Draining nodes isn't combining.
You gain research points every new node you find don't you? These can be combined.
Quote from Vazkii
I understand that the player is not supposed to get all the aspects by combining, but I feel that that should at least be viable, and as is right now, it doesn't seem to be.

Hey Azanor, I started making a mod (just for personal use now, but I'll maybe release it someday), and I want to make an item, that would be holdable like map. I'm asking you, because of research notes in Thaumcraft. Could you please tell me how to do it, or at least post a link for some tutorial (if there is any. I haven't found one)?
Also, I have already googled, asked in Mod Development forum, asked few tutorial makers, but they didn't know how to do it.
(I'm sorry if this text doesn't make much sense, I had 4 exams today and I'm really tired)

the "anvil thing" is removed. the end stone requirement isn't an attempt to "nerf" anything. i didn't want to maintain all the complicated crap that was caused by having the soul forge, so i removed it. this was the way i avoid recipe conflicts or worldgen. Don't just make assumptions when you haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

What's actually the deal with the anvil thing?

I actually think that change was a pretty good one, soul shards were overpowered in the way that you made them, it was relatively easy. Once you have been to the end though it's fairly easy to make them again.

The part that hurts me the most is that fact that we can no longer use a shard on a spawner and get bonus souls from it. I really miss this feature......farming for the mobs is semi-boring and being able to "suck up" spawners as least helped you see the light at the end of the tunnel a bit more quickly.

with ars magica or mystcraft you can get around this issue..
