first post, joined to suggest this, so don't hate
so if someones already said this I couldn't read all 9 pages :tongue.gif:
I think that is a cool idea, he said he might make other species as soon as the first 3 are finished.
On another note, am I really as annoying as I think I am?
So, I read through this thread and didn't really see anything on this, but I may have just completely missed it:
One thing I ind annoying with Mo' Creatures and the way minecraft is currently configured is that mobs despawn when you leave the area and then respawn where you are.
I feel you should make the dinosaurs like the squids are. You should know where the T-Rex's lives and not always have to worry about the new local one. Don't make the dinosaurs overly abundant and everywhere you turn is one. While I'm not saying to make them rare, I'm just asking that you don't see every type of dinosaur in any direction you turn.
With Mo' Creatures on the default spawn amounts all you have to do is walk 10 blocks and you've seen everything. You can't do anything without being swamped with creatures of every type.
To put it simply: Make the dinos abundant, but not retardedly populated.
Unfortunately, I imagine all of this would require a whole lot of work and changing of the core of MC, which isn't good for compatibility.
Soo... If you want to have the single greatest mod out there, you should make the mobs/dinosaurs a little more important to the game than then cows, pigs, etc. They should be mobs you can learn the behavior and territories of. (And then build secret bases to attack from >:biggrin.gif:)
Smarter dinosaurs (viloceraptors) would be awesome too, though making full-fledged AI's for them would definitely be asking a bit much.
On a random side note: I though dinosaurs would be pretty awesome in MC too and decided to figure out how and do it. Now that I see this I've just lost all motivation to learn and make it :L
Ooh well. Maybe you can make me angry and I'll make my own version :biggrin.gif:
Also, congrats on being the first mod I'm interested in enough to draw me out of lurking for two months and make an account.
Yeah, Raptors most likely wouldn't have AI, but Troodon would, it would be a nice addition.

Tyrannosaurus rex study reaffirms its predatory credentials
January 26, 2011
Ecologists say they have used a computer model to put to rest a nearly century-old debate. Did Tyrannosaurus Rex, one of the world's most well-known dinosaurs, hunt down its prey like a lion on the plains, or, instead, did it scavenge meals from other hunters like a vulture? According to scientists with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) the Tyrannosaurus had only one choice in order to survive: hunt.
Employing an ecological model based on predator relationships in the Serengeti—home to wide-variety of both hunters and scavengers—the scientists conclude that Tyrannosaurus must have been a hunter, because the king of dinosaurs would have failed as a scavenger.
"By understanding the ecological forces at work, we have been able to show that scavenging was not a viable option for T .rex as it was out-competed by smaller, more abundant predatory dinosaurs," explains lead author Dr Chris Carbone. "These smaller species would have discovered carcasses more quickly, making the most of 'first-come-first-served' opportunities."
The researchers also conclude that the Tyrannosaurus would have hunted over great distances like contemporary predators such as polar bears and lions.
Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B., the study says that previous arguments for or against the scavenger-theory have focused too much on the Tyrannosaurus's morphology. Many scavengers and hunters share similar morphology, yet use completely different methods of getting a meal. Still, many paleontologists have argued for a broader view of Tyrannosaurus as both a hunter and a scaveneger, something like the modern-day spotted hyena.
Ooh, a Spotted Hyenasaurus! Oh well, this destroys my theory.

