Hey, if the offer is still open, I'd love to join up! I've been looking for a place where a casual noob like me can work on building stuff with other folks.
I wish I'd read this first! "gargamel" spawns you in a dark cave all right... at the bottom of a MOUNTAIN. A mountain that majestically rises above the clouds. And yes, it is a lovely world.
I spent a half-hour... (insert the sounds of my sobs here) smashing my way up and out... with my bare hands! (insert the sound of my wailing here) And there was sunlight literally around the corner.
Half an hour smashing your way up and out? It took me 5 minutes and only 14 dirt blocks destroyed. I think I got a better spawn, I was near the mouth of a very large tunnel going into the ground, and I could see the light about 20 blocks above me and maybe 10 across when I spawned.
Anyway, coming out was breathtaking. Dont know what im gonna do, I don't need any more worlds (im the kinda guy who picks a world and sticks with it for months) but this may go on the backburner.
EDIT:
I came out at one end of the valley, walked all the way to the other, and found this amazing structure:
Looking back:
Went through the tunnel:
And then found paradise:
I bow before your mining skills! And - damn! - I'm glad I decided to explore. It's a beautiful world.
Just noticed it was posted on the last page. Oops. LOL
You need to dig around until you have enough dirt, then dig up 4, place 4 dirt below you, dig up 4 then 4 dirt below until you make it out. It's amazing once you get outside. The mountains go up to almost the top of the world all over.
Gargamel IS pretty sweet. I wasn't that far underground. I was in a corner and when I went around to the other side I could see light above me. I came out in what looks like a valley.

Jesus, you are all education vigilantes. I'm going to be off of school for over a month in two weeks, and I want to start playing minecraft. Will the game work in my situation?
I'm using a Macbook and Minecraft works just fine. I don't know the technical details for only playing in-browser, so I can't help you out there. I imagine you should be able to d/l your save file, but honestly I never thought of it before. Being a school-owned computer really only matters in terms of installing software I think.
Also, relax. Of course they're gonna bust yo balls. You needs an edumaca... edjucash... You needs learnin'. ;P
This is cool! At the beginning of Day One, I thought you were screwed, but you dealt with the spawn point like a champ. It's amazing how crazy those human mobs can be. Good luck!
That was a great read! Thanks for doing this, it's a hell of a lot of fun! It would have been nice to see some pictures of your works-in-progress; your nether castle, your home castle, etc.
I have an idea for this, I made some illustrations, on how it could be...
The stats list would be scrollable, and many more categories and statics for hundreds of stuff, if you've seen how the stats list for the GTA games is, that is what I'm thinking, have a look at the images I made :wink.gif:
Click for bigger pictures :wink.gif:
Hope Notch will implement something similar to this :biggrin.gif:
I'm glad you took the time to do this! This is exactly what I was thinking of.
Now, I don't need achievements or statistics to enjoy Minecraft, but something along these lines would be perfect. If for nothing else than to satisfy my desire for some kind of measurable objectives.
First Day:
1. Acquire wood.
2. Wood tools.
3. Build/Dig house (door, workbench).
4. Get cobblestone, sand, dirt.
5. Make furnace (& make charcoal if I haven't found coal yet)
6. Make & set torches
By the end Day One I have a safe place.
First Night:
1. Mine under house, as far down as I need to.
2. Acquire coal, iron.
3. Return to surface to check for daylight often.
By the end of Night One I usually have iron tools, armor & some swords.
Day Two (and beyond):
1. Kill Spiders & Creepers.
2. Rule the WORLD!
It's happened to me three times. It's probably the easiest way to find a dungeon, actually; just walk areound the desert until you find a suspiciously square hole.
Nice! Finally a good reason to wander around the desert.
On my first world (which I still play from time to time) I made my home right near my spawn point, atop a large hill/mountain. The first night I had no coal, so I dug right into the hill and waited until morning. Turns out I had made that first hovel right next to a thick vein of coal. I built into the hill/mountain and have been adding onto it ever since!
