Ok, I've been working on this husbandry thing for quite a while and I've got some findings.

Animals do not, indeed breed, they don't respond to any food, block, or pen size.

However, as many have discovered, they don't de-spawn either. So saddled pigs and colored sheep are permanent.

Furthermore, chunks, once created, will not spawn new passive animals. However, animals from some distance away will wander longer than before, and maybe even wander hundreds of blocks. (I watched this, there movement is more linear than before.)

All this can be used in concert however, to easily capture and contain animals.

Through creative use of water, one way fence block barriers, and natural valleys, animals for thousands of square blocks can be collected and funneled into your pastureland. I built my channeling construction over the direction I've been mining in. So that As new chunks load, new animals load, and once loaded them stay there, and with water flows, fencing and such, they will "tend" to travel back to my setup pasture.

And of course, when breeding starts in the next few updates, all this will have been for nothing, lol.

    good idea

have they been breeding for those 6 sheep?

or did they spawn and walk in there

They are all walk up. I'm really don't think they are breeding yet, I've been watching them for a while.

If you haven't seen what I'm talking about yet, dig down to bedrock, and make a long straight tunnel. Between this, and the new mineshaft tunnels, minecraft has that "edge" for me again. And we don't even have the new sounds yet.

New wander up seen here. It's interesting, I don't think I'm getting new animal spawning. You can also see the sheared sheep.

Word to the wise, build a double door like the one I have here. Otherwise, animals will push their way past you when you go in, either getting them punched or escaping.

So I've been many hundreds of blocks away now, They aren't de-spawning. But I don't have any new sheep. Well, actually, I've got a new one outside my fence, but I don't think it's a a new spawn, just a wander up.

I can say with modest confidence gentlemen, starting getting comfortable coloring sheep for fun and profit, as they won't de-spawn. Next I will shear one and see if it will regrow wool.

Ok, I already have an update. I figured out how to improve my catch rate 3 fold. Light up the pen at night, and setup blocks around the outside. Animals from all around are attracted to the light, and once they jump up on the block and over the fence, they can't get back out. So this is my new test group. 5 sheep, 2 colored ones, and a chicken.

This took me forever to do, but I'll be conducting de-spawn distance and timing tests on this two frisky fellows. I'll let you guys know.

Seems effective. But really, until we get a block breaking monster in the over world, all perimeter defense is superfluous.

I don't really care for it much. Well, deep down, it's fine, but at night the desert next to my fortress is packed with monsters, dozens or them. I've been re-killed several times just running the hundred or so blocks from my spawn to my front door after being killed. Same with ghasts, I really can't enjoy or explore hell much because I'm constantly surrounded by at least 15 ghasts.

I'd rather not open a twitter account just for a thank you.

That being said, I'd like to express my gratitude for C418 for the haunting new musical score. If you asked me what mood a game like minecraft should have, I wouldn't be able to put in words, but this music, as a whole, is that mood. Excellent work.

I hate to be "that guy", but the biomes are the first thing you have to look at, it's impossible to do anything else before.

But ya, I'll go looking for a desert if I don't start in one.

posted a message on Biomes as a way to diversify underground?
I'm not so sure. Just from the stand point that biomes have little effect on the underground in reality. But beyond that, caves are really there own biome. How about instead, caves get split into biomes based on what they are exposed too? Lava, open to the surface, and water springs could be setup to have profound impact on the nature of the cave. Dark, isolated water spring caves? That spawns mossy stone, slimes, and mushrooms. Deep wide caves with large lava pools? That's spawns lava modifier monsters, richer ore nodes, and maybe even exerts heat damage. What about those caves with openings on the surface? That could have high monster spawning, less ores, and some kind of wind effect.
