If I'm not mistaken, junkboy drew the original Steve. Dock only did Rana, smooth Steve, black Steve, beast boy and the bubbly minecraft logo.
Notch started Minecraft alone, and the original Steve skin was created by him shortly after he started development. Junkboy and others came in after Mojang was founded, which was a few months after Notch started working on Minecraft. That's what I've heard at least.
No matter how hard I try, I cannot see his smile as a beard.

Well, that's Junkboy's art style for you. I'm pretty sure he sees the beard as a smile and draws it how he sees it. I still think it was intended to be a beard though.
I think it's kinda funny how a few Minecraft youtubers (Sky and Ant included) started off making freakin' RuneScape videos and then jumped on the Minecraft bandwagon once it started becoming popular and RuneScape became even worse than it was before.
Adding onto what Johnbgood626 said, you might also want to consider making all the letters after the first letter of your sentence lowercase to make it a lot easier to read.
Whenever people are asked why they type like that, they usually respond with, "It Looks Pleasing On The Eyes." I honestly can not see how typing like that is eye-pleasing at all. It's eye-straining if anything.
Honestly, I can not interpret the thing on Steve's face to be a smile in the original Steve skin. It just wouldn't look natural, and a goatee makes more sense. Would you be smiling if you were left in the middle of nowhere with nothing but the clothes on your back and with danger lurking around every dark corner? I wouldn't think so.
