore himself, or trades tools for ore. Can sell to the General store, or run his own store.

Farmer: Farms require lots of space. It is not good to farm if you are a loner or anyone besides a farmer, because a murderous villain would just have to look for water to find you. So, the farmer has a large farm, which is protected by protectors. The farmer trades food for tools, and sells his food by himself, or to the shopkeeper.

Woodcutter: Cuts wood, trades for tools and trades excess to shopkeeper. Possibly has a tree farm when trees become scarce. If not, the woodcutter would have to be decent at fighting if they venture out of the settlement into the mob infested area.

Builder: Makes buildings. Most people will do this themselves, but some buildings take too much time. If building, the person that hired the builder must supply the material. If demolition, protection ditchs, or irrigation is needed, the builder takes the material gotten, uses it or sells it. Towns will hire a builder o make and maintain defenses, like walls, pits, moats, and battlements.

Mercenary: The small settlements will together hire a protector. The protector fights off bad guys looking to steal, zombies, and stops any fires. For payment, the blacksmith provides free weapons, the farmer gives food, and the woodcutter gives free wood. Also, the builder has to build a house from their own resources. Kind of has a nice cushy life when nothing is happening. A protector could also be hired for private use, such as following a miner and lighting the way.

Shopkeepers: There could be any number of shops, but I think that besides a blacksmith shop, only one would really do well. A general store! The shopkeeper buys materials, and sells them. Things like food, flint and steel, bows, and simple building materials.

Gatherer: This person goes out to the wild and collects things for anyone in the settlement. Things like flint and steel, saplings, or materials of building. Most commonly sells to the general store.

Loner/robber: does most things themselves, but come to the settlement for some supplies. As this kind of life can be hard, robbing would become an option to them. They would try to steal things from settlement, if the protector did not kill them first.

Town Ruler/Mayor: most likely the town starter. This person tells the ruler what to build, hires mercs, and does one other job on the side, most likely. Because ruling a town of 30 people does not take too much time.
Feel free to suggest more possible occupations. Think this will happen?

Edit: A question for all the readers: 1, would you do this, 2 would you be in the settlement, and 3, which you you choose to be. Please answer questions, to give me info.
