If Notch adds sprinting, I want to see some parkour type moves, like wallrunning and such! Hard to program, and then again, I'd NEVER stop playing, even to sleep!

posted a message on Glorious Hills
I am a worker at the Tomato Estates, powered by the Tomato Mod. I am head of the farming in field 2, the biggest one of them all. I worked very hard this year, and my boss called me into his office. He told me that, as a reward for ten long years of service, he'd bought me a small plot of land in an area called the Glory Hills. I thanked him, this was a fantastic reward! I took a cruiser to the place, and found out it was quite beautiful--but untouched. So, I took the liberty of building a house and a little mine next to it. I also planted several saplings and got some seeds for farming. After three days, I decided to come back home, as work started the next day. However, I got home and saw a letter from the Cobble Real Estate Enterprises. The letter read:

    Dear KirbyMaster555,
It has recently come to our attention that you have been given a plot of land as a gift. However, it was about to be bought by a big construction company, Brick Inc., and they're very angry, and frankly, so are we. Let me be frank, Mr. Master, we're trying to sue you. You'd better have a great lawyer.
    Sincerely,T
    Steve Creeperton
CEO of Cobble Real Estate Enterprises

This was awful! I sent a letter to my brother, who was studying to become a judge in the Academy of Minecraftia, about what I should do. He responded,

    Kirby,
Looks like you have a problem on your hands! However, you could make it a completely public area, written under your name. You'd have to pay taxes, but they wouldn't be able to sue you without suing the government, and they'd lose that.
    Best of luck,
    MarioMaster555

So, here I am, telling you this story. Please, take good care of the Glorious Hills!

If you're scared of the monsters like I was at first, make a hillside cave as your home. One of the good things about a cave house is you get resources from expanding it, and you can walk two blocks to get to your main mine. There's nothing wrong with peaceful, but try to transition to easy, after you get a bed or on the third day. Remember, you don't need to leave your house at night: I usually mine at night (I make cave houses), so I'm all set. Or, sleep in your bed.

    Quote from Crunkatog

I'm paranoid and always build at least 1000 m from spawn (preferably about 1300 m or more) on SMP. My homes are absolutely invisible on Dynmap (built into a cave, under an overhang, planted around with trees). Even if you're physically in the area, you're likely to miss it unless it's night and you can see the faint glow of torches deep underneath.

Only after I get a sense of the community do I go ahead and build something closer to spawn or more visible and even then, I'm compelled to have underground exits, hidden staircases, escape routes, hidden storage, booby traps, and absolutely untouched and pristine surrounding landscape.

Not because I like nature...but because people are less likely to muck around with my settlement if all the creepers, zombies, spiders and whatnot are left to cavort around the place at will. No torchlit fields, no aboveground wheat farms, nothing.

Snow biomes are a special challenge for this type of settlement. If you settle in a snow biome and cut trees and screw around, the loss of snow cover is a dead giveaway. New conifers springing up without any snow cover on their leaf blocks is also a gimme. So I cut and plant by the cycle of the weather and am meticulous about going inside after sunset. One creeper blasting your snowy lawn into a dirt pit is all it takes to give away your location. I have a special chest in my base called "Biome Repair Kit" wherein sit a stack of snow blocks and some pine saplings. If creepers should happen, I fill in the crater and cover it over with snow blocks (which from afar look like just so much more snow). Then I plant a sapling over it to cover the depression until it snows again.

I never sleep. Snow cover is my friend. That said, I have a substantial tree farm, wheat farm, cactus farm, and reed pond inside. A fully functional mob fall trap (entirely contained underground, no tower) keeps me stocked with arrows and bonemeal. Even underground chambers have irregular borders and natural cavern-like shapes so people using X-ray viewers and cave viewers won't pick up on it right away. (OF course X-ray mod can't be helped. There's chests and stairs everywhere)

Natural lighting is provided by roof windows that surface underneath tree canopy, so they aren't visible from overhead maps. They are sunk 1 block into the ground, so they are not conspicuous from the next hill.

Cavern entrances for say 200 m around my base are left unlit and any coal/iron at the surface is left unmined. This is all to say "THIS AREA IS UNINHABITED, NOTHING TO SEE HERE, MOVING RIGHT ALONG". A recent server event drew unwelcome attention to a spot uncomfortably close (~300 m) to my main base. I made a point of making the area as uninteresting and bleak and dull as possible. Picked all the flowers, cut back the biome trees, filled in a natural lava pond, etc. To the casual visitor it's a barren icy wasteland. Creeps and skeletons keep the riff-raff out and lack of resources keeps the scavengers away by day.

