Do crops grow? The only other possible explanation for saplings only growing if bonemealed is that the gamerule randomTickSpeed was somehow set to 0, which will disable random ticks and crop/sapling growth; otherwise, if a sapling isn't going to grow by itself it also won't grow if bonemealed, with the exception of a insufficient light level.

as i have also said.... trees in my alternate farm just above the y=6 farm grows....

Birch trees won't grow if they have any blocks next to them, this includes half blocks like stone slabs. They also need at least 6 blocks above to grow.

So you will have to change your model to this: (D = dirt)

    L S S S S S L

    S S S S S S S

    S S D D D S S

    S S D B D S S

    S S D D D S S

    S S S S S S S

    L S S S S S L

this is completely wrong. wiki says they can grow in a hole 1 block high. and I tested my alternate tree farm but covering a particular tree with slabs all around and it still grew

    Quote from TheMasterCaver»

The light level is too low; I read "y=6" as saying that they are 6 blocks off the ground (as opposed to literally being at y=6), which means that the light level at ground level directly below them is 10 if there are 5 air blocks between the ground and lantern and the light level at the sapling is only 4 (the light level decreases by 5 below the lantern and 1 for each step by taxicab distance along a diagonal towards the sapling, or just 2 per block along a diagonal), which is too low (in older versions most plants, including saplings, would uproot in low light levels but for some reason this was removed in 1.7. Bonemeal bypasses the light level check so even back then you could bonemeal a sapling in the dark and it would grow):

    A 9 8 7 8 9 A

    9 8 7 6 7 8 9

    8 7 6 5 6 7 8

    7 6 5 4 5 6 7

    8 7 6 5 6 7 8

    9 8 7 6 7 8 9

    A 9 8 7 8 9 A

    (A = 10 in hex)

You'll need to move the lanterns down by 4 blocks, or no more than 1 block of air between them and the ground (i.e. at eye level), which will give a light level of 8 at the sapling (I presume that the half-slabs are to prevent mobs from spawning, which is a dead giveaway that it is too dark as they spawn at 7 or less).

the light at the sapling is 8 or 9. my farm is really at y=6. the lanterns are level with the saplings.

    Quote from Mr_N_Derman»

If bonemeal works, maybe its just the height limitation. The wiki says:

So maybe a tree will grow at six blocks, but its just very slow.

perhaps, but as i said, half of my farm has no height limit since I stopped building the roof halfway the moment I saw that it wasn't growing.

im starting to think that the saplings are bugged if one plants them too near to bedrock.....

My 2nd birch tree farm is laid out like this at y=6

    L S S S S S L

    S S S S S S S

    S S S S S S S

    S S S B S S S

    S S S S S S S

    S S S S S S S

    L S S S S S L

L = lantern, S = stone slab, B = birch sapling. The slabs are to prevent slimes from spawning. The lantern is placed on top of another slab at y=6. there is a 6 block gap ABOVE the sapling for half of the farm and infinite gap for the other half. I stopped building the roof after realizing that none of the saplings have grown. Any ideas why?

99% sure its a bug of some kind since my other birch tree farm directly above it is growing properly, although with jack o lanterns instead of lanterns but I doubt it actually affects anything.

EDIT: using bonemeal does cause them to grow however

    Thanks guys.

I used the NBT explorer and determined that my save was most likely created on the 1.12 version, which also seems likely since I remember avoiding 1.13 for a very long time lol XD

Im trying to find out what version of Minecraft (on Java) was my game first created in... I know a possible general date for the save game, but its useless since I rarely update my minecraft.

Does anyone know how to do this? :)

    Quote from Joey_San»

Just to say this... you really don't need that much effort to fix an iron golem farm that used to work in 1.12. Mainly, the changes that affect already-existing villagers are good because you can decide what villagers you want (and if you don't like their trades, you can reset them). To fix the iron farms, you do need to scare them and provide workstations as Hex stated, and there are videos for how to do this. However, amending an already-existing iron farm is much easier than making a new one with new villagers. Why go through moving the villagers again when you already have them?

Mainly, just move a zombie up to the farm as you see in the videos, then you need to separate the villagers and give them each a workstation and bed. The rest of the farm is fine (if you're using a traditional design, I am assuming), and it will actually work faster than before.

It's up to you what you want to do, but I say, embrace the change, because Minecraft is always evolving. Stuff will break but it's usually fixable with just a bit of effort.

i have not decided yet. my iron farm design is extremely old and not optimal

I hope you mean start a new world in 1.12, load a backup or go back to a world that was never run in 1.14 !

Taking a world back in time almost never works, the older version finds blocks it doesn't recognize, thinks the chunks are corrupted and regenerates them.

no its cause i already made a save backup just in case. so no issues here XD

Finally switched from 1.12 to 1.14 with optifine. villagers stopped working now - they just stand there in the open at night and get killed by mobs. What should i do?

and my iron golem farm stopped working as well lol.... idk whether i should actually switch back lol

posted a message on I need ideas for projects in survival mode that have a function. Not just something that looks nice, has to serve a purpose.

what about building mob/tree/crop farms etc?

very large scale ones who take days to build :P

or maybe just create a "wonder base" which is entirely self sufficient and automated and you wouldnt need to leave the base at all for whatever reason?

New to the game and I have tired to do some research but I can’t figure out the problem. I have built walls to keep stuff out. Made sure everything was lite up including roofs. I made iron golems. I had even started a survival in peaceful mode. It seems after a few days I have fewer and fewer villagers until none remain. Any advice?

    maybe pictures will help lol

If you want an accurate of the explored world (that part that have had the chunks created and saved to disk) then you should install Minutor.

Attached is a Minutor screen capture (I used Alt-PrtSc and Paint Shop Pro to make it a jpg file.) of a 1.12.2 world I just started.
The thing in the center is an Iron farm.

Minutor gives you a view from whatever Y level you choose from 255 to zero at a resolution high enough to identify each and every block.

Minutor can be downloaded from https://github.com/mrkite/minutor/releases

I suggest that you create a folder in .minecraft named Minutor and place the program in that.
That makes it much easier when you wish to navigate to a world folder for map display.

thanks alan you are a legend :D

how do i add markers on the map though? :P

Mineatlas is good, but doesn't show any of the new biomes after 1.12 (it won't differentiate between the ocean types or show new structures like pillager outposts).

Amidst is a freestanding application that will show the terrain and generated structures like villages, desert temples, witch huts, pillager outposts, ocean monuments, etc. It will also give you coordinates as well.

MCASelector is a java application that will show you the current state of the world, including all terraforming and structures that you have built. Be careful with it because it can also be used to delete chunks from your world.

thanks so all three of them allow me to place markers showing where villages are? and your mcaselector link doesnt work lol

To make my task easier, i wanna have an app that basically creates a minecraft map of my world and allows me to place markers at a very specific location wherever i wish to represent say, a village.

that way, i know exactly how my terraforming of my survival world should proceed on a grand scale for roleplay purposes.

is there such an app in the first place? :P
