Personally, for a japanese castle, Cobblestone, Birk wood and Redwood are great materials.
The roof might be a small problem as the roofs has a dark color to it.
Personally my problem lies within sculpting the buildings, as there arent much blocks that allows for the type of curves oriental roofs has. Not to mention the corner roof beams that are very distinguishable in oriental architecture.
Currently, im building my Japanese style castle in a snowy area ontop of a hill. Japanese castle designs are simple, well the fortification. and you build several "plataue" or platforms, with the castle beeing on the top, and courtyard beeing at the same level as the top of the wall. (Basicly its a giant walled hill)

As total war shogun has learned me alot in japanese fortification styles and how they work.
They never feared invation and they expected to fight the enemie head on, so their castles were designed with several courtyards to force the enemie to fight while their archers can constnatly retreat to a higher and higher level, while the Melee warriors and samurais would hold the enemies down at the lower courtyards.
But damn those little details on the roof are really tricky to get hold off, wich makes oriental building look oriental.
Won't there be a space between the fence pieces and stone pieces?

I did see on youtube one who seemed to have gotten som oriental style roofs really good, althou the building was quite huge (for beeing a individual wall tower), but none the less looked good. Might need to make some smaller buildings before i start on the castle building itself.
One thing I've noticed, is that its not that many "Far East" style buildings.
The type you usually find around South-east asia and East asia.
(Chinese/Korean/Japanese style, Khmer/Angkor Style, so forth)

Is the immense difficulty on creating the roof design, as we all or most of us know, those type of buildings have a very special distinct roof design, wich is hard to replicate in minecraft.

ATM working construction on my server with a medium-large scale Japanese Castle. (Been playing to much Shogun2, my fingers are itching to make one in Minecraft)
Tried to buy a server from the multiplay guys, but they wouldn't let me, due to me having to register a 3D validation account with my credit card. (I dont use paypal due to issues with them). wich means i have to go to the bank, wich i dont have much time for, and is difficult for me to do. (the bank is only open during a short time, and its only open when im at work, and when i have day off, the bank i closed aswell, so i have to take a day off from work, wich i cant afford and is difficult for me to do)
so i bought server from verygames, despite beeing french, i somehow manage but not very satisfied, now im just trying to get my map thats 17million blocks large to work, as atm its extremely laggy and wierd, but at least they accepted my credit card and had a proper and easy payment system. :/

Server will be private and mostly vanilla, and hardly no add-ons are required.

Other than that, i tend to delve into giant project building massive mansions, castles and undergrounds, even underground towns.
None the less, im just curius about your server, aswell as a working nether, is really intriguing me.

So far, all i've heard is that Dedicated servers are more stable and better performing.
Don't mind to have a VPN server as long as its stable and performs good.

Hello, I'm planning on starting up my server again, I used to have a popular creative server named gensokyo, this was run on my own computer, but I cant have my computer up 24/7, but I'd like to run a the server on a Dedicated server hosting site, so it can be up 24/7.
Main reason to start up my server again is to revive my gensokyo server aswell as starting a bran new server along with my friends, a server where its all about building and exploring (survival server), no silly mods or anything, just simplistic as possible.
Unlike other servers, this one will be free for others, perhaps a password aswell, no complicated thingies against griefers, just make a plain and simple starting area that needs to be opened up by a OP or admin to allow new players into the world, meaning, I approve peoples access or not.
This system works quite well and I get to know people aswell, althou some griefers tend to leak through at rare times, I'm very strict on controll and I dont hesitate to do server rollbacks and so forth. Saving lots of backups and also using map editor.
So far how i've ran the server is that I controll it along with some of my close friends, I run many backup files, and always do controll check everytime im about to log off from the server, making sure nothings been griefed.
Also controlling terrain via map editor so if accidental flooding occurs and so forth, They can ask and i'll fix it for them quick and easy.
Aswell as if people need big flat grounds to build something big, ill fix that aswell.
Keeping the server, small and simple.
Now for my main question:

I've gone basicly through them all, i spend around a whole day just searching through topics and so forth reading through.
most of the explanation just leads me around in circles. I'm new to hosting servers dedicated and actually have no idea how to do it.
So far the toturials ive read is just a bunch of Coding, or at least it looks like that for me.
And there is no threads that can tip me for a good Server hosting site in Europe.
What I would like to know is a simple explaination, or as simple as possible, in whats needs to be done to get a dedicated server, meaning, what programs do i require, wich hosting sites to you recommend, and how hosting sites work, and how i get my server onto the hosting sites, and personal recommendation for good reliable hosting sites.
Price i don't really care much about. All i'm interested is in something Simple and Effective.
Also I would like to know how the Controll panel works for a Dedicated minecraft server.
Would also like to know, without mods, are there any way i can grant people ability to recieve items from commands, so if people wants to build something grand scale, they dont need to painstakinly grind for the materials, neither rely on me or a OP to hand them materials.
I do run my own ventrilo server and so forth, but how i understand, it's nothing similar to it.

Hello, I'm running the server gensokyo. I would to have to server running at most of the time without me having to monitor it every single minute.
I've tried to do so, giving OP to people i know i can trust.
But even so, people are still trashing my server, greifing, ruining great spritework, buildings and causing flood and ruining everything there is to ruin.
Things that always gets ruined is my Underground city that people love to flood.
Another is the sprite they love tagging on or removing, and then put up some horrible sprite in their place. yes horrible and sick ones.
I even added complex spawn prison but they still manage to escape.
Do anyone here have any hints and tips to help me out? the people who enjoy the server really likes it, and i dont want to dissappoint them. aswell as i like it aswell.
But im tired of spending hours on OMEN trying to fix everything each time, or having to rollback to an earlier save everytime, making people loose their process.
Its starting really to tear me down and im considering on stopping hosting the server at all as people only seems they want to grief.
is there a way to put password on server? cause this would fix the problem instantly.

But my server will mainly be with me and my circle of friends, nomatter how gay it might sound like.
Perhaps some trustworthy guests now and then.