This looks AWESOME (have I already said that before?)
So I saw you wanted to know how temperament/scale and stuff would work with some of the different dinos.
ONE: What most people call the velociraptor is actually a deinonychus. V-raptor is tiny and like a chicken.
With that over, here we go. Raptors should obviously be aggressive, a lot like the aggressiveness of the spiders currently. They should be as fast as the spiders, too (a bit faster, if you want to make it more realistic), and should be more rare if they'll be so overpowered. As for health, well... give them as many hearts as a zombie, I'd say. For noises, make them quiet, kinda like the creeper, but with an acutal idle noise. When they chase you, make them loud, and make it that their cries will attract other raptors; they're pack hunters, after all.
For the rexes, they, too should be aggressive, but make them aggressive towards the other dinos, too. Rexes were solitary creatures, so make them rare, but powerful; you take 3-4 hearts of damage from them. As for speed, make them about creeper speed (which I don't think is any different from zombie or skeleton, but whatever). They should have a ridiculous amount of health, too, like at least 1.5 what the spider has. Obviously, give them their iconic roar. :tongue.gif:
Longnecks should obviously be peaceful. They should move slowly, to fit with their massive size; if they move'd as fast as cows, it'd be ridiculous. As for behavior, give them the same behavior as cows; they were pretty similar. Scale-wise it looks like you have it pretty well right now, so I won't add anything there. With hearts, give them double what everything else has; like 20-30 hearts to fit with how large they are. Though make them drop a special meat or something, so it'll be rewarding to kill them, too.
Pterodactyls shouldn't be aggressive. They were, for the most part, fish-eaters, so they wouldn't attack humans unless their children were in danger. Some could get huge; others, tiny. I'd say make its wingspan like two spiders long, and make sure they roost high up. As for hearts... go with zombie health, I guess.
Trikes (triceratops), should be passive-aggressive, like the zombie-pigmen or the spiders in daylight. Though it would probably be more realistic to have little baby trikes and cause the others only to attack you if you harm the babies. They should move relatively fast, perhaps as fast as the spider, maybe a bit slower, and you should take 1.5 damage from their horns. As for health, give them spider health, perhaps a few more hearts since they're dinosaurs and they're supposed to be tougher.
Hopefully this proves helpful. When you make it compatible with Mo's Creatures, I will be one of the first to download this. :biggrin.gif:
This sounds pretty good to me, although I still, think the Tyrannosaurus should be a scavenger I am aware this is annoying by now, well, like everything I do it's most likely always annoying, but I feel pretty strongly about this, although it's okay if it's a hunter. Also, I think the health is a bit off (see what I think it should be below). approves of the above, of course or I have no say in this. one last thing, I think the Triceratops should be cow-speed when not chasing, then slightly slower than a spider when angered.
Velociraptor, 3.5 or 4 hearts.
Tyrannosaurus 35 hearts.
Triceratops 37.5 hearts.
Pterodactyl 0.5 or 1 heart(s).
If you post pictures of some of the dino's texture maps, maybe we, the fans, can help you skin these guys
I was going to suggest that.
EDIT: you should make a Desert place for the Velociraptor.
velociraptors live in the forest in tall grass
No, I don't mean to sound... aggressive, but I have proof:
Paleoecology
All of the fossil sites that have yielded Velociraptor remains preserve an arid environment with fields of sand dunes and only intermittent streams, although the younger Barun Goyot environment seems to have been slightly wetter than the older Djadochta.[19] The posture of some complete fossils, as well as the mode of preservation most show within structureless sandstone deposits, may show that a number of specimens were buried alive during sandstorm events common to the three environments.[2]
Hey it's me, the annoying newbie that you most likely want to jump into a Lava Spring.
approves.
I am not sure about the allegiances, it makes it seem to much like WoW, and I don't really like WoW.
I think in one player Skeletons and Zombies should be more common and stick together, if you have to make Spiders and Creepers rarer.
Here is an example of what I think the spawners should be like (Battle Pig):
(I see then food is kind of like an offering)
I summed up the ideas, how does this sound (not counting upgrades like War Pork ect.):
Battle Pig Common Warriors, does 2.5 damage, and
Sheep Worker Places wool blocks, and
Cow Medic Heals a chosen unit by 0.5 every second, and
Squizard (pun on Squid and Wizard) A squidman that summons Battle Pigs and Sheep Workers, ??? and
Ghast rider A sheep riding a Ghast, if the sheep gets KOed/Killed/whateveryouwanttocallit the Ghast becomes wild, ? ? and ? ?
Chicken Airforce A chicken that flies into the air when mobs gets close and then moves over them and drops eggs which damage 3, it's upgrade is the B-17 Chicken, ? ? and .
Spider Spy A spider that is invisible to the enemies. It runs over to the closest enemy, and when it gets 200 (this is just a guess, I don't really know what amount of blocks would be good)blocks or so away from the player it runs to warn the player. and ? ?.
I have more ideas, and I am sure other people have more ideas, but we don't want to kill this topic.
Also, if you have a hard time deciding what they should look like, I might be able to help with ideas, and possibly (possibly) make a skin.
Our dev team is trying to pump out as many dino's as possible in as short amount of time as possible. We are currently in a bit of a conundrum with textures, so small details aren't of much concern until we can figure something out. Our goal for 1.0.1 is to have a good amount of commonly known dinosaurs in a descent landscape. The second point is to have compatibility with other mods and to recover the nether. Details and perfection of the dinosaurs will come in later versions when the bulk of the work is finished and we can start to add item requests, and other minor aspects that were requested by everyone. HOWEVER, please keep posting your ides because THEY WILL BE CONSULTED when we are at that point in the mod.
Don't do anything that makes you nervous or unhappy, I know how you must feel, I mod a much simpler game and it's not easy. I just really like the obscure stuff, but start out with the common ones.
I am guessing Tyrannosaurus is going to be a predator, right? I guess that is what most people would like. Keep up the good work. (Spider approves)
Hello, I am new to this forum, I posted but I guess it didn't get through.
Let's make it quick, I don't have Minecraft yet, but I know a lot about it, I have been following this topic for about a week now. I will try not to annoy you, I know I must seem like an annoying newbie.
Also, I made some 2D models of my suggestions with Gimp, but they are so horrible I am not even going to post 'em.
Ornitholestes:
Desc: a small carnivore from the Jurassic period, it would work similarly like a Velociraptor.
If possible, it should pick up shiny objects the player drops and eat meat and eggs.
Appearance: large eyes, short snout, long legs and arms, more than half of it is tail. Possible colors could be a blue nasal horn and black with darker black spots.
Tolerance: aggressive (player and smaller dinos), neutral (player in easy)
Locomotion: running/jumping
Health: 5
Attack Strength: 0.5 (easy), 2 (normal), 5 (hard)
Speed: faster than a Spider
Spawn conditions: common in Rainforest and Redwood forest
Drops: Dinosaur Eggs, ?Feathers?

