posted a message on So, 14w33a changed the door models and sprites...
Wow, just wow. I sincerely hope this is a mistake. I thought when you wrote, "they look like they were [all] done in paint in 15 minutes" that this comment was an exaggeration but after looking at the pictures that appears to be an accurate statement. It's like they decided to replace the actual sprites with rough concepts. Who in their right mind would think those in 33a look better? Blind people? The difference in the detail is quite surprising. Plus there is the doors themselves being downgraded to 2D. Why? This is a 3D game, they have put work into making other objects look 3D (ex. glass panes given 2 pixel thickness). A set of 2D doors just doesn't fit, when people asked for consistency it was to give the old doors an upgrade not give the new doors a downgrade. There is still hope as 1.8 has not been released so I hope they decide to change this before then.

posted a message on Ability to craft Packed Ice in survival
    Quote from flaminghawk83

This is the most detailed and convincing post about crafting packed ice that I've seen. Yet, no support. At least no yet. For one, why haven't they made it craftable yet? There's a reason. I'm not claiming to know it, but there probably is. It just seems like something that shouldn't be craftable.

Now, if I was to support it, I would give some advice. If you change this, I may support. I think it should be 3x3. See, packed ice is rare. It is supposed to be. It should be cool to have. So, I think that you should at least make it hard to make.

    So, for now, no support.

I had thought about making it 3x3 when I first created the topic but I used the 2x2 recipe for several reasons:

-Consistency: 3x3 blocks are in all other cases reversible storage blocks for ores and now slime blocks. To keep it consistent this recipe would have to be reversible and for this case that would be weird. How would one unpack compressed ice?

Also other building block recipes go from 4 to one: sand to sandstone, nether quartz to quartz blocks, glow stone dust to glowstone, and so on. These recipes are not reversible or in the case of glow stone do not yield all the resources that went into them. I used these examples when imagining the recipe, it seemed like it belonged to this category, not the 3x3.

-Costs: The recipe is made expensive not by the number of ice blocks used but the fact that it and it's product require silk touch to move around. If it were 3x3 it would require 9 uses of the silk touch pick to produce one block. If this recipe is not reversible it becomes one of the most expensive building blocks in the game. (uses off your pick to make one building block? People would not bother to craft them for that cost unless they had no choice, instead finding the ice spikes biome and making this whole idea pointless. 4 blocks is consistent and expensive enough.

I think packed ice should remain limited and rare, they already made most other rare building blocks easily craftable.

    no support

To what end? This is just a simple building block and why should building blocks be rare? Mojang seems to have reevaluated this and decided that it is pointless to make building blocks that rare because then few people will use them in survival. Look at the chiseled stone blocks, chunk per chunk they were more rare than diamond ore. It is quite pointless for a building block to be that rare. By the time you collected enough to build anything decent with it you already have a well built base and a base theme chosen, so you would probably just keep it in a chest. It is the same for packed ice, why not make it craftable so people who want to build an arctic themed base can? Other wise they must wait till they find the right biome and a silk touch tool to begin harvesting and building. Rarity just because you can make it rare is not a reason to make something rare and it appears mojang realizes that now. This block is just decorative and in no way affects progression or gives advantages/disadvantages to players. It still requires silk touch, that makes it rare enough.

Full support. But an option to preserve it's rarity while still allowing you to preserve Ice Spikes, could be to perhaps make it so any ice that forms in an Ice Spikes biome becomes packed ice instead?

I like this idea but it raises the following issue:

Say you are playing on a realm server with a relatively small world border and the world settings are for large biomes. You stand a good chance of ending up in a world that does not have this biome in it at all since the world border limits the map size. Rarity shouldn't mean that it is impossible to obtain on small servers. Being able to craft it means you just need a cold biome and silk touch, plenty rare and it means this block will be obtainable on such small servers.

    Crafting Packed Ice

As stated in the title of this suggestion this topic is about making it possible to craft the packed Ice block in survival. My reasoning is as follows:

-Allows you to produce these blocks without damaging the biome. If you have settled in the Ice spikes biome it is for the look of the ice spikes, the last thing you want to do is tear down what attracted you there in the first place. Plus if you want to expand the structures in this biome/use them in your base design you either have to damage so of the spikes or find another of these biomes.

-Players in worlds generated before 1.7 need to travel great distances to find them, sometimes even in worlds above 1.7 as it can take a really long time to locate one.

-Consistency: Most building blocks can be crafted by one method or another: Clay blocks, sandstone variants, stone variants, the new ocean monument components, ect. Why should this be an exception? I don't see balance being horribly skewed if players can craft this building block.

    Crafting Recipe:

Ice blocks arranged by 2x2 in the inventory or crafting table yields 1 packed ice block.

In real life I know packed ice is formed by the accumulation of snow over time, thus adding on to glaciers. This is minecraft though and it would be inconsistent to make it out of snow which can be made without silk touch when packed and regular ice require silk touch to be harvested.

To summarize: This suggestion adds a crafting recipe that uses ice to make packed ice. Nothing more, no new items or blocks.

posted a message on Classier mushrooms suggestion, with pictures: Improving minecraft's mushroom variety.
Just thought of something, why not have glowing shelf fungi? They would be smaller than the ones you can use as platforms and be found on the sides of wooden blocks. I remember when 1.7 was in development, there was speculation about glowing mushrooms in roofed forest biomes but I was sadly disappointed when no such thing was added.

I really like this suggestion, I think both the glowstool and shelf fungi are my favorites. I think it would be interesting if you could combine glowstool with a water bottle and glowstone dust in a shapeless recipe to make glowstool essence. This is an item you use to craft a glowstool lamp which would basically be a fancier looking torch, having all the torch properties but as stated looks much better. Perhaps an iron ingot over the glowstool essence with another iron ingot underneath yields one glowstool lamp. It would be the colour of the original glowstool. It would be nice to have for one's base while cheap torches will be used to light up caves. Just a thought. Anyways Full support.

Edit: Is the reddit thread up for this suggestion yet?

posted a message on Do You Have a "Nether Hub" in Your World?
I have one, in the newest world I built (built on 1.7 release) I have it connecting my main base to a stronghold. It also goes to the nearest nether fortress. The inside has a floor made of half slabs and iron doors lead to the outer nether. This keeps annoying mobs out of the way.

posted a message on What do you guys think is the most useless item in survival?
Poisonous potatoes. Honestly, no crafting recipe or use of any kind and is a garbage food item. Can't be fed to mobs, used for potions, absolutely nil. Toss them into lava, cacti, or the void.

I thought that the bread would allow you to make sandwiches for some reason so I spent a good few minutes trying to figure out the crafting recipe before I went online and eventually realized none existed in vanilla minecraft. Oh the newbie days.

posted a message on Spike Blocks!
If there is a block above sugarcane it won't grow into it. This is not a new concept, they were talking about implementing a spike block that worked like a piston, with the spikes being retracted into a block and extended by a redstone signal. Honestly the spike block you are describing sounds a little over powered. If it breaks any blocks I would figure it would be those subjected to gravity like sand and gravel, the way torches can break them but I see no reason for them to do that either. If implemented they should only affect mobs, maybe kill them faster than being crushed by a piston. Such a design I could support, but yours is too powerful. If mojang figured the design they had was too overpowered I don't see this one being implemented.