Meanwhile I'm busy developing another site equidistant from spawn on the OTHER side of the map...just in case.

Like I said, I'm paranoid as hell.

Griefers can be mean, huh? If you're scared about thieves, ask your server hoster about the LWC mod--Light Weight Chest protection. You can lock iron and wooden doors (automatically the ones under them, too) and chests. Check it out!

Go on there. There's tons of irrelevant info, besides the recipes. Who cares how much damage a shovel gives? Hitting mobs with shovels is a dumb idea; shovels are a luxury, so why waste them?

I am a scribe. Since I was little, language has inspired me. I am disappointed I have to take a language next year, because I want to take more than just a language, I want to take multiple. I have a great eye for proofreading, and I find collaborating projects pretty easy. I'd like to gather the knowledge of all the researchers and make a "field book" for students. A teacher could explain better, but if the student needs info when the teacher isn't there, they can read the book. Also, researchers can read each other's findings, and possibly expand their knowledge or edit a "fact". I'm also interested in building simple traps and how tools are used.

    Quote from DeletedUnit

Shouldn't a normal bed just recover a little bit of health?

I'm not sure if you've been around long enough to hear about this, or if you've come up with a version of it in your head, but balancing items is important. If beds skip nights AND heal health, that's kinda overpowered.
What about if there are no pigs available? On the server I play on, there are builders that our council tells to build projects for pay and a slot in the server. If you get hurt, you have to go to a hospital, which is expensive as they just feed you loads of pork and bread, and pretty much tell you not to fall and suck it up. Plus, what if Notch adds in a mode with necessary food? Eating food to heal health AND to fill your tummy would be very costly. With a hospital bed, you get healthcare without wasting food.

posted a message on A Newbie's Guide to Tools
Tools. You can't live in Minecraft without them. There are several tools in Minecraft: pickaxes, shears, hoes, axes, shovels, flint and steel, fishing rods, and swords. Looking up Tools on the Minecraft Wiki also shows clocks, buckets, compasses and maps, but I don't count those as tools, just useful items. Kirby, why don't you count them as tools? Well, imaginary Minecrafter, these things can be used over and over and over again, or they don't have durability. Durability, for those of you who don't know, means how strong a tool is. I divide tools into two classes: essentials and luxuries.

Here is a list of essential tools, and why they aren't a luxury:
Pickaxe- You simply can't collect stone without this.
Hoe- You need this to make farmland for seeds.
Flint and steel- This is necessary to burn anything.
Fishing Rods- You can't catch fish without one of these bad boys.
Shears*- You can't collect leaves without them.

And here are some luxury tools:
Axes- You can destroy wooden blocks without this, it just takes longer.
Shovel- You can destroy dirt, sand, grave, etc. without this, it just takes longer.
Swords- You can kill mobs without this, it just takes more hits.
Shears*- You can collect wool without this, you just have to kill the sheep.

Mainly, luxury tools speed up the process of destroying blocks or killing mobs. In the case of shears, you get more product from one mob.
*Wait, shears is on both lists? Don't worry, you're not seeing double. Shears can collect leaves from trees as a placable block, and also collect wool from sheep, so in one way they are essential, in another they are a luxury.

    INCREASING DURABILITY
As of update 1.7, there's no way to repair a tool. So, you just have to make sure you make it last as long as possible. Use these tips to help you.
    1. Use a tool for what it was built for. Don't use a pickaxe for dirt, that's pointless!
    2. Don't destroy blocks with items that have special effects. Hoes, flint and steel, and fishing rods have special effects. Don't break blocks with them: it lowers their durability.
    3. Don't hit mobs with anything but a sword. Not only will swords kill the mobs faster, but every hit on a mob counts as two uses on an item's durability.

    posted a message on Canoes
Maybe you make canoes by placing boats in a row, like this:
    :wood: :wood: :wood:
Where :wood: is a boat. If you want a smaller canoe for two people, it's like this: :wood: :wood:, where :wood: is a boat. Another idea: by putting a chest over a boat, you could have a storage canoe. You could choose: three people, two people and a chest, or one person and a double chest. For the smaller canoe: two people, or one person and a chest.