Saurophaganax is much like Allosaurus, but larger and more heavily built. It most likely hunted in small packs.
Only one has to be in the game, or of course, you could completely ignore this and my last post. Although it would add a lot more interest for me with these dinos.
Appearance: Allosaurus could be based off the Walking with Dinosaurs version, Saurophaganax could have bright colors, as it was a relative of birds (like all Carnivorous Dinosaurs)
Locomotion: running, possibly jumping at some times
Tolerance: aggressive towards pretty much everything, even Sauropods when under 40 hearts, neutral towards player in easy
Health: 35(Saurophaganax), 30(Allosaurus)
Attack strength: 3.5 (easy), 5 (normal), 6.5 (hard)
Speed: about as fast as a Zombie
Spawn conditions: uncommon in Jurassic open, extremely rare in Redwood forest
Drops: Serrated Tooth, ?Sauropod Meat?
What biomes do you have now?
Redwood Forest
Semi-Open Forest
???
You should add...
Ancient Swamp (grabbed the best pictures I could find...)
Coal is abundant here.
There would have to be lots of giant bugs here.
Adding a new fern-plant generation thing would be awesome.
Dense Forest
At least two new kinds of plants would have to be generated here, and would cover nearly every inch of free ground.
Permian Desert
A big desert with lots of rock formations, you could just slap in some giant lizard with a sail and have that be the main predator.
Mud Flat
Basically that x20, with the occasional rock or shrub.
Not sure about the Permian Desert, I think just a plain Prehistoric Desert would be good enough. Not sure about the Mud Flats, but I really like the Carboniferous Swamp, lot's of Prehistoric Amphibians.
Although, I think there should only be a 1% chance of finding coal in the Swamp, 2% chance in normal prehistoric places. Diamond is usually compressed Coal, so there should be a 0.5% chance of finding Diamond in a Carboniferous Swamp, and 1% in normal prehistoric places. But, because there are no humans, Gold, Iron and Redstone should be more common, or at least Iron and Gold.

Hey hey i know a LOT about dinosaurs!!
Let me give you some ideas:
Spinosaurus:
Carnivore
10 Blocks tall
5 Hearts damage in bite
6 Hearts damage in Claw Hit
As fast as a human
Hunts for all dinosaur mobs

Tyrannosaurus:
Carnivore
7 Hearts damage in bite
As fast as a human
Hunts for all dinosaur mobs

More ideas to come
Great ideas, although, I feel very strongly on T-rex being a scavenger, so I think it should only be aggressive towards the player and small carnivores.

I like this idea a lot. Here's my 2 cents:
Grass didn't exist in the Jurassic. Maybe you could replace "dirt" in the level gen with "mud" that doesn't grow grass? It would really just be a cosmetic thing, maybe a dusty orange-red color to give a stereotypically prehistoric feel to the ground. Instead, you could spawn clusters of ferns or shrubs similar to the way flowers are handled, to give a kind of sparse, prehistoric feel to the ground cover.
Otherwise, savannas were pretty extensive in the Jurassic, and that would give lots of space for giant dinosaurs to exist. Remember that most of the trees were conifers, as well. You might also try to find some way to make a tree fern or cycad (looks kind of like a palm tree). I like the idea of mixing in Carboniferous swamps and Permian deserts, even though they are anachronistic to the Jurassic. I would love to see a Glacier biome, but there's no reason to get carried away with Mammoths and Cavemen.
As far as creatures, I think having a T-Rex, a Sauropod, pterosaurs and triceratops would make 90% of people happy. I would also love to see Plesiosaurs and Mosasaurs, as well as a Hadrosaurs and Pachycephalosaurs. A pack predator like Velociraptor would also be fun (remember that real velociraptors are fairly small, about the size of a turkey, not the giant nightmare fuel that they were in Jurassic Park). You could also add a large beetle or a large dragonfly for atmosphere.
Under no circumstances should you make this creature a denizen of the Carboniferous Swamps, if you choose to add that biome (click image for wiki information!):
